i just got the 40g ps3 today from circuit city. The ps3 was not in a bag but it was wrapped up in this white sheet thing, the controller was in sort of a big bag and not taped up, the power cord was not in a bag, and there is no ethernet cable....is this normal, just curious cause circuit city can be shady sometimes. Is this just how the PS3 comes now?

Take a look at some unboxing videos on youtube to see how it should be packaged. Or call Sony to find out how it should be received.

Umm... yea, that is how they are. Putting the PS3 in a bag would be a waste of packing material. They put that white styrofoam-esque sheet around it and then it stays secure by the cardboard holders. I believe the 40gb also does not come with an ethernet cord. Don't be paranoid.

Did you get an update disc? my first 40GB had one,but when i returned it for another 40GB(kept freezing on the XMB) it didn't come with the update disc.

yeah i got everything spider man 3, the update disc all that.........i guess i should stop being paranoid, i just recently had a bad experience with CC over tv's so i got a little paranoid about this. But i wanted that free remote so i went to cc:p

there was actually 3 discs when i got my first 40GB PS3, it contained the update disc in a cd case, that welcome to PS3 disc,and spider man 3.

what would you need that tho for really, you can just update through the settings anyways right? my ps3 was version 2.0...now its currently updating to 2.10

True^^^ I just found it weird that the replaecemnt didn't come with the 2 discs that were in the first one i bought.

No big deal though.:D maybe the packer just forgot to put them in? happens.

I think we were talking in another thread before, mine was bad as well, I replaced it and the new one is perfect, but when I was taking the first one back today (I got the replacement 2 days ago) another guy was returning a 40g and exchanging it from the same batch as my first one, manufactured in Oct 07..

By the way, if you are planning on buying a new 40g unit, look on the top of the box, the region 1 logo for DVD, if it's a white background with black text that is the older box and probably one of hte october or before, my november box had a black background with white text for the region 1 logo (it was inverted basically from the other two logos right by it) plus the model number and Serial number logo sticker was way bigger and the model number was just the main model number and left off teh extra stuff after a / on the first one.

Anyway, the new one works great, box lists everything that should be included as well on the top or back, I forget which.

when i got my 60GB it had been opened, turned on, adn then returned becasue nothign was sealed properly, and there was a user already set up.

and i ahve had zero issues wtih my PS3 since i bought it

Interesting..i actually didn't look at the manufacturers date on mine i will check it out thanks for the tip!;)

And yeah my first 40GB just kept crashing at the XMB, and i think it was just a faulty system out of the box because it wouldn't recognise my HDMI connection at first,and when i got my replacemnt PS3 and it recieved the HDMI signal when i turned it on i knew that my first 40GB PS3 was defective.

This replacement works great! i must have just had a defective console with the first one.

On the top of the box it's all white,yet on the back of the box it shows the Region 1 with white lettering,are you sure it's the top of the box or the very back?

Ok I just checked on my box, the far right logo the region one with a little portion of a globe in the corner is a black background with white lettering bascially.

I played through all of uncharted thursday non stop and I don't think the fan kicked in once, the room was pretty much just room temp.

The same thing happen to me.. I actually got half way home and while i was in the car i started to open the box because the seal looked funny. As i pull out the parts i see the plastic bags were taped badly and stuffed in box. So i make a immediate u-turn back to Circuit City. I went inside and told the clerk that they sold me a used PS3. He tried to tell me that they come in like that sometimes. Well, as soon as he said that i told him to get me a manager. The manager said it was new and started pulling stuff out of the box. He then unraps the PS3 and there was a big hand print on the unit.. Then they start apologizing.blah, blah. I asked them for something for my trouble. He knocked $20.00 off. If i buy something new I dont want a customer return.

Wal mart is the king of retaping used boxes and putting them back on shelves selling them as new. Prime example was years ago when my parents needed a new vcr, we went to walmart because it was the only place open at that time of night and we got it home to discover the box had been opened from the bottom and retaped perfectly, but it had been used. how do I know? well there was a porno still left in it from whoever returned it.
