OK I'm looking to buy a PS3 in the near future. There are several things I'm confused about. There seems to be two if not three PS3 models available at this time.

My priorities are that I want the unit to be able to play PS2 software and be a good BR movie player (1080P). Which model fits this profile better?

Also I have some issues in regards to HDMI connections...

If I understand this correctly the HDMI cable is supposed to do everything. It carries the video signal and also carries the audio signal.

This means that out of a BR players the HDMI output takes all the info by one cable and brings it to a preamp/HT decoder and then what?

Do the audio signals and video signal get split up and go where they are needed? Does the audio go through the decoder and then to the speakers and the video to the TV, PJ ect?

What if you want to send your video signal only out of your BR to your projector by-passing any preamp or HT decoder? Can this be done? Do I need another type of wire?

The reason I ask is I have audio equipment that will not do the new HD sound processing and doesn't have HDMI inputs so I want to send the video signal directly to the 1080P projector from the PS3.

80gb

And yes you can set up the system to output video through HDMI and audio through optical.

60 or 80gig

yep one hdmi cable to your receiver/amp/pre-pro that has hdmi then one hdmi cable out from the receiver/amp/pre-pro to the tv.

yep. thats the way it work.

yep. use hdmi from ps3 to tv and use optical or digital coax to receiver. you will set this up in the ps3. basically telling the ps3 what to do with your video and audio.

good luck. :)

Thanks for the info.

It's too bad Sony fvcked it up again. Now I have to use the less able optical output for the audio. Why didn't they leave an RCA coaxial digital out for music and/or movie sound track?

So HDMI out to the PJ and optical for the audio to my digital preamp... So be it.

Oh just bite the bullet and get a receiver with HDMI. The Onkyos are good quality and relatively cheap these days.
