View Full Version : Flea HDMI – so far I like it for HD
Hi guys – This Noise reduction unit is the first display “add-on” I have ever purchased. I am a complete novice. I bought it for the LCD I have in my den. Comcast cable TV only – No DVD or anything. This unit does a fine job on HD to my eye. I eats all mosquito noise, eliminates halos on athletes heads in HD, seen for example in a full court sprint during a basketball game. It eats the graininess out of backgrounds, blue skies for example.
It does reduce micro blocking – If I freeze an image of a flashing strobe for example, and split the screen to show processed / unprocessed – The processed side will show less blocking, and a more rounded type blocking. It seems to tighten the image – Example, the puck flying across the ice during the Bruins game on NESN’s great HD feed.
It will not however, make the Celtics away games in SD watchable. In my area, all away games are carried on the world’s worst network – Comcast Sports Net. It still sucks. I just don’t think there is enough data in these feeds to do anything with. Home games are on MOJO.
I have found that it seems to work great on HD – I’m still playing with the SD settings but I haven’t yet found a setting that provides much of an improvement to the crappy SD feeds without causing a claying effect on the really good SD feeds.
I would buy it again – Just for HD –
Suggestions for a good SD setting from other owners are appreciated.
Thanks
JJK

Couple the Flea with a good scaler and you'll get impresive PQ on your LCD.
baddgsx 02-11-08, 09:47 AM how about on HD DVD or BLURAY? do you have any of these sources in your setup. Do you see any improvement on these aswell. I was thinking about getting the Flea for my setup.
But i read some threads and they said that the flea isnt really needed for HD content.
Any body else running a FLEA or mosquito on HD content?
Rammitinski 02-11-08, 07:52 PM It won't be huge, but it should make a difference. At least that's what I've read in all the reviews.
Anyone tried with 1080p/24 input signal? Any significant improvement?Does this Flea works well with AVC/VC1 movies?
Hothersale 02-12-08, 07:30 PM Anyone tried with 1080p/24 input signal?
The Flea only accepts 480i/p, 720p and 1080i, doesn't it?
EDIT: Sorry, no you're right. I haven't tried 1080p24, but I assume it would do just as well as it does with 1080i.

I've got it running 1080i, and it does an elaborate job with the image.

Bluray content is digital not analog, the flea removes analog artifacts present in SD signals. If mosquito noise is present on HD dvd content it's too subtle to be recognized, caused by bad meg-decoding...if it does resolve it, the results will be too finely gradient to be recognized consistently.
The Flea HDMI was an excellent addition to my HT. There's just really no competing product right now. My only complaint is that with RGB signals it expands to PC levels. This is a bug that as of yet hasn't been remedied by Algolith. It's not a huge deal as long as you recognize it and your display/processor can compensate properly. With YCbCr there's no problem. Both of my D* boxes utilize RGB over HDMI exclusively though so it's an issue for me.
The other issue has been lack of multichannel LPCM support so caveat emptor if this is important in your system.

What do the firmware updates improve on th flea?

Here's a list of the firmware for the various models. Click on release notes under Flea HDMI for info:

Flea does a great job with HD satellite/cable & SD material in my setup. With HD optical media the results will depend on the quality of transfer.
