Anyone know if Direct Tv ever runs specials or discounts?

I've heard from several people who work at a DirecTV customer service center (there's on in my town) that if you insist on getting a better deal and/or threaten to drop your service (bring up the point that you've been a loyal member for several years), they're likely to offer you one - but it will come with another commitment. YMMV.

Is Verizon FIOS an option for you?

Well, if you have a Costco nearby you can get the HD DVR HR21-700 receiver for $169 bucks. Or check ebay and get one for cheaper. Might save you some cash.
