I will be buying a PS3 this week. I currently have a XBOX 360 and a Toshiba A30 HD-DVD player...so the PS3 will give me the best of all worlds for both games and HDM.

Not entirely sure how I am going to hook everything up.

I have a H/K 247 receiver which has 2 HDMI inputs. Currently those are being used by the A30 and my Cable Box. My XBOX 360 is hooked up to my TV using VGA with optical going to the receiver.

I think what I want is:

Toshiba A30 and PS3 as the two HDMI inputs to the receiver which outputs to HDMI1 on my TV.

Then the cable box going straight to HDMI 2 on the TV with optical going to the receiver.

XBOX 360 remains hooked up like it currently is via VGA @ 1920x1080.

FYI my TV is a Vizio 47" LCD which is 1080p native.

I assume all I need to get in addition to the PS3 is a HDMI cable for it?

For the meantime the PS3 will only be used for BR movies... There are currently no games for it that interest me...at least ones that I do not already have or can get for the 360.

Anyone foresee any problems?

sound like youve got your setup pretty much figured out. just remember to run your PS3 audio using PCM.

will your h/k reciever accept component in and send it out via hdmi?
you might want to try hooking up your cable box via component to make switching between devics easier. unless you are calibrating each tv input seperately.

Yes it will take "analog" inputs (Comp, S-Video, etc) and send them out via HDMI....but only 480p or 720p depending on how the receiver is configured. And it does video processing (color, bright, etc) that cannot be bypassed. Only HDMI inputs that are 1080i or 1080p get passed thru without any processing.

its the one thing about my H/K that I dislike....what is really stupid is if you have it set to 720p...and you feed it a 720p input..it will still process/scale it.

For that reason the only video i feed thru my receiver are 1080i or 1080p HDMI...nothing else.

Ideally it would be nice to only use on input on the TV but its not that big a deal...And I have a Harmony universal remote which pretty much makes everything transparent to me/whomever is using my system.

sorry for the dumb question, but can this setting be used with optical cable? Or is this setting only to be used with HDMI cable?

Thanks

One note...you'll need to buy a dongle IR remote for the PS3 if you want to use your Harmony with it.

Yeah I read about that...but ill be getting my PS3 from Circuit City...which this week is including the PS3 remote with the 40gb PS3...not ideal since I would prefer only having one remote but not that big a deal.

Optical doesn't provide enough bandwidth for multi-channel PCM, so you can run PCM over optical, but you'll only get 2.0 sound, not 5.1, etc.
