I just got my first PS3 today.:D Hooked it up to a wired connection from a Motorola Surfboard. I have Road Runner thru Time Warner. When I try setting up the network connection using Auto-Detect for the IP address, it fails each time.:( So instead, I manually typed in the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and primary and secondary DNS numbers. When I test the connection, it says that it succeeded in optaining the IP Address. But Internet Connection says "Failed". It also says, "An error occurred while resolving the name with the servor. (80710102)" I'm thinking that the problem may be that I'm not using a router. (I have one coming in the mail, but I got impatient:):o

Any help or advice would be apreciated!:)

Unplugg the modem for a minute or so then hook up the PS3 and turn it on. That may do the trick.

I suspect it's more of a problem with your router than the cable service. I'd offer more help, but I know nothing about the Motoroal Surfboard.

One thing that might work...

Modem to computer. START->RUN, then type 'cmd'
At prompt, type 'ipconfig /release'
Modem to PS3
Run PS3 test

Slim chance that could work. However, most cable companies will nail down your service to your mac address. If that's the case, there's not going to be a way to clone your PC mac to your PS3. When you get your router, you'll end up cloning your PC mac address into the router. So, cable co. sees it as hitting your regular machine. Router then assigns address to your machines and manages where data comes and goes. Just giving you a little insight into what's happening so you understand a bit better why you had to buy a router.

If you have an extra network card, you can put it into your PC and run your PS3 off internet connection sharing. I'd imagine it would probably be easier for you to just wait on the router and save yourself some headaches.

My R.R. hookup is trouble free. I am always checking out comps. for guys at work. They all work seamlessly when hooked up to the modem. So I would guess the problem lies with your router. Only other thing I can think of is if you hadn't rebooted your ps3 after the connection.

This is what I have to do right now with my Motorola Surfboard modem when switching from my computer to my PS3. I don't have a router either and I talked to a Road Runner Tech person and the modem stores the last used IP address and will only allow that one to go through. I have to unplug mine completely (including removing the battery backup) for at least 2 minutes and then plug everything back in and it works great. It is a bother but I haven't gotten a router yet.

That is crummy you should pick up a router as quickly as possible :). That is what I had to do with my modem aside from removing the back up battery, but once you get a router you shouldnt have any problems at all. TW changes the IP more often than my router and such go down.

RR sucks for straight connect to system gaming for me and I found getting a router relieved all my issues even from the PS2 days. Get a good router and call it a day.

Agreed. I didn't realize the Motorola Surfboard was a modem. Get a wired router and things will be easier. Plus, you can then hook a PC to the same modem.
