View Full Version : Spyder TV with PS3 help reduce BLACK CRUSH on FULL RGB?
genecrazy 02-04-08, 05:56 PM Okay, I did try to do my research, but i feel that I have too many questions to ask.
Before i even ask about my problem, i would like to let you guys know that i am unaware if this problem is my tv (westinghouse LVM42w2 ) or a cheap 50 dollar HDMI cable i bought that might not display all the colors.
Well anyways, as we all know, that when you put FULL RGB on blu-ray movies, there can be an issue with Black Crush. I tried to find solutions on how to fix or reduce black crush as much as i can. And i found out about the SpyderTV calibration tool.
Before I even spend 150-200 on a calibration tool, i would like as much info as i can get to know ill have my moneys worth. Will I be able to use it on a PS3? and if so, how can i work it? Would it fix black crush, and all the typical options of setting up color, gamma, brightness, etc?
Sorry If these are too many questions to ask.
chartwel 02-04-08, 09:13 PM there is no solution. your tv cannot handle full range which is why you are getting black crush. you would not have to adjust anything on your settings if your tv supported it.............
you would be able to use spydertv, etc on the ps3, but my suggestion would to do it with RGB limited to stop the crushing. im sure you will get a decent picture after calibration.

chartwel has pretty much already answered this (dont use RGB full), but I'll add some comments.
RGB full/limited only affects RGB output, not component output. So, if you have not specifically set the PS3 to force RGB output in the "BD/DVD Output" settings, then the RGB full/limited settings will have no affect on BD or DVD.
To echo what chartwel stated, RGB full causes issues with blacks because it remaps the video levels to PC levels (it actually does something weird, but that is beside the point).
Bottom line.. turn RGB to limited, turn Superwhite On, turn BD/DVD Output to component (YPbPr), and then calibrate your set correctly.
EDIT: $50 is not cheap for an HDMI cable. Try monoprice next time.

hwjohn (or anyone else),
Would you make these same recommendations concerning an A2000 SXRD with a PS3 (I've been trying to get this question answered by an authority for some time)? It should be noted that the A2000 does not support HDMI 1.3 and Deep Color.
PS3 Manual on Super-White

Here's my guess on what to do:
RGB = Limited
SuperWhite = Off
BD/DVD Output = ???
Thank you in advance! :)

yes, turn superwhite on, and set BD/DVD output to YPbPr

RGB = Limited
SuperWhite = On
BD/DVD Output = Auto or YPbPr
Superwhite simply allows BTB and WTW data to pass when using YPbPr.
I would recommend this for any set using HDMI.
Thank you hwjohn and chartwel for the settings and explanation!
I'm guessing "auto" is fine for "BD/DVD Output" because it would just "auto"-matically choose YPbPr for my setup when playing Blu-rays anyway, correct?

Yes, it should. You can force it to YPbPr if you want. Every BD/DVD is encoded as YPbPr.
