View Full Version : How to save an extra $240 and more as a NEW DirecTV customer
jacmyoung 02-06-08, 04:24 PM Moderators Note: At the request of the OP, please note current deals from DirecTV have changed since this topic was originally posted. Please read the entire topic before acting.
Over the past few weeks I have gone through a great deal of pain placing a new DirecTV order. The reason for me to switch from Dish to DirecTV for HD probably needed no explanation. After the trial and error, a lot of effort had paid off and I have posted my experience somewhere else but totally forgot to do so on Avsforum, the place I started my online browsing and posting in the first place.
For those considering signing on with DirecTV, you would agree by reading below there are some good deals out there that are better than you can ever dream about. If you found the information helpful and in need of someone to refer you, feel free to PM me.
This deal involves an AAA membership but when you read through you would find out an AAA membership fee is well worth the savings you will get from DirecTV.
Call this special #1-800-242-9114, select “1” for new account,
Tell the rep you want to place a new order and get the AAA deal, $10/mo. off for 24 months, you will give two pieces of information, the first 6 digits of your AAA membership #, which depict the region the AAA office is located, and second the county of residence, no personal AAA information is given to D*.
Confirm that you will get the $20/mo. off for 12 months new sub deal (a deal called 2007 Q4 which is unofficially extended to 02/26/08),
Tell the rep you have a referral for an additional $50 off, and the other person gets a $50 off also,
Tell the rep you want the free Showtime for one year promo too, this one is also unofficial,
And if you like to you can add autopay, and you MAY get a $50 visa card if you do so,
Confirm that you will still get all the regular freebies such as 3 months free all movie packages if you get Choice Extra package or above, a $100 instant rebate if you order advanced hardware such as a DVR, an HD receiver or an HDDVR, for example your first HDDVR will cost you $99 ($199-$100) plus tax, only one such instant rebate per account,
You can now ask for a second HDDVR for $99 too with this AAA promo, or a second HD box for free, this one was brought up by another member.
Confirm that they will waive shipping and handling fee.
They will do a credit check with your SSN, if you don’t care for that they can check using your name and address too. You may need a major credit card if the hardware you order requires some upfront charges. They will need the DirecTV account # from the person who refers you to qualify for the referral discounts for both of you.
Setup an install date and off you go.
Keep in mind there is no guarantee implied here from me for anything above. I decided to do this because I had talked to no less than 20 D* reps so far, many of them had no clue themselves, but I was finally able to confirm many things said above, either by finding someone at D* who really knew, or had some of them dig up the rules in writing and read to me, or from many folks who read my thread and were successful getting those deals.
A few pointers:
1) You may get the run-around by some DirecTV AAA reps since not everyone there know the unofficial deals, if you don’t see yourself getting through to that person, feel free to call back talk to another person.
2) Some of the deals will probably show up on different computer screens so you may have to start the ordering process for them to check your AAA status and credit before the rep can confirm all the deals above.
3) Once you have placed the order, go online to setup your DirecTV online account and you will be able to see what is in your order, and verify that you do have all the deals in there, if you don’t see all the things in there after a few days, you might want to cancel it and re-order. Sometimes even if you ask the sales rep to confirm everything on your first call, they can still manage to leave out a few items for you, the only way to fix that is to place a new order, but cancel the old one first.
4) As far as AAA membership, I think it is well worth the $55 fee to become a member for this deal, with the AAA card you will find so many deals out there upon asking, not just DirecTV. But even if you refuse to be an AAA member, you may still do something about it, read my post between the lines, but do so at your own risk.
In the next post I will copy a sample online order status page to give you some idea what codes you should find to confirm all the deals above. Good luck!

jacmyoung 02-06-08, 04:46 PM I forgot you should ask for three month HD Extra pack too. I asked for it after the installation was done and got it that way.

I have already submitted my online rebate request to claim the $20 off for 12 months, it will take 6 to 8 weeks for this one to process before it will show up on my bills.
The $50 referral will show up on my 3rd bill in $10 for 5 months. Whoever referred you will see a similar discount show up on the other end.
craigchev 02-06-08, 06:04 PM this is it,count me in!bye buy dish without my NESNHD!
hell,I hope I get a flat tire next week!
SheepNutz 02-06-08, 06:13 PM So how much do you end up paying per month for the first two years? Also, what if I have nobody to refer me?
jacmyoung 02-06-08, 07:15 PM So how much do you end up paying per month for the first two years? Also, what if I have nobody to refer me?
When all is said and done, you get about $10 off for months 1 and 2, $40 off from months 3 to 7, $30 off from months 8 to 14, and $10 off from months 15 to 24.
So $530 in all, not to mention those extra breaks on programming and hardware, you can PM me for referral if you don't have anyone to do it for you.
jacmyoung 02-07-08, 09:18 PM More than one person has told me the 2007 Q4 ($20x12) deal is gone, only $10x12 standard. So be aware if you are told so it may not be worth the time to insist the sales rep give you $20x12 or re-order.
I will try to fine out more since the rebate form clearly stated 2/26/08 the end date for 2007 Q4 deal. DirecTV may have decided they no longer need to give away this much.
Beerstalker 02-12-08, 11:34 AM This sounds great, and I am very temped to do this. I have been debating switching to DirecTV for a while now, but I don't like the fact that I have to buy the HD DVR up front, and then still pay monthly rental for it. If I can really get 2 of them for $100 I will probably do so.
Was anyone able to find a good sales rep that knew about all of this stuff? If so please try to post a name and direct phone number as that will make everything much easier for the rest of us.
SheepNutz 02-12-08, 11:49 AM I just got my dish installed from this deal yesterday. The installer couldn't believe that I got two HD DVRs for $200. I told him about the deal, and he didn't know what AAA was (then again, he needed a phone, and I handed him my iPhone, and he had never seen or even heard of one). Unfortunately, I thought that the HD DVR would work with the SDTV in my bedroom, but he brought HR21s instead of HR20s, so I could only get one HR21 installed, and he took the other off the bill. I'm going to have to add on an SD DVR to the bedroom. I don't know why they switched from the HR20 to the HR21, it seems that the HR20 has more features, it's like a step backward. I'm happy with the dish, even though I've already had to go out and remove snow and ice from it.

You could have used an RF(?) modulater to change the A/V output to RF signal on CH3 or CH4 to feed your SDTV using a single pre-wired coax cable. Though an SDDVR should have been free had you ordered that way initially.
jacmyoung 02-16-08, 09:02 AM Two updates.
One that it seems the AAA # department does not work 24 hours, if you call during off time the call will be switched to regular D* sales and that maybe why people had hard time getting the 2007 Q4 ($20x12 off) discount combined. So try to call during the day or business hours see if your luck changes.
Secondly, I called the AAA # pressed "2" for existing subs, and got the 2x$50 AAA discount for existing subs added too. Now I don't know if they will reject it later if they don't let people combine AAA discounts themselves but for now my order went through and I have a confirmation #.
If it goes through my 2-year contract will be renewed, in this case extended by three weeks. Stay tuned.
jacmyoung 02-22-08, 02:25 PM Just a reminder that the 2007 Q4 offer ($20 off for 12 months) will end on the 26th. Of course a new promo will replace the current one after that date, but detail is yet to come out, especially those that are not publicly promoted. The standard promo after 26th will not be as good as the 2007 Q4 offer.
It is my experience though when some good promo went away in the past, something else would take its place so to balance things out.
chrisjs81 02-23-08, 03:58 PM So when we order we should just refer to it as the "2007 Q4" deal? Did this used to be on their website for ordering or on any mailed promos? Is there a copy of this rebate form with the 2/26 date on it somewhere?
I just know when I call they're going to have no clue what I'm talking about.
Thanks :)
jacmyoung 02-23-08, 11:23 PM So when we order we should just refer to it as the "2007 Q4" deal? ...
Yes. If the sale reps never heard of it ask them to do some research or ask to speak to a supervisor.
You will receive the $20 rebate form if you get it in your order, the link is:
http://laurenstephens.net/uploads/7c8668a5ba.pdf
But you can easily submit online a few days after installation.

i had to place my order through the forum sponsor's website i bought my tv through to receive $$ off my tv purchase, so i ended up calling the AAA # after the fact (actually called the regular dtv # first and was told to call the AAA #. regular # told me the promo was for $10 off for 24 months... not 12??). the AAA people said i'm not a new customer b/c i activated yesterday. then got bumped to customer service, who said a rebate for would come in the mail.
after going online to their rebate center, it only lists my account as eligible for the $10 per month for 12 months... not the $20 one. am i getting confused between two different offers? if i submit the pdf from jacmyoung and my account doesnt qualify for it somehow, do you think it will go through?
also the first and only regular rep i spoke to had never heard of and couldnt find the "showtime for 1 year" promo. any ideas?

I have yet heard a single instance when one managed to modify the promotional items after the fact. The AAA discount is not a rebate, you get it by calling that AAA # at the time of ordering and if you qualify the discount will automatically show up on your bills. You do not have the AAA discount nor $20 off rebate because you ordered through a different arrangement, in this case a special TV offer line. But you did get a good discount on your TV didn't you:)? I think you should mail the $20 rebate form in just in case they will give you that, the worst case you get only $10 off for 12 months but I would follow up with calls to their rebate center to be on top of the thing to make sure they don't deny you the rebate all together, at least you should get $10 off for 12.
BTW did I mention the AAA discount for EXISTING DirecTV subs has just ended this weekend? But the AAA promo for NEW DirecTV subs will go on till the end of 2008.

guess i should have pressed 2 and talked with their existing customer people D:
edit: just confirmed that the AAA promo for existing customers is in fact over (at least for now) ...was only $10 off for 5 months, vs the 24 month deal for new subscribers.
edit2: after multiple calls to both the AAA line and the regular one, i got pushed all the way through to the "customer retention line", where they applied a credit to my account manually. yay!

The AAA deal for existing sub was a $50 credit on the 2nd bill after the call, then another $50 credit on the 13th bill, a total of $100 credit in exchange of renewing a 2-year contract.
What kind of credit did they apply for you? BTW good effort there.
Beerstalker 02-25-08, 11:27 AM I just called and ordered. At first the guy didn't think he could do the two HD DVRs for $99, but after he plugged everything into the computer he found out he could (he thanked me for teaching him something). I also got the $10 for 24 months, but he said he didn't know anything about the $20 for 12 months, and if it existed he said it would get rid of the $10 for 24 months discount. Is this true? Do I need to call back and try to get the $20 off for 12 months added?
Anyways, thanks for the info. It finally pushed me to switch to Direct TV and get rid of cable. I'll probably keep standard cable service for a couple months until I can get my locals over Direct TV though.

my understanding was that the AAA promotion was $10 off per month for 24 months, for a total value of $240 off.
since i was only able to submit the online rebate for $10 off for 12 months, the rep gave me an additional $10 off for 12 months to equal the total $240 off.

The $20 off for 12 months is still offerred in selected regions, and it can be combined with the AAA discount. The only way to add it back on is to cancel the order and re-order, and make sure the sales rep know what it is. However as I said not all zip codes get this 2007 Q4 deal.

Then you are getting $20 off for the first 12 months, which is the equivalent of the 2007 Q4 ($20 off for 12) many of us are getting, except we also get $10 off for 24 months AAA deal.
You still don't have the AAA deal but you got the best you can since you did get a good discount on your TV by signing on with DirecTV.

yeah the guy said the most he could put on there without the deal was the additional $10 for 12 months, and that I should call back at the end of 12 months. supposedly he made a notation stating as much.
i doubt anything will come of it... i'm glad i at least got something.
chrisjs81 02-26-08, 01:10 PM I just ordered and had partial success. Purely FYI, I got:
$10/mo x 24 AAA discount
$10/mo x 12 Advertised discount
$10/mo x 5 Referral discount (and $50 for my friend)
$50 giftcard offer for auto billpay
Free Showtime for a year (She immediately knew about this when I asked)
HD DVR for $99 (I only wanted one)
When I asked about the $20/mo offer she initially told me it was over and after pushing a bit she said it was only for certain regions and when she put in my zipcode it didn't come up as applicable.
I tried to push a little about the lack of HD CW and PBS hoping to get some concession towards an AM21 (when released) but this rep didn't understand what "over the air" was. :rolleyes:
I haven't received the email confirmation yet. If I find out something didn't get processed right I'll reply to this post.

After installation you can easily call up DirecTV retention department and tell them you are so surprised there is no OTA (assume you will get the HR21), your (fill the blank) is about to kick you out of the house soon if not fixed, and they will quickly add notes in your account to receive free AM21 when available, shipping included.
chrisjs81 02-27-08, 10:06 AM Looks like the national advertised offer is now $18/mo x 12, but the base rates have gone up $3/mo.
In case you just ordered and are considering canceling to reorder:
Under the new offer + AAA, PLUS HD DVR would be $44.99/mo for 12 months, then $62.99 for months 13-24.
With the old $10/mo x 12 + AAA, PLUS HD DVR was $49.99/mo for 12 months, then $59.99 for month 13-24.
So, with the new offer you could save $60 more your first year, but pay $36 more your second year, saving $24 overall. However it appears the auto billpay credit is now $20 instead of $50 (though it's a bill credit instead of a prepaid cc). So that's $30 less. I have no idea if the Showtime for 1 yr offer is still around today.
I just ordered.
I was able to get:
$10 off per month for AAA for 24 months
$13 for current promo for 12 months
$10 off after complaining that the online promo was for $18 and they were only offering $13 over the phone, for 12 months (needed supervisor approval)
$50 Referral
Stars and Showtime for 3 Months (current Promo)
Showtime for a year (needed supervisor approval)
Second HD Receiver for Free
Couldnt get them to waive the shipping charge though.

Most of us were getting $20 off for 12 months so the old deals were still better, but the new ones are not that far off.

Congrats! You effectively had $20 off for 12 months, but my suggestion is if you have not yet registered online, do so and if you don't mind post the online details here similar to what I did to confirm those deals.
Our experience has been just because some supervisor verbally approved something does not mean you got it. Your chance is 50/50.
I also want to suggest anyone who wants to order in this new promo period ask two more things:
1) Whether DirecTV will match Dish Network's three-month-free promo, if not how about the first month free. I learned one person got the first month free but I wasn't able to confirm it.
2) If you intend to order HDDVR, ask if they will offer it for free, if so how many. Because your cable and Dish Network and pretty much everyone else is leasing HDDVR with no upfront fee.
joemama127 03-05-08, 11:57 PM I'm going to refer a coworker thinking of getting Direct TV to this thread and see if he can snag some deals. I have considered getting Direct in the past but now hearing that they do a credit check (I would pass fine, just don't like any snoopers dinging my name with a check) not to mention all of the different discounts and supervisor waivers would most likey result in a billing nightmare in the future....good luck to those who get exactly what they were promised on the phone at exactly the agreed upon price...every month.;)

Yep.
I recorded the call too (yes I don't believe anything I'm told), just in case they tried to change things up on me.
Happy to post the order, actually, after my original post I called and changed the second box from a HD receiver to a standard DVR.
PLUS HD DVR P000006364000000001 1 Free
HD Access_Tier 1 P000006376000000001 1 Free
DIRECTV HD DVR (Expanded HD Prog. Capable) 1 Free
DIRECTV 5-LNB Multi-Satellite Dish 1 Free

Like the earlier post the AAA discount is not reflected nor is the current promo discount yet (I did question that and they confirmed they would be after installation).

Like the earlier post the AAA discount is not reflected nor is the current promo discount yet (I did question that and they confirmed they would be after installation).
The "B6291/020" is your AAA ticket, the $13 off for 12 is a standard deal, everyone gets it no need to confirm. A few days after installation go online and submit a paperless rebate request, it will show up probably on your 3rd bill.
You are good to go.
I'm going to refer a coworker thinking of getting Direct TV to this thread and see if he can snag some deals.
That is why we confirm the deals before installation so there is no guess work.
jacmyoung 03-06-08, 11:04 AM Just an update for those reading it the first time, with the AAA deal you should ask for:
$10 off for 24 months;
$18 off for 12 months;
Up to two HDDVR's for $99 each or up to two HD receivers for free or up to two DVR's for free;
$50 friend's referral;
The standard 3-month free movie deal;
One year Showtime free;
$20 (?) visa card if you don't mind using autopay and keep it for at least the first 60 days;
Free shipping and handling.
You could also take it a bit further, if they would give you HDDVR for free like every other company does, and if they would match Dish Networks's three months free deal.
jacmyoung 03-08-08, 01:36 PM BTW, the "$120 CBO" (cash back offer) appears something new for the period, it may be DirecTV's way to match the Dish Network three months free deal. So ask for that, tell them Dishnetwork is giving you free the first month, can they do something to counter that.

Just a fyi, the way that I got it was complaining that the website offered an $18 per month credit for the first 12 months while they only offered $13 over the phone.

Where exactly can I find the paperless rebate request?

BTW, you may even get both the $120 CBO and $18 off for 12 months, don't say I did not warn you:)

Thanks for the link, and the inspiration on the 18 and 120. The install tech blew off my appointment today (called multiple times saying he couldn't come to late and then just didn't show). Seems like a good enough excuse to ask for some more discounts :).

Call DirecTV retention and you should get $100 off for each no-show.
Here is another advice, when bad things happen during installation, always call DirecTV for resolution, not the installer and his company. Let DirecTV handle it that will get things done quicker and you can get compensated easier too.
geotlyrae 03-15-08, 12:03 PM I dropped D* a couple months ago, but now Am not satisfied with Dish. (have no contract with Dish) . Got an e-mail from D* to come back, but pretty much same discount as website and need to dial special #. Do you think this AAA discount will work in my case?? I'm ready to try it..

If possible sign on as a new sub. You can use a different person in your household, and/or a different ph#.

Thanks, they did that no problem.

Thinking of doing this Monday.. My place needs a new installation. You keep mentioning Shipping and delivery. The deal they got for me now with the special#, includes installation. Can you clarify?? I may need to PM you..
geotlyrae 03-22-08, 04:29 PM Also, not sure bout the referral, since I dropped them 2 mo ago. Want to use my wife for the account, but the AAA is in my name..
Beerstalker 03-22-08, 04:38 PM I would think that you still can get the AAA discount. They only want the first 6 digits of the membership number, that pretty much just gives them the area you are in. You could use anyone's member number from your area I think.
Also, not sure bout the referral, since I dropped them 2 mo ago. Want to use my wife for the account, but the AAA is in my name..
Doesn't matter who's name its under, they don't ask you for the membership number or name on the account. All they ask for are the first six digits, which just tell them the region and club of AAA, nothing personal.

The $19.95 "Shipping and Handling" charge is for them to ship the equipment to the installers, not to you.
stoneyreef 03-22-08, 04:51 PM I just bugged the crap out of my rep for a change over from Dish to Direct and he also gave me an additional $300 savings book for pay per view. Essentially that is 60 HD movie rentals.
All this is in addition to what is listed above.

As long as the account is ordered as NEW, referral should be fine.
It appears AAA # is not tied to our names, but I have read a few that did not end up getting the AAA discount, even though signed on with an AAA code. There is a possibility, though not likely, that DirecTV could try to verify your membership.
One of the reasons for my suspicion is I heard AAA gets a referral fee too for each AAA member signing up with DirecTV, it is logical to think before DirecTV cuts AAA a check they could ask AAA to verify the member first.
However even if this is true, no one has lost any other discounts as a result.

geotlyrae 03-22-08, 07:44 PM Just read my great comeback offer, and here's an excerpt from it:
PROGRAMMING OFFER: Offer ends 6/24/08. Featured package names and pricing are as follows: CHOICE $52.99/mo.; CHOICE EXTRA $57.99/mo. Account must be in "good standing," as determined by DIRECTV in its sole discretion, to remain eligible. Limit one bill credit offer per account. IF AFTER 12 CONSECUTIVE MONTHS CUSTOMER DOES NOT CONTACT DIRECTV TO CHANGE SERVICE, THEN ALL SERVICES TO WHICH CUSTOMER IS SUBSCRIBING WILL AUTOMATICALLY CONTINUE ON THE 13TH MONTH AT THE THEN-PREVAILING RATES, INCLUDING THE $4.99/mo. LEASE FEE FOR THE 2ND AND EACH ADDITIONAL RECEIVER. In certain markets, programming and pricing may vary. May not be combined with any other offer.
CASH BACK OFFER: Offer ends 6/24/08. To receive $96 CASH BACK offer, customer must complete redemption form that will be mailed automatically 3-4 weeks after DIRECTV System activation, or redemption form may be downloaded at www.directvwelcomeback.com. Upon DIRECTV System activation, customer must complete and sign redemption form and mail to: GIFT REDEMPTION, P.O. Box 425, Mira Loma, CA 91752-0425. Form must be received by DIRECTV within 60 days of DIRECTV System activation. Upon receipt of completed form, DIRECTV will credit customer's account $8 a month for 12 months to the name and address used to activate DIRECTV account. Allow 6-8 weeks. Reproductions of redemption form strictly prohibited. DIRECTV not responsible for late, lost, illegible, mutilated, incomplete, misdirected or postage-due mail.
STARZ/SHOWTIME OFFER: Offer ends 4/30/08. STARZ and SHOWTIME free for three months, a value of $69. Offer void where prohibited. IN THE FOURTH MONTH, THE CUSTOMER'S STARZ AND SHOWTIME PROGRAMMING SUBSCRIPTION WILL END.
stoneyreef 03-22-08, 08:47 PM BTW, a little known fact is that you are signing up for a 24 month committment but you're not really.
Direct has a vacation feature where you call in, say you are going on vacation and the account can be put on hold for up to 6 months and you get charged nothing!!! So if in 18 months Dish ends up being the real HD leader or a better offer or they catch up, you can put Direct on hold and sign up with Dish.

Not much of an offer IMHO.
The only thing I see you may have problem signing your wife on as a NEW sub is your acct was on until two months ago, if that turns out an issue, tell them you have no clue you just moved in this address yeasterday and your landlord is paying your phone bill too. Of course you need to train your wife to make that call:) or if you are like me, I simply called myself with my wife's name, and prepared to tell them my mother gave me that name because she always wanted a girl, so I had been livng with the consequences all my life. But they did not even care to ask:)
stoneyreef 04-27-08, 06:43 PM Well two months into this nightmare.
I was given a $300 savings certificate booklet for Pay per view. It never arrived.
I was supposed to get the referral credit. It never happened.
So I just spent the last hour on the phone with a service rep who told me that they shipped the booklet on April 2. She also told me I was not eligible for the referral credit because I did not call the right phone number even though the sales rep submitted it.
Did I mention I called last night and they could not do anything because their computers were down?
So I sat here for an hour on the speaker phone cruising the web waiting for a supervisor.
I have to admit I was not very pleasant with him, but I was not impolite either.
So I am supposed to get my savings booklet yet, I told him I would give him until the next billing cycle.
He manually did my referral credit so I will be getting that.
Additionally to make up for all my trouble he is supposedly giving me HBO free for 3 months. We shall see.
If I have to call them again, it will be for the address of where to send the notice for small claims court.
Hi,
Just double checking what the current list is:
* $10 off for 24 months
* $18 off for 12 months
* Up to two HDDVR's for $99 each or up to two HD receivers for free or up to two DVR's for free
* $50 friend's referral
* The standard 3-month free movie deal
* One year Showtime free
* $20 (?) visa card if you don't mind using autopay and keep it for at least the first 60 days
* Free shipping and handling
* $8 off for 12 months for returning customer (mail in offer from www.directvwelcomeback.com)
Does this look right?
Also, do the reps have quotas, and is it therefore best to call at the end of the month?

I don't know about that, this deal is for NEW subs not returning subs.
Though you can use a different name in the household to sign on as a new sub.
It was about 3 years ago that I dropped DirecTV, but ok I will use my wife's name. Thanks.
Edit: I called 3 times and ended up with the following deal. FYI for everyone else...
* $10 off for 24 months (AAA)
* $18 off for 12 months (DirecTV national deal)
* $5 off for 12 months (Deal for former BellSouth area customers)
* 1 HD DVR for $99
* 1 HD receiver for free
* $10 off for 5 months for friend's referral (for me and friend)
* The standard 3-month free movie deal
* Could not get the 1 year Showtime for free
* $20 credit (or maybe its a Visa gift card?) for signing up for autopay
* $19.95 shipping and handling (could not get free)

The one year free Showtime might have expired just recently.
You should call back and ask for two more: the $300 value Welcome to DirecTV gift book, and one year protection plan free. You can do so before installation, but after installation you will no longer be a new sub.
jacmyoung 05-08-08, 12:34 AM Well two months into this nightmare.
I was given a $300 savings certificate booklet for Pay per view. It never arrived.

My speculation was you need to wait at least three months to get that gift book since it contained coupons for free premium movie packs, and you are getting free movie packs for free the first three months, but only my speculation.
The only reason I can think of not getting the referral credit is if the person who referred you somehow canceled his own account or was disqualified from referring someone.
Now THIS is interesting! I've been looking for a way to dump Dish without paying more ($65/mo) and this might be it.
Question: The savings is over 24 months. I've read that the contract is for 24 months. Does this mean that my contract is up at the same time my AAA savings ends? The obvious answer seems to be "Yes" but I'm just checking that there isn't something that says the contract timer starts when normal (i.e. no discounts) prices kick in (i.e. month 25).).
By my calculation I can save:
$240 -AAA (24 X $10)
$216 - DirecTV national deal (12 X $18)
$144 - Cincinnati Bell (save $6 a month by bundling with phone/DSL line = 24 x $6)
$50 - Referral discount
Total savings = $650 over 24 months. After figuring in the $100 start up cost for a HD DVR with normal price being $83 (Choice xtra, HD, DVR, 3 rooms) it works to an average monthly rate of $60.08.
So I'd save roughly $5 a month for 24 months over Dish (Total of $120 for 24 months). Seems like a lot of work to line all of this up for $5 a month but I'm game.

Yes the contract is 24 months only, but be careful, after installation, every time you accept some discount offer, or add a receiver, or even replace a receiver, may extend your contract by another year, need to watch out and clarify each time.
TravelFan1 06-05-08, 11:37 AM hi all, I am just wondering if anyone knows what's the current AAA promotion.
I am planning to call this month, I was waiting for the trees near my place to be, if you will, full with leaves, etc, before calling, just to make sure I will not have LOS issues. Thanks.
Is there still a AAA promotion? What is the best offer people are seeing for new/returning customers?
jacmyoung 06-26-08, 02:57 PM This thread is for new subs, not returning subs, though even if you had DirecTV before, you can still return as a "new" sub, if you have been without DirecTV for over a year maybe, or if you simply moved, then just call back with new info and order as a new sub.
Or if you are still at the same location, use a different name in the household, the same ph# and address don't matter. Some reported to use a different ph# with the same name and address to order as new too.
The current deal is:
$23 off for 12 months;
AAA $10 off for 24 months;
Up to two HDDVRs for $99 each or HD/SDDVRs for free;
$50 referral discount;
Free HBO, Starz, Cinemax for three months;
Free Showtime for one year;
Free S&H, location dependent;
One "welcome to DirecTV coupon book", a "$300 value";
Some also reported to get one year protection plan for free.
If you are in the Verizon service area there is maybe $5 to $10 extra off each month as long as you have Verizon phone and/or Internet services.
TravelFan1 07-10-08, 08:23 AM jacmyoung, what's the July deal? I am planning to call them as soon as possible. Thanks.
opie168 07-11-08, 07:41 AM I called last month and was easily able to get the following with the first person I spoke with.
$23 off for 12 months;
AAA $10 off for 24 months;
HDDVR & HD receiver & std Rec. & Std. DVR for ~$200 (so 1 hd free and other 2 $99 each)
$50 referral discount;
Free HBO, Starz, Cinemax for three months;
Free Showtime for one year;
One "welcome to DirecTV coupon book", a "$300 value";
one year protection plan for free.
The only thing I can complain about is that the discounts show up on my order but I can not activate them currently and was told b/c my account was just activated 24hrs ago and they should display in the rebates page about 48hrs or so after that. Also For some reason I'm not getting Cinemax but am getting my showtime hbo starz. I'll have to call about that later today and figure that out.
The lady I spoke with was Sandra in the Miami Office if your able to get through to her. I didn't have to beg or push hard for any of them what so ever, and a few of them she brought up first.
TravelFan1 07-11-08, 09:20 AM I ended up calling yesterday and here's what I got:
Premier Package + Sunday Ticket for 74.99 month/4 months
1 HD DVR free, due to the promotion above
1 HD DVR $99
$10 off/month AAA for 24 months
Show free for 1 year - actually, 8 months, after the premier promotion expires
$50 referral credit, $10 per month for 5 months
$5 off/month for 12 months - in lieu of the $23 off by getting the premier package
6.99 S & H
And I also got the phone # to call Verizon and get an extra $5 or $10/month(attendant wasn't sure). I haven't called it yet, because I am still unsure whether I'll have LOS or not.
I have my fingers crossed that I'll have LOS this time, I checked yesterday the position of the D* HD antennas in my complex and I compare with, if you will, "open air" from my porch, , I think I may. We'll see - installation scheduled for Wednesday, 06/16.
All that said, I haven't received the e-mail yet, as of last night. I'll check when I am back home later tonight.
