Wow. This could be really cool.

http://www.9to5mac.com/xbmc-xbox-media-center-mac-apple-macintosh-mini-appleTV-itunes-345643556

9to5Mac: What does XBMC offer that iTunes/Front Row/AppleTV don't offer?

Elan: Great question...lots of things come to mind:
Resolutions up to, including and even surpassing 1080P (AppleTV is currently at 720P)
DTS/AC3 passthrough (which is great for playing DVD/BluRay/HD-DVD sourced audio). This means if you have a surround receiver you can have it decode multichannel audio
Almost unlimited video and audio format support since we can play anything ffmpeg supports
A great virtual file system layer with support for protocols like UPnP
There is a great looking weather item that puts very useful info in front of your eyes.
Since it is an open platform, the sky really is the limit, things like Youtube browsers, RSS readers, visualizers, MAME/Other emulators are all being integrated seemlessly. Heck, one could even imagine running an Xbox emulator on my quad-core machine...now that would bring us full circle!

This is fantastic!

I have been waiting for an OS X version to come out to retire my Xbox. XBMC is an excellent media center program...just does't support HD on the Xbox.

Can't wait to try it out..

I played around with this on my MacMini last week. It looks great, but I cant get it to play ISO or IFO's. It will stream MKV's from my NAS with no issues. Anyone have any luck with this?

Correct me if I'm mistaken but it's a very early beta release and quite far from a fully functional, stable, release version?

If they can keep pace with development and get the builds going it would be killer.

Mark my words, as an xbmc user for 4 or 5 years now on my limited but useful Xbox, this will be THE media center of choice for the mac platform for years to come. There is absolutely nothing like xbmc out there. Now that is is being moved to more capable and extensible hardware, it will only get even better and gain more functionality. Right now, yes, it is very early, but a 0.1 release has been out for a few days now and it is already usable.

If you think the xbmc UI is years ahead of everything we have now then you have no idea what you are talking about. Yeah, it was cool 5 years ago but it looks like every other 'Fisher price raped a Crayola box' Linux UI that is out now.

I just want Apple to keep the aTV/Front Row experience comparable to VMC.

Click the "Add Source" button and then type /Volumes/"name of drive where your VIDEO_TS folders are located at"

However, I don't think you'll be able to get any of them to play. I don't believe ISO's or VIDEO_TS folders can be played in build 0.1. If you or anyone can get them to play with this build, please share.

It does however, play MKV files very nicely. XBMC on OSX is imo, a very exciting media center front end for the Mac. I still use Front Row for its better UI, but I find myself looking forward to each update of OSXBMC.

Agreed. I'd buy AppleTV's for every room in the house if that was the case. Not likely to happen at all though as the developer has already stated. Still not much more to get a used Mac Mini so works for me.

Actually the UI is fully skinnable so it isn't limited by what the development team comes up with. There is a fairly passable Apple TV clone skin called xTV available, and there are several interesting skinning projects headed towards completion this year. With the sucessful porting of XBMC to Leopard I would think that the skinning efforts would only increase in number and quality.

What XBMC achieves that no other application has touched is its combination of power, versatility, robustness, and simplicity. I believe that it has a development advantage that it would be hard for any other project to overcome. It's simply the best there is at allowing you to control your media from a client-based app.

As far and I can determine. No remote support yet.

I'm playing with it and may well switch over once they get remote support, and Video_TS (vob) playback working. But this is a first release and is going to take some time. Pretty impressive how much is actually working, and working well though.

For now I'm sticking with xHub but will keep an eye on this.

Version Release 0.1.1: got release today.

I like this statement:-

"I’ve retired my Xbox. That’s right, XBMC is solid enough on OS X that I packed up my loyal Xbox and carried it out to the garage. Not having it there will free up room and inspire me to work on getting MAME support in there."

Sweet. :)

http://www.osxbmc.com/2008/02/17/releae-012-meep-meep/#comments

Still no ISO or VIDEO_TS support, but 1080p playback on a Mini is greatly improved. Also, still no Apple remote support.

I'm starting to use this as my everyday HT front end with the AEON skin. It's absolutely terrific!

Any chance of getting a sticky for this thread?

I'm playing with 0.1.2 right now. They added mouse support, which is extremely nice! I have two bugs right now:

1. Issues playing some encoded material (audio problems, for example)
2. Slow to load files over SMB (like 5-10 seconds instead of instant)

It's not quite seamless yet but MAN I'm impressed! I'm running it at 1920x1200 on my 24" Dell LCD and it looks very, very good. If any of you have a Wii remote, you can use Darwiin to map the buttons for XBMC to the remote over Bluetooth.

is metadata supported in this app yet?
it says something on the FAQ about IMDB pulldown, but when I browse my movies I dont see any information or title corrections as if it is getting it from IMDB. Furthermore i dont see cast or director or anything of that nature either.

once the metadata and remote are working...i will be switching over.

Are you viewing your collection in library mode? It only shows data in the library mode. With the exception of a couple of movies (like "300"), the IMDb scraper has been working just fine for me.

Now Tv Shows are a different matter. I have yet to be able to pull anything down from TV.com or TVDB.com scrapers. I've had somewhat mixed results pulling tv show data from the Rage.com scraper. I don't own an XBOX, so I don't know if this issue is just related to OSXBMC.

I was able to get my movies to show up in XBMC today, and I got the xTv skin loaded, so all looks good.

I do have one problem, however. For some reason, XBMC doesn't recognize my network. The network settings are blacked out completely. If that is what fills in the metadata and poster art, I need to figure this out ASAP!

I am going to be getting a mac in the not to distant future for XBMC only in my HT setup. All the video advances are stunning however I have not heard much on audio. Does XBMC for OSX support Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD? If so, is there a particular mac that I need to get to output...er passthrough this? I was leaning toward the Mini simply for size but I could be swayed if needed.

There's no support on the Mac side of things yet for Blu or HDDVD playback, so as of now there's no TrueHD or DTS-HD passthrough. Hopefully we'll have an integrated Blu Ray solution from Apple soon, which should allow for inclusion through XBMC as well.

has anyone else been able to get the xTV skin to work?

i finally downloaded from the SVN, and i put the xTV folder into the "XBMC > contents > resources > skins". The option appears under the skins menu now, but when i select it it only shows the words on a black screen. There is no graphics, images, icons, etc. and there is no highlight to the words selected...so it is very difficult to navigate.

any suggestions?

Once selected, does the screen fade out quickly and return? It should come back with a look nearly identical to Frontrow/aTV. No special enter key or anything, just a second or so after you select it from the "skin" option in setup, and it will change itself.

bluenotedesigns

yeah...if i select the xTV skin, it will all of a sudden black out the screen, then the "new skin" will quickly fade in.

problem is none of the images are showing in the new skin. I can see the skin is changed because the text is changed, and the location of text is changed compared to original theme.

any ideas on making the images appear?
do i need anything besides xbmc installed on leopard to get skins to appear correctly?

attached is a screen grab of my screen after i hit xTV skin on.

I'm using remote buddy with an harmony logitech remote (785) which is working fine with xbmc except the C key for context menu (it's not working for me and i don't know why).

CPU usage is low (10% or so), but it's dropping a lot of frames. Like 400+ in the first 2 minutes of the movie.

Thanks for the tip! There doesn't seem to be a very good manual for most of the XBMC abilities.

Don't know if you've seen this. It's the generic (xbox) XBMC manual. Most should apply. Just the keys / buttons should be different. Though I relize some sub program components have been changed. The settings and such should pretty much be the same. Check it out.

I'm on the verge of getting a new XBOX for XBMC b/c my current one is looking like it's on its last leg..fuzzy screen, freezing...you get the picture.

Anyway, I was googling the other day to see if their have been any big break-thru's for using the ps3 as a media center and I nailed the link to the osxbmc.com.

I've been thinking about it for a few days and I'm not completely sold on spending the money on a mac-mini opposed to a $60 XBOX.

I think my biggest question is...
"Is it worth it?"

My family uses the XBMC beyond what most other families do, due to us not living in the US right now. We actually live in Japan and will be here for several more years.
We can't just jump in the car and take a ride to the nearest blockbuster to rent a movie.

So would it be worth investing on a mini and if so, what kind of power are we looking at needing from the mini to handle the media center?
I read somewhere about it crashing, is it really bad...to the point of being frustrating?
Really, I'm looking for a Media Center with the ability to adapt and grow, unlike the original XBOX, but still be family friendly so my daughter and wife can still use it..

It's worth every single $ ! With your Mac Mini you can play ALL 720p HD movies and A LOT 1080p HD movies. XBMC for the Mac Mini is the best thing invented since plasma tv's.

I gotta say -- after playing with the latest release for the last 2 days, I am VERY impressed, with a couple of notable (and painful) exceptions.

The good:

1) Video quality is very solid. The upscaling and format choices make for more capabilities than front row.

2) The scraping for ripped movies and TV shows (as long as they're well-known TV shows) makes it cosmetically attractive and helpful for those of us that use TTG and archive.

3) the ability to tweak the sync of audio and video is EXTREMELY helpful

4) I like the ability to browse pretty much anywhere with the video running in the background, unlike front row.

The Bad:

1) album art -- itunes' album artwork is entirely incompatible with the way XBMC works. It's going to be extremely inconvenient to work everything out with my 25,000 songs

2) apple remote -- while the latest version has some apple remote integration, it's still not fine-tuned yet

3) lock-ups -- we all know this is still beta, and lockups are expected. But, when this locks up, it REEAAALLY locks up, requiring a full power-button reboot. :(

Overall, I love it, except for the pain of music playback. Heck, even my wife (who generally doesn't give a crap about my home audio, computer, or HT hobbies) said how nice the interface and capabilities are. For the first time, I am actually considering using this as a repository for my backed-up DVD's (rather than my current solution, which consists of 3 400-DVD changers).

Totally rocks. I've used MCE on Windows, XBMC on XBOX, and all the Home Theater programs on the Mac. This is THE BEST and BY FAR.

Thjat said keep in might it's still better and doesn't work perfect. But it's pretty stable and for home media serving it works wonderfully. Even with it being beta all the features that you can only get with it make it worth wild over something more stable but lacking in features.

Where is the user guide for this? I've read the forums and FAQ. Maybe it's with the download of the program which I have not done yet, just wanted to read how to use it before I dive in. Interested in what is Lbrary vs. File mode. I'm using a 2.0 Mac Mini on a Sony HDTV.

I'm afraid but wanna try it. Waiting on some external hard drive upgrades I'm doing before I set up media pointing and try it out.

There is no user guide. Not for Mac anyway. The only user guide out there is for the XBOX version and a good bit has been changed for the Mac version. Of which is only at 0.5.0b8 beta. It's going to be a while before it's a full release.

File mode is folder level browzing of your drives for the most part. Library is with pictures, actor info, movie / tv info, etc in a GUI format.

Which do you use, file or Library?
What do you like or use most with it?
Will it conflict much with setups I already have for Front Row? Any harm in downloading the program to see how it works?

I know some people have issues wupgrading to new releases. Should I wait til it matures? sorry for all the ??

Things I like the most:

1) the attractiveness of library mode. It just looks so polished
2) audio and video tweaking -- in the era of a gazillion different formats and ripped TV shows and DVD's, it helps immensely)
3) once you scan a piece of media in, it doesn't matter where in your network the file is housed -- so, if you're like me, and you have media on 15 different hard drives and NAS's throughout the house, you don't have to slog through each individual drive looking for each piece of media or DVD -- it'll all be there in a nice easy format.

wrt FR -- it will only interfere with front row if you have it set to launch with your apple remote. If you do that, you can't start FR just using the remote. But this is an easy setting to change. Otherwise, it doesn't screw with FR at all.

on the harm issue -- well, every dl'd app has some potential to harm, but I've had a lot of fun playing with it, and I can still go into FR any time I want (but I don't find myself doing that much anymore ;) )

Can someone answer a few questions about this?

1. How do you output it to a tv if you have a macbook pro? (I have a 360 if thats possible)

2. how do people get 720p or 1080i movies?

I would be extremely grateful if anyone could answer. Thanks for your help.

GUYS :)

What would be the minimal config Mac Mini for the XBMC?

What are your configs for the XBMC on OSX :
NAS / Network?
Mac Mini Config?
Issues when compared with XBMC on XBox?

I played around with this on my MacMini last week. It looks great, but I cant get it to play ISO or IFO's. It will stream MKV's from my NAS with no issues. Anyone have any luck with this?

Is it stable in streaming ISOs from the NAS? What NAS and what kind of network do you have?

Whats the config of your Mac mini?

Version Release 0.1.1: got release today.

I like this statement:-

"I’ve retired my Xbox. That’s right, XBMC is solid enough on OS X that I packed up my loyal Xbox and carried it out to the garage. Not having it there will free up room and inspire me to work on getting MAME support in there."

Sweet. :)

--- Where is this from? is it working correctly?

I'm playing with 0.1.2 right now. They added mouse support, which is extremely nice! I have two bugs right now:

1. Issues playing some encoded material (audio problems, for example)
2. Slow to load files over SMB (like 5-10 seconds instead of instant)

It's not quite seamless yet but MAN I'm impressed! I'm running it at 1920x1200 on my 24" Dell LCD and it looks very, very good. If any of you have a Wii remote, you can use Darwiin to map the buttons for XBMC to the remote over Bluetooth.

Whats the status update on this?

I am going to be getting a mac in the not to distant future for XBMC only in my HT setup. All the video advances are stunning however I have not heard much on audio. Does XBMC for OSX support Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD? If so, is there a particular mac that I need to get to output...er passthrough this? I was leaning toward the Mini simply for size but I could be swayed if needed.

What config Mac Mini did you buy?

It's worth every single $ ! With your Mac Mini you can play ALL 720p HD movies and A LOT 1080p HD movies. XBMC for the Mac Mini is the best thing invented since plasma tv's.

What config Mac Mini?

Totally rocks. I've used MCE on Windows, XBMC on XBOX, and all the Home Theater programs on the Mac. This is THE BEST and BY FAR.

Thjat said keep in might it's still better and doesn't work perfect. But it's pretty stable and for home media serving it works wonderfully. Even with it being beta all the features that you can only get with it make it worth wild over something more stable but lacking in features.

Whats your configuration?

I tried it for the 1st time today (b10) on my Intel Mini (2.0 C2D).

Very attractive interface. I was able to browse over my network to my files upstairs. I found the interface a little counter-intuitive.. ie. I wanted to select a folder and hit some kind of "ok".. but I think it came down to going there, then hitting escape, then being able to add it.

Also wasn't able to get cmd-q to work.

And when I changed the settings to full screen.. nothing happened, until I quit (had to force-quit) and restarted it... then it was full screen.

Blows FrontRow away. I look forward to seeing this develop.

There's been a falling-out between Elan's OSXBMC team and the XBMC open source programmers...something about not updating the open source tree quick enough. Anyway I'm sticking with Elan's project, now called "Plex".

I have almost no problems with this, play back SD all the way up to 1080p with fantastic resolution and sound on my 1.8ghz C2D mini. I'm VERY happy with this. I use the xTV skin with it, and a pronto pro remote. Works great!

Yeah, I'm probably going to switch to Aeon because it has the "clips" option which I'm told is a good place to put home movies and random videos that you don't want Libraried or IMDB'd. And it does look sharp.

Biggest thing for me was the fact that you can set a network cache to allow for better bufferring. Front Row 2 doesnt have this option and would stream DVD's over my Powerline Ethernet in my bedroom...

But the interface is awesome ... I plan on installing the Aeon as well!

There's a new development release out for those interested : XBMC forum (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35032)

Disclaimer: I'm one of the devs.

Is this part of the Plex project or a separate one?

No, this is not part of Plex. Plex is a fork of XBMC for Mac. XBMC for Mac is the "official" port, similar to the Linux and Windows ports, developed by Team XBMC.
