Hey guys, I've been playing around with my PS3 (which i just got this past sunday from WallyMart)

I've noticed a total of 3 times now, the system has hung or froze on the main XMB/dashboard thing page. When this happened, i was not able to restart the system via the remote, and was required to restart via the power button (hold 10 secs) on the FRont of the PS3.

Anyways, just wondering if I should be taking the system back to exchange for another, OR is this a common issue? It does have the most recent update on it too.

note - the system could not be in a more ventilated area. Just sitting on top of a table out in the open.

If this is a normal thing to occur every once in a while, then i will just hang onto it. However, if not, let me know and I will return it for another.

That's not normal. I'd take it back.

Definitely not normal, had mine for ~6mo and only froze once.

Ok, maybe i will take it back tonight. I'm being mr mom tonght, so If i take the little boy with me, it might just make 100% sure they give me no hassles....lol.

then again it;s wally mart so they will probably have some teenage girl who dosnt give a crap and will exchange it with no hassle. They probably dont even really go through the box to check that everything's there.....hmmmm? ;)

The funny part about that is I've taken my kids with me to return electronics in the past and said it was for them. I went to target (strict return policy) and returned a set of clearly used walky talkies and the guy was giving me a hard time until I said "Look man, my son here (he's like 18mos at the time) is pissed off because these dont work very well. I dont know if you have kids or not but when he wants to talk to me, he wants to talk to me. These say a range of 5miles and I dont get no 5 miles outta them man. Do me a favor and just take the things back so I dont have to listen to him cry about it all day"

He just looked at me funny and started entering SKUs back into the computer. :)

Had my PS3 since November. Played Madden 08 (which is whoopin my ass) for hours, Virtua Tennis 3, HV Bowling and others no problem. Watched a few Blu-Rays, had music rocking all night during parties - never any glitch. Watched movies off my memory stick, left it on all night countless times. Loved my PS3 and it has been great to me.

Then I bought Rock Band.

When I thought it couldn't get any better, it has exponentially. Now me and all my middle aged buddies, Girlfriend, and Kids all fight over who's playing what. Ive played it night after night, hours at a time no prob.

Decided to have a "Rock Concert" at a buddies. With his setup I had to lay the PS3 on the carpet. Hooked up the gear, we commenced to rocking. 2.5 hours into our show and it happened -

It locked up. Screen froze. Music stopped. Buttons useless. Had to hard reboot w/ power button. Came right back up. No problem.

Took the tour back to my house. Happened again in the song selection screen. Once more on the XMB screen. Starting to get a lil nervous fellas. Anyone else had similar symptoms? Haven't really read much on PS3 failures. Did I get the bad apple? What to do, what to do???

LOL. I keep saying to my son the following (also ensuring the wife hears)...

"hey buddy, I bought you all these cool toys for when you get a little older....Nintendo Wii, PS3, Hometheater room with 130" screen (almost done), Guitars, computers, and motorcycles"


....Its just a total coincidence that I have the exact same interests as my 15 month old son.....;););)...haha

I just got my ps3 last night, and it just froze on me in the menu, already? is this normal once in a while, or since i just got it, should be worried?

i think it's not a hardware issue, i think it's the result of the actual firmware that was recently installed. but i may be wrong. because i have been hearing similar issues all over the place, and i have reason to believe that the firmware maybe at fault here.

Looks like Sony has something to fix in the next update. XMB randomly crashing.

Just got back with my exchanged 3days newer ps3. Will not go back through the set up process (i changed a lot), Then down load all my demos again..:(.

Not to change subjects too much, but does anyone know if you can set up more than one Online id (new) using the same email address? Or is it 1 username/gamertag thing per 1 email account?

Anyways, thansk for the advice everyone. I shall report back on my freezing issue. I will still install the latest update, if it continues to freeze, i will see what my options are.

Had mine since November as well. I have had one or two freezes. Nothing more, may be worth keeping an eye on the forums.

mine use to freeze as well when i first bought it.
then did the latest FW update and been okay since.
i'd check the for the latest FW first before returning it.

i downloaded version 2.10 yesterday when i got my ps3, it froze on me during that, so i shut down the ps3 from the back, then turned it back on, and it said it was installing the update. a little while after that the xmb froze on me.....then today, just a few mins ago, the menu froze again while i was trying to look through the settings.....should i return this? or is this a fluke thing?

Sounds like at least three recent PS3 buyers floating around here have gotten abnormal freezes in the XMB. Out of curiousity, which sku do you all have and are you all running the latest firmware (2.10)?

Bought mine in Nov. Its an 80GB 2.10 firmware. I was afraid since I laid it on the carpet that had something to do with it. Like I said earlier it has been flawless before that. If I remember correctly it carries a 1yr manufacturers warranty? Got it at BB so I'm sure if I have a prob they'll make me ship it back to Sony. I'd definitely like to make sure my $500 investment is running at full health but I DREAD being without my multimedia center for weeks, paying $20 in shipping to receive a: "Sorry sir, we could not duplicate your problem..." I work at a car dealership. I KNOW how that stuff works :eek:

Last night after a "Rock Concert" I went to quit Rock Band and hit the lanes on HV Bowling. I hit the PS button on my drums - nothing. D pad worked, PS button still lit up, no function on that or my face buttons. Everyone else's controls worked. I do fully extend the cord from the PS3 to the couch. I wiggled the USB cord in the slot, started working again. Man I hope my peripherals aren't going out already. This stuff costs too much to break like this. I've also noticed when Bowling, the bowler will not start his motion sometimes. I don't know if the motion control does not detect or the game hangs up. WTF? What is going on with my stuff? I hope this is just a bunch of coincidences. Should I send er back to have it looked at?

ok well i exhanged my ps3 at CC, the one that kept freezing on me, and this new on i got seems perfectly fine, hasnt froze one...sweet!!!

Make sure you turn off that crappy info screen on xbm. This last update 2.10 has caused some network problems that is now just cropping up. The funny thing is, the system worked flawlessly until they added that media server.
