I am pretty good at counter strike on the comp so i know how fps shooters work, but, im used to keyboard and mouse.

im going to get cod4 when its on sale but was wondering since i already play fps games on the computer should i just skip the single player and get online where all the fun is?

on the other hand, maybe i should play single player first to get used to the new controls with teh ps3 joystick?

what to do

I been playing PC games for years including CS, Battlefield, DoD, etc. You get used to the controller format. I actually likes it because it actually feels like my fingers are on a trigger. I just wish there was type-chat on the PS3 version like on the PC version.

Besides getting used to the PS3controls, COD4 has one of the best single player campaigns ever! Something you definitely don't want to miss. I still put on the sniper level on hard every now and then.

i got a kick out of the single player. wish it had been longer.

like you im used to the mouse+awsd thing and it is taking some getting used to for me to use the controller for FPSs.

i wish more developers would include keyboard support for crying out loud. UT3 if the only FPS on a console that i know of that supports it. ive not played it yet but ive thought about it for that simple fact.

Coming from a CS background, a long time ago that is, I LOVE COD4. I think it is as good or possibly even better. Might be just the thing if you are getting a little tired of CS.

My guess is, if your like me, you are going to HATE the controller at first. Depending on how many console games you play, and how familiar you are with the controllers, you will probably have a lot of trouble adjusting. But it surprised me how good you can get with the controller. Not quite as good as K&M, but pretty close, and everyone else is in the same boat as you anyway. If you stick with it, you'll get used to it, and really enjoy the game.

You might want to try the SP first if you are going to be really pissed off getting owned in MP while trying to learn how to aim :p

I for one am glad they don't support K&M. If you want to play with K&M play a computer game. Its ridiculous for power gamers to expect the game to pretty much let them cheat by making it easier for them to aim than anyone else. Console = controllers, computer = K&M. Don't try to cheat against us casual gamers...you already have an advantage.

As someone who start playing fps's on the computer long before they had a breath of life on consoles (besides the anomaly of Goldeneye), I'm going to have to say that you need to at least do the first act of the campaign before you bring this game online. Your CS experience will definitely help you when you first bring it online, but not knowing the gameplay or anything when you're playing against people who play all day the first time is going to make you want to throw your controller.

A good plan would be (as you stated) to play through the single player campaign first, simple to get a feel for the controls and to put in some much needed practice in terms of aiming and just general aspects of the game - plus the single player is quite good....short but still good.

Another idea would be to set up some private matches and go it alone a few times, that way you can familiarize yourself with the maps and there hiding/sniping spots within each. This also will give you the opportunity to try different weapons, adjust controller settings and find the sensitivity level that is most comfortable to you.

Trust me, unless you want to have an extremely frustrating time, at least in the onset (seeing as your a PC gamer who's use to k/m controls and now is going to a console platform with controllers) I think it be wise to play through the single player first then get your feet wet in the online arenas - there are plenty of excellent players online these days and they have no mercy for the weak, novice player.

See you on the killing fields:)

yeah, play it through.

It is short, but its really fun and there are very unique missions.

Right after I started playing CoD4, I just knew I couldn't get the hang of the PS3 controller (I'm used to FPS with K/M), so I got one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/SplitFish-Gameware-PS3-fragfx108w-Playstation-Controller/dp/B000S14FNO

Works great!

I second the vote for the fragfx controller. I just really don't like the controller for fps so to me the fragfx was just what I needed. Its not quite as precise as a mouse but its close.

Definitely give it a try!

FragFx FTW. Big increase in survivability quotient, and kills.I think it makes the player who owns you with a controller all the more impressive. There are some serious badass controller users out there. I just wish the up down tracked as well as left right. I have been killed way too many times from above while I tried to get my crosshairs up, to be happy about it.

I'll also highly recommend the Splitfish FragFX controller. When playing CoD4 and in the heat of battle, I would continually "melee" my opponent when actually what I wanted was just to center the sight. This usually resulted in my death 90% of the time. With the FragFX, no more such issues and I'm finding it much more accurate than the standard PS3 controller - and it works with all games.

Splitfish is reportedly working on a Bluetooth version, and I think this would be even better without the hassle of wires.

In UT3 they have keyboard and mouse, but if i remember right the two can't co-exist in the same game due to the unfair advantage.

What is on sale to you? The lowerst I have seen COD4 is at 39.99(Target) and 49.99 (Walmart).

I can tell you that on my side I never played FPS anywhere before. So to me playing thu eh 1P helped me a lot. I agree that MP is where all the fun is but you shuold also experience 1P.

I also recommend going through CoD4's Campaign (single player) mode first. This will get you comfortable with the game, and should give you the skills you need to play online in multi-player mode. :)

I played the first 5 minutes of the single player and said screw this ... lets go multiplayer. You're going to learn one way or another ... might as well score some online points while you're at it.

Yes, it's true the FragFX is not perfect, but despite all it's short-comings, the FragFX does delivery as advertised. I'd be the first to admit that it may seem a bit cumbersome and even a little awkward at first, the updating process can be quite tedious and I hate using a wired controller again, (ah, bluetooth has spoiled me so:)) but all-in-all I'd still recommend the FragFX to anyone who maybe on the fence. It's definitely increased my accuracy and thus my overall enjoyment of COD4, funny how that happens.

Once the FragFX is updated, and once you've adjusted the individual button sensitivities to you liking, well I think you'll find it quite superior to the sixaxis, at least in FPS's - then again the sixaxis isn't really that hard to adjust to, basically it comes down to what your more computable with and if your willing to spend another $40+.

I had about 24 hours played online before I touched the single player campaign (which I really enjoyed). I was a big CS guy back in the day, and CoD4 reminds me of the addictive nature of that game. However, since then I have been playing more and more console games and less computer games... so I was used to the controller and such. I'd suggest playing some or all of the campaign on normal mode before you jump into MP just to get a feel for the controller.

I played through the Campaign on the hardened setting. I then went online and proceeded to get my a** thoroughly kicked until I logged in about 14-15 hours and got more on-line experience. Now I'm consistently in the top three at the end of the match. Please feel free to join me on-line...I'm always looking for fresh meat:)

^ oh dear. im very good in counter strike. maybe ill buy the game this weekend if its on sale because i am very curious how good people are on consoles.

prepare to get shanked boys!

i see they have a warhawk wednesday where people from this forum play together. why nothing like that for cod4 here?

there are a couple of negative cod4 threads here. the one where people cheat by changing the colors of their name and another one where some patch that was done which made the game more frustrating for many. that and the kb/m issue are reasons enough for me to wait for a sale instead of paying $60 for the game.

Knifing someone in cod4 is about 50 times more likely than css, so it's really not an embarrassment or a testament to how unfortunate you are or how much you suck in this.

Hey there. I'm a CSS Addict!! I got a PS3 three weeks ago and bought Resistance and Call of Duty 4. Oh-my-god. They're both phenominal console first person shooters. PHENOMINAL. Play through the campaign on both, for reals, you will thank me later. But yeah, I've heard CoD4 online is amazing. Unfortunately, I don't have fast enough internet to compete. My CSS on PC works fine though.... bleh!

Honestly. I bet 95%+ of the people who are complaining would even agree.

Alot of the problems are isolated to a few people. Or at least to people who are more sensitive to them. There is a huge install base and the number of people who are complaining to the point that they don't want to play anymore are in the minority big time.

Buy the game and enjoy.

The game is really good, the lag issues are real and annoying, but it usually happens in like 20% of the games for me, you'll see every now and then that it's difficult to kill moving enemies since even though you think you're shooting at them, they are actually like a second ahead of where you are shooting at (the kill cam will show it when they turn around and blast you), but besides that I think it's pretty good game.

what happened to the 1080p visuals??

i recalls seeing 1080p as an available resolution on the case in blockbuster but when playing, my 1080p sammy says its only 720p (1280x720)... what gives??... some scenes do look nice despite being 720.... i like the zoom feature (when zooming in to something out faraway, things close by become blur...).

you have to force-upscale it by unchecking 720p and 1080i in the XMB display settings

I've just got one piece of advice for anyone who's about to attempt the single player for the first time.

Play throught the game on the Medium difficulty setting. Anything more than that and you'er gonna find the game frustrating. Medium still puts up a decent fight, and the game is still plenty intense. If you feel like torturing yourself with the harder settings you can do that later.

Don't bother fiddling with forced 1080p resolution on CoD4. The game prefers to output at 720p, because it's actually rendering internally at 1024x600 and upscaling to the output resolution. Forcing 1080p just makes the game do more of the scaling, instead of letting the TV do it. You're not going to get any better detail at 1080p, because it's still rendering into the same 1024x600 frame buffer.

i've completed it the game on monday since picking it up on friday from blockbuster...

palyed it on regular... some levels are pretty tense.... the ac-130 level is like a cake walk though... i don't think you can die there... otherwise i did like the game...

well i guess i'll just play it as is (720p) resolution when i rent it again... got to 6th rank on multiplayer online though... i definitely need more practice... will be playing the arcade part again for practice... gotta get back to warhawk...

"Death From Above" is more a change of pace than a serious challenge. However, there are a couple of ways to "lose": either kill your own guys (dropping a 105mm shell on them, for instance), or kill a civilian (the drivers of the two trucks that the SAS team hijacks). Either one will send you back to the last checkpoint.
