Do not have internet in my house, only have a sprint wireless card for laptop to get internet

So if you do not have internet access, there is no way to download demos and games on pc and use usb port to ps3?

What about updates? Thanks

Google "Internet Connection Sharing". You use an ethernet cable to to connect the PS3 and computer and share the computer's internet connection. I use this method to connect my 360 to my wireless network to avoid buying the wireless adapter. Should work for the PS3 as well.

Googling "Internet Connection Sharing" brought this site as the first result. Quit being so lazy. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics

You can download firmware updates with your pc here. Check the link below. You have to transfer the file to a flash drive and update thru the ps3's usb ports, or memory card slots.

You can only download demo's/trailers thru the Playstation store icon on the ps3. You cannot connect the ps3 to your Sprint wireless card. You need to get internet access to the ps3 by other means.

Why do you think he can't use ICS?

If your laptop has an ethernet jack you should simply be able to plug your PS3 into the jack in your laptop and share your active internet connection. I did this last year with my 360 that was plugged into my PC (which got wireless internet from the router on the second floor of the house). I do the same thing when I'm at home with my mac laptop so I can use the 360 in the basement despite our wireless router being on the second floor. It should work just as well with a PS3.

i do not think that will work, the problem i am running into is that i use a verizon wireless card for the internet and unk if you can share the internet from the card.

Keep getting mixed results on if this can happen or not. thanks all

found one option of buying a router where the card goes right into the router, but that is $200 and need to find a cheaper route

I purchased a Kyrocera KR1 which is a lil' hodge-podge of a workhorse [ultimately] to create a home network. Basically it is a wireless router that also has a 4-port ethernet setup...aaaaand...a PCM-CIA slot for my Sprint EVDO card. So with the single device I can now accommodate my [20GB] PS3 connecting to the internet, various PCs & laptops [some wired...some wireless] in the house now being networked, networked printer, PSP jumping online at a moment's notice, etc. Sweet deal for me...and would seem it might fit your bill as well.

Ooops...looks like you just posted about finding something similar to my KR1. That was indeed ~ $200. But for me anyway, that was money well spent for what it allowed throughout my home.

It doesn't matter how you get your internet connection, simply that you have it. Googling "internet connection sharing evdo" gave me this: http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/59/63/

That's really just a link explaining how to turn on ICS, but at least it's directed toward using Verizon EVDO cards.

I used a sprint wireless card for a long time before I finally upgraded to DSL.

Originally had my laptop hooked up to a router via ethernet cable and used the wireless on the PS3 to connect to the internet. Later, I also found out hooking up an ethernet straight up to my laptop from PS3 also works.

DLing content however is so tedious, and playing any kind of online game will frustrate you immensely.

Make sure you are sharing this internet connection and firewalls are not preventing the connection.
Go to network connections, properties,Internet protocol, properties, and configure it to obtain ip address automatically, do the same for DNS server and see if that works.

It should, you just don't have wireless capabilities. Run an ethernet cable from your laptop to PS3.

Labonte,
reading over the thread I noticed you said you had a wireless router, you might try running the ethernet cable to router. Then network connections, properties, ip protcol, properties and put in the ip address manually as well as the subnet mask. The router should have the ip address on it.

When I used a netgear router the ip address was 192.168.1.1

Try that and see what happens.

still no luck, does anyone know how to do this?

has anyone used an air card thru laptop to the ps3 either directly or thru router to get internet in the ps3? thanks

Labonte

have done this, the ps3 finds the ip address of the router but can not connect to the internet.
