Didn't see a semi-official DMC4 thread yet so here it goes.

Who has it? Who's playing it? I should have my copy from gamefly Friday or Saturday. Post your impressions please!

I haven't had a chance to play it yet either, but judging from the reviews, it's great for those who enjoyed the 3rd one. I wasn't really one of those people, though, as I never got off my ass (or is "on" a better description?) and never beat the game even though I own it. As before, it's extremely difficult, but this time around the highlights are its graphics, sound, and presentation. Hmm.

Mine shipped today, and I cannot wait to play it! This is only the second PS3 game I bought on the first day, other than NG Sigma.

I was up late last night practicing jump cancels, lol!

Totally underwhelmed by the demo. The DMC series has stagnated which is disappointing because the first game was an absolute barnburner. I picked up Sigma instead, now that is an action game.

ROFL! Sorry I know we shouldn't be going that route on console bashing but I never heard that before and I found it hilarious. Thanks for the laugh. I haven't played the demo yet. I may check it out and see if the game is worth my time. I did however enjoy DMC 3. Hope DMC 4 lives up to the hype.

Hmmm! Topic is 'Devil May Cry 4 Thread'

We want to know about the full released game, not your experiance with the demo. WTF! There is a separate thread for thoughts on the Demo.

Sigma: Great game but, been there, beat that, twice. DMC2 was stagnated, DMC 1&3 were great games. I hope DMC4 continues on the same path as 1 and 3.

Heh, I can imagine that install time is painful. It's always so exciting to unwrap a new game and slide it in to your "trusty" PS3. Then to have to wait 20 minutes for install... Still, that's nothing compared to old school PC gaming. "Please insert disk 7" :p

Anyway, I'm eagerly awaiting your impressions. I fairly recently finished DMC3, but I wasn't entirely sold on 4 from the demo.

It takes 20 minutes to install?!?!

ex0du5
02-06-08, 04:23 PM
Yeah lengthy install. Seriously not a huge deal, since the reduced load times should be well worth it (at least you can go do something else during install times...with load times you're stuck waiting there). Also, they explain a lot of the back story during install, so it's not all wasted times.

They should still made it optional though...lord knows what were to happen if all games came with mandatory 5GB installs.

DubBucket

It takes 20 minutes to install?!?!

Yeah, it's a trade-off.

"Once installed," he claims, "the PS3 version of the game has near-Super Nintendo speed load times. You'll be amazed how fast levels load, the virtually instantaneous transition from cut scenes to action and that you're continuously playing the game."

The key word there is optional. Obviously, transferring many gigs to the hard drive will take a while.

I really hope Sony puts a stop to this. If every game starts requiring installs... it won't be pretty, especially for 40gb owners.

number1laing

Many games do install a chunk, for example Ratchet & Clank was 400 megs. Warhawk was 960 but I can understand that because of its downloadable origins. Requiring a 5 *gig* install is crazy though. Even an 80 gig HD can't hold much of them + the media content Sony wants you to use your PS3 with + PSN content.

Copped the 360 CE version, game is a blast, so far. Much harder than I thought it would be from playing the demo (I started in Devil Hunter difficulty).

The opening cutscene battle is sick... gets you really hyped to play the game.

I don't feel that DMC has stagnated, I think that they do quite a good job keeping it fresh. While some may disagree, the difficulty is not as controller smashingly frustrating plus I just like the gameplay more FWIW. Yes it is a challenge and no I'm not the worlds best gamer but NG is difficult to the point of not being fun at all. DMC is difficult but not so difficult that it ruins my experience.

Technical question.

I have both an Xbox 360 and a PLAYSTATION 3. My display is a 60" 1080p plasma display.

I know that the Xbox 360 has a hardware scaler in it and the PS3 does not. Does this mean, that with both consoles set to output 1080p, that the 360 picture will be better?

EDIT: I'm assuming that DMC4 is programmed to output 720p by default.

joeblow
02-06-08, 09:52 PM
No, it doesn't work like that for any game. Capcom rendered the visuals in 720P, so that is the best you can get. Your console, AV receiver and/or HDTV may manipulate that to other resolutions, but it will never be the 1080P experience that a true 1080P game will be. Bottom line... you will not see anything better by artificially changing the resolution from what the game was designed for.

Stangs55
02-06-08, 10:23 PM
Fate, both consoles will look identical. Get the one whose controller feels better in your hands. It's single player only, so there's no online questions to weigh in.

Yeah, veterans should definitely play Devil Hunter difficulty to start. I hear it toughens up midway through but it's easier than DMC3 so far (I'm at Lvl 5). Playing the demo I think helped to make it easier... I'm already half-way decent with Exceed combos for the extra damage. Good thing it has several tougher difficulties available once you beat it.

Obviously, since your system has never had a problem, there is no problem. The two times Microsoft extended 360 warranties, the gigantic threads about broken 360s on every gaming forum, the $1 billion Microsoft loaned to pay for fixing systems, the system redesigns to better draw away heat from the GPU, that was all a joke because your system has never faulted.

I'm personally passing. DMC4 looks like more of the same. I never thought the series got better than the 1st one and I own all 3 PS2 versions of the game. I'm in agreement that it has stagnated. Same stupid dialogue (yes, I understand that's supposed to be part of the "charm" or whatever), same aggro music blasting through the whole thing when you are fighting, etc., etc. I thought it was cool the 1st time. I don't need it a 4th time. I haven't seen anything on DMC4 that makes me think it will offer me something that the first one didn't other than the fact it is in HD. The story never sucked me in enough to really care what happens now.

ex0du5
02-07-08, 01:40 PM
I don't know about you guys...but I absolutely love the dialogue in these games. It's not near as awesomely cheesy as DMC3 was, but awesome nonetheless.

Nero is a much better character than I expected. God, I really need to save prod souls so I can get instant Exceed combos going.

Also, all you DMC vets, don't hesitate to pick this up. It has some minor flaws, and isn't better than DMC3 in every way, but it is an absolutely excellent entry into the series. As for how it stands up to DMC3...well the big disappointment is the lack of weapons. You don't get any different weapons with Nero. Thankfully, Devil Bringer is awesome, and Exceed adds a whole level of depth to the combat. Also, this game has much better enemies than DMC3...the enemy design in terms of looks and attack patterns is far more varied than DMC3. I still miss the Hell Vanguards though.

joeblow
02-07-08, 02:15 PM
Dante has all the weapons you need though (and styles as well). When you finish you can even use him to play through the entire game. Nero is great for the reasons you mention... Devil Bringer and Exceed combos. I think Nero was designed to be straight forward but effective so as not to overwhelm newcomers by having too many options.

The story in this one is at least decent so far compared to the overly-corny last one. Plus I can now turn down the volume of the metal music, which itself is great for me since I never liked it. Besides that, it is a very fun update of the series, but is certainly not offering anything beyond terrific graphics for those who didn't like the gameplay of the first three releases.

Hey those are game caches... You do not have to keep them on forever. If u dont play for example a game like oblivion which takes 4.4gbs... U can simply remove it and save space :) Applys to all games that require a installation.

Even combined, isn't that rather low for a game launch? Something just doesn't seem right with those numbers, especially for a title I thought was suppose to be huge in Japan.

My PS3 is dusty, why am I "out of luck"? It still plays games and BD movies and doesn't get any hotter than normal. It seem to run like a champ, even with dust on it! Every month I vaccuum dust from the vents, but don't bother dusting the surface, should I be worried.... In fact I just played Warhawk and Unreal Tournament III last night and there was in fact a lot of dust on it.... hmmm... why am I "out of luck"???

I didn't think the normal difficulty of NG Sigma was really that hard, but it seems like most people in this thread disagree. I think DMC3 was harder, but maybe that's because DMC made me feel bad for using items, but NG doesn't.

I'm really enjoying this game! At first, when playing, I was thinking to myself, "oh man this is going to be a little dull with the fighting as straight forward as it is". But, I put a real effort into learning the juggle/combo system and it really paided off. The reward is just much better flow to the action and more of a challenge. There deffinitly is a learning curve to pull these types of things off--but it really is deep and rewarding.

The game is just so fast paced with a ton of action, it looks amazing, it supports rumble (DS3), has built in Accomplishments for Home, and network (buddy list) stat pop-ups (explained below).

What I mean by the last part is that is shares game stat info from people on your buddy list. How is this different than Live? Well, as an example, when I first logged into the game and was navigating the menu system, a little pop-up window showed me that person X had already played the game for 10+ hours (he is a game reviewer), and that person Y had the fastest time completing mission 2--it was just cool and automatically built this connection with me and the other people on my buddy list playing the game. It, theroretically could spawn a conversation or a little friendly competition. :)

Installtion! Yes--there was an install as we all know. For me it wasnt a big deal as I was totally expecting it. Secondly, after kicking it off, I went to the kitchen and prepared dinner for the wife and I. By the time I was done--it was done as well (took about 20 minutes). I was watching it from the kitchen and there was a cool little slideshow explaing the history of some of the characters providing some backstory. It was kinda cool! Atleast they put in an effort to entertain and inform while the installation was being performed. It's worth mentioning that once in the game--it was very ZIPPY! The longest load time I saw for anything was almost a full 2 seconds--that's it! It's just totally worth it, but hey, maybe that's the PC gamer in me.

I should mention that I got my DualShock 3 controller in from play-asia as well and not a moment too soon. The game fully supports it and it is awesome. Highly recommened! :)

I should mention that I have my PS3 hooked up to my 46-inch Bravia via HDMI. I want to mention that I think this game is right up there with Uncharted as one of the best looking games of this generation. It just so "clean" through and through. No tearing, no slow down--it's just so crisp! The action is well choreographed in the (in-game) cutscenes providing much entertainment.

The actual feel of the gameplay is just spot on. Jumping around dodging stuff, bouncing off walls just feels so good! Nero (havent had the chance to play as Dante yet) is agile, responsive, and I love love love the Demon Hand. I've grown accustomed to jumping up in the air, snatching someone up with it and hacking, slashing, and shooting them only to juggle them until I grab them once more slamming them into the ground below with the Demon Hand. Also, Nero isnt annoying at all (as I figured he would be). Yes, there are a LOT of one-liners in the game (from both Nero and Dante), but it's DMC and it has always come with a little bit of cheese in this regard--and I'm OK with that.

One new thing I noticed is that there are now Secret Missions sprinkled around the game. To find these Secret Missions, you have to find them as they're usually hidden in a picture on the wall or a fountain (to find them, you essentially hit the action or X button near the area). The Secret Missions are similar to the extra missions unlocked in God of War II where you have to perform a certain action several times. For example, the first one I found expected me to kill off all the baddies in the zone within the given time limit. The second one wanted me to kill 5 baddies while never touching the ground. These are not mandatory missions (as it implies), but they offer small rewards like health stones (collect 4 and your max health increases). I like this addition.

The skill/ability system seems to have been revamped a bit. It's now appears easier to navigate and see all your weapons and abilities in one place. There are a lot of things to upgrade between all your weapons and abilities.

Also, I was reminded that this game has some backtracking (a little bit), much like the Resident Evil games. You know, to unluck doors/extend a bridge to open new areas you have to run through an old area to get to them. That kind of thing. That's all fine, but the lack of direction, sometimes, feels a little antiquated now-a-days.

But all in all, I'm impressed with the overall quality of this game and highly recommend it to anyone who likes Action Adventure type of games.

OK, understand that DMC games are about atmosphere, style, and hardcore gameplay technique more than anything else. The story line isn't as important so you can honestly play any game in any order if you are aware of what you are getting into. Still, for story clarification the chronological order of the titles are:

DMC1
DMC4
DMC2
DMC3

If you do want to play all four based on gameplay difficulty, I suggest DMC2 first... it is the easiest. Then play DMC4 because so far it is to me the second easiest. DMC1 and DMC3 are hardcore titles, but if you get DMC3 Special Edition, it can be set for a more forgiving continue system that makes it easier than the original DMC3. DMC1 is less enjoyable gameplay wise since you can't fluidly switch weapons mid combo like DMC3, but it is still the best in atmosphere (IMHO) and the boss fights are epic, even if a bit repetitive since they reuse them several times.

For those of you who already have the game, is this one of those games that is 720P, but if played on a 1080i only TV, it will kick the resolution back down to 480P?

Yep, another one of those.

Uncharted was one of those games too :(.

Does your TV not display/upscale 720p?

Ya, it's not lossless, well it was supposed to be. I'm disappointed by that.

Well with Uncharted, I had no choice, if I wanted to play the game, I could only get it on PS3, so I had to get it. DMC4, I could get on either 360 or PS3.

I have a CRT, Toshiba 46H84 it does 540P and 1080i.

I guess the TV itself could upscale the image coming from the PS3 right?

I have to comment on some of the hate I have seen about the multiple boss fights, who cares, they are so easy its pathetic. Dante plus Gilgamesh means bye bye quickly bosses, and Pandora, best weapon ever in a DMC game.

Just beat it, overall the game is amazing and IMO the best next gen game so far.

One little thing I really freaking hated was the stupid dice Roll stage towards the end, WORST GAME DESIGN EVER!!!!!! Seriously, I hate that part and who ever dreamed it up, needs to perform Seppuku, its that bad. It took me an hour to get through that crap part, because I could never get the right dice rolls and just keep going around in circles on the board, I was seriously thinking of breaking the disc in half it was that bad.

Overall though outside that, the game was good except for the difficulty or lack therefore of. I beat the game in 11 hours and 7 minutes, and in that time, I died freaking once and that was during the 2nd Dante Boss Battle. Every other boss was so freaking easy, even the last few bosses, which IMO were easier than fighting 3-4 Angelous at the same time. After DMC3, the difficulty was kinda of a letdown.

Also, though many have voiced otherwise, after getting Dante I was loathed to play as Nero again. Nothing against him, because he is cool as hell and I hope he is used again. But I just enjoyed playing as Dante so much more, Dante plus Pandora, plus Gilgamesh, Plus Swordmaster Style= best gaming experiance ever IMO.

Got the game yesterday, I like the control and gameply but I HATE how the camera angle sometimes changes when you enter and exit rooms, like I would press UP running into a room and camera would switch 180 degrees and you need to press DOWN to keep running..... I'm spoiled by Uncharted's camera angle....

Just wait, some of the battles, especially against the Angelous enemies are ridiculous camera angles. But the game is good enough, that camera angle issues are swept aside.

I got it on Wednesday and starting playing on Friday. I beat it today and have S rank on all Devil Hunter missions. I'm currently ranked 242 total in devil hunter. Pretty much all Japanese ahead of me. They're crazy good.

This is by far my favorite DMC and favorite "next gen" game so far. Somewhat far away is Bioshock, then Gears of War. The cutscenes in this game are gorgeous. The game is so smooth (except for the forest). The devil bringer mechanic is my favorite addition to an action game... ever. There's still so much to do after beating the game.

There is a pattern with the dice roll.
-Whatever number shown at top (facing up) when you hit the dice is the number that you "roll"
-every number repeats every 6 rotations of the dice

Atleast that was my experience.

I didn't think the normal difficulty of NG Sigma was really that hard, but it seems like most people in this thread disagree. I think DMC3 was harder, but maybe that's because DMC made me feel bad for using items, but NG doesn't.

I had no problems at all with the NG Sigma graphics.

For comparison sake I get much more frustrated with NG Sigma on normal than DMC 4 on Devil Hunter or DMC 3.

About how long is it on an average, "just want to play through the game" approach?

I'd say the game will take you a good 15-20 hours or so, depending on your skill level.

Of course, if you're a DMC expert, you could get by on a first playthrough in probably 10-12 hours.

WOW is all I can say...Capcom really hit a homerun with this one. It really captures the true series and makes it very fun to plan. The graphics arent MIND boggling but they are very good. I love the gameplay too. I hate games where if your not paying attention youll fall off a ledge and whatnot--not in this game. The bosses are awesome to fight, very creative and the cutscenes are as good as a movie. I def will replay this over and over again, I'm really syched about this game....

540p isn't 720p..unless your tv at least accepts a 720p signal, then the game will just drop down to 480p or in your case 540p.

sucks i know for you 1080i only owners, fortunately my 34" Sony 34HS420 accepts 720p so it's not an issue with me.

Anyone working on DMD? I got to Berial before going to bed last night and he destroyed me, I continued and did more of a hit and run which worked much better until he went into DT mode and killed me again.

Anyway great game. Has anyone beat Heaven or Hell yet? I thought it was really fun. First fight against Dante was all of 2 seconds lol.

BTW I'm playing on the Xbox 360 but came here because no one talks about it over there.

I've not really played these games before, but I wasn't too impressed by the demo. The death-metal music that plays when you start fighting baddies really bothered me and (and I got this impression with Heavenly Sword as well) the fighting just seems like button smashing. Maybe there's some finesse to it later in the game, but I wish they'd let you see some of that in the demo.

I'm working on DMD right now. I had to use items against Berial. I'm on mission 4 I think now and I can't stand the freaking mephistos. The frosts get HARDCORE too. So they throw like three mephistos and a frost at you... tough :(.

After having completed the game once (Demon Hunter level), here are my thoughts (minor spoilers)....

The graphics, frame rate, and animation are all very well done. If Uncharted is an 'A' for visuals, DMC4 is a strong 'B'. The backgrounds in particular are awesome in some areas; I've always liked Capcom's detail for 3rd person games like this.

The play mechanics remain the strongest area of appeal for me in the DMC series, and this game did not disappoint. I miss some of the DMC3 weapons (and I don't like you have to at times double click to switch through three weapons now), but overall the deepness of play options we are accustomed to in the series. There are plenty of ways to string combos together for effective scores, particularly with Dante. He's the advanced character while Nero is the beginner's character (outside of Exceed), and their differing styles make each one a lot of fun to use.

Story wise DMC4 is better in some ways than past titles, but overall it's still rather corny (the heroes) and cheesy (the villains) in its presentation. Not bad though.

I do have disappointsments with the title. Firstly, I wish it wasn't as easy on DH as it was. For newcomers the difficulty may be perfect, but Capcom should've opened up the Sparda difficulty from scratch, or made DH a true challenge while newbies tackled Human level.

While minions have always been pushovers in the series once you are proficient with the attack system, the bosses often made you work a lot harder to take them down on your first go-around. I breezed through pretty much every boss except the very last one before the credits, which I don't count for reasons those of you who beat it may understand (I don't want to spoil it). Since the game is tougher I hear on the harder levels (with new boss attacks opened up), this isn't a major gripe but hopefully next time they account better for veterans.

Another complaint I have is that the amount of backtracking is absolutely ridiculous. Pretty much the entire second half of the game is a replay of the first half in reverse. I think you even do that forest part three times. Part of the fun is constantly going through new areas, and once you switch to Dante that preety much ends.

Overall my score for DMC4 is an 8.0. It is a nice evolutionary addition to the series, but not quite up to DMC3 IMHO for overall "fun" based on one play through. I still look forward to playing it a few more times because the core fighting engine is indeed really, really good.

Hey guys...I know this thread is inactive anymore, but I rented this game and am stuck.
I defeated the gigantic snake and ever since then I've just been roaming the whole map trying to find what's next?
There are still two little parts on the map that are not connected and I can't figure out what to do to get a land bridge to them?

Also, there is a blue skull(would be #4 of #4) that is on the under side of a bridge. It is arched up top and I cannot get to the skull no matter what I do.
