I'm planning on wall mounting my new Sharp 42" LCD and I would like to route the cables down through the wall, into the basement and up into a kitchen cabinet on the other side of the wall.

I've got old horse hair plaster and lath walls. I'm not sure how to finish around the hole in the wall where the wires enter/exit. How is this typically done? The plaster is brittle and just cutting a hole and leaving it like that won't work well over time.

I plan on using 1/2 of the kitchen cabinet for the compoents. The bottom is currently empty. Should I just build plywood shelves for it? I was thinking of maybe wire rack shlves so it gets more ventilation. Should I partition the cabinet? Probably store kitchen stuff in the other half.

I plan on cutting some largish holes and installing some fans to ventilate it in and out of the basement. What type of fans should I use?

I'm trying to do this right, but do it for as cheap as possible.

Thanks,
Jason

As shown above, Hometech also stocks some decora style face plates that give a little cleaner look. The problem I have run into with wall mounting LCD/plasma is that the newer HDMI whether it be from monoprice or bluejeans cable is thick, rigid and will not give much. This becomes problem if your mount only tilts and does not articulate away from the wall which would give you more room for your HDMI/componet cable.

Monoprice has similar wall plates but the bulk cable port protudes backwards into the wall rather than out from the wall. These might provide a cleaner install.

That's a good idea. I might have to get kind of creative on how I mount them through the plaster. Maybe I lose the old work swing out screw mounts and glue some vertical strips of 1/4" plywood behind the edges of the hole. I could screw in to those and it would reinforce the loose lath.
