We have been working on finishing up a new AVS HD 709 release. I got to thinking that we could probably easily just add extra images to the color sections so that the colors would be in order for CalMan users. Basically someone using software other than HCFR could simply begin on chapter 7 or 8 and then start taking color measurements.

From Bear5k's previous comments http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12377420#post12377420, I'm thinking 100% color would be: 100% gray (color 235 or white), red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow, 100% gray (color 235 or white). Is this correct?

Does the CalMan software also allow for 75% colors, and if so what would be the expected patterns? For anything in the grayscale, please give something like a numeric 16-235 color or a percentage value because I'm not sure how white would apply for 75% colors. Is the idea to begin and end with 75% gray, or is a 100% gray actually intended at either the start or end?

Yes we do allow for any color from 50% to 100%. Our order is 75% Gray Red Green Blue Cyan Magenta Yellow and 100% White. We use the 100% White at the end to properly calculate the DeltaE for colors because you need a reference and 75% Gray is not the reference. This is great news once you have it in I will add it to the list of supported DVD's.

Did you mean Red, Green, Blue rather than Red, Blue, Green as written?

75% patterns seem to be more the norm, and there are older technical reasons for doing this, so 75%WRGBCMY 100%W would be ideal. As I had offered previously, we are more than happy to host the set (even the HCFR version) if it also helps our users, as well.

Here is the disk layout currently planned http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12483970#post12483970 for the next release. The menu lists all of the titles in a column for a user to select. Many HD players seem to require going back to the menu to switch between titles, and in testing when I've hit the menu button it will return to the menu with the last title used highlighted. I have revised Title #3 and Title #5 to reflect the idea discussed here about using duplicate images. I think I could probably personally be able to deal with choosing a title from the menu and then hitting chapter skip 6 times to begin taking measurements without considering it too much of an inconvenience.

Looks good, and thanks! Also, my (Ursa's) guide that you list at the bottom of the post has been significant enhanced and updated as part of the CalMAN development effort. People can get the revised information in the extended help when they download our evaluation copy.

Quick question: Do you have the ability to have the various chapters automatically play one into the next within a title or do users have to chapter advance from one pattern to the next?

They will play sequentially within a given title, but each section is 2 minutes long to ensure that the pattern doesn't move on until the user is ready (and the meter has had ample time to read).

The titles are simply individual video encodes. Each chapter is around 2 minutes and there are chapters points set near the start of where that part of the video begins. 2 minutes was chosen simply because it was enough time to make a black reading with a Display LT and it seemed to be long enough to use most of the flashing patterns. The video will eventually move on to the next chapter, or you can chapter skip to the next. Generally when taking measurements the idea is that you'll be chapter skipping to the next chapter. To this point no one has expressed issue with the setup, like requesting more time between chapters.
