View Full Version : Almost done but ...
Theater_nut 02-07-08, 08:10 PM First off, thank you to many of you for providing information/feedback on my build. Among the many who have, BigMouthDC, ChinaDog and Tom Bley come to mind.
I did not do a thread on my build because I found it was easier to obtain information from the forum if I asked a question directly about a specific problem that I had encountered.
Baseboard are going to be installed this weekend and carpet is comming next week. There is still need to do something about the rear window and then I will start building sound panels for the room.
I am also upgrading some of the components and I have one question. The room is 12x20. I am wondering how much power would be reasonable for a room this size? Is 7x140W simply too much ?
Thanks.
Theater_nut 02-07-08, 08:12 PM Note on the right side the entrance to equipment room. The equipment room is 5"x4". A small concession area is to be built on the other side of the door on the left.
BIGmouthinDC 02-07-08, 09:16 PM Great color! Looks like a very comfortable space.
On the amp I don't think it is possible to have too much power (within reason) you are never going to use most of it anyway. It just gives you more headroom for the dynamic portions of your content.
dc_pilgrim 02-08-08, 09:37 AM What is the screen size?
What is the blue light?
Looks very nice.
Tom Bley 02-08-08, 11:27 AM Looking real good. What was the final ceiling height in your room? What are the speakers you are using?
Theater_nut 02-08-08, 11:35 PM > What is the screen size?
The screen size is 120".
> What is the blue light?
The blue light is cool. I told my wife that many people on the AVS forum were giving a name to their theater. She came back within 1 hour with a list of name and I told her that the "Blue Moon" was a cool name. She came back later in the afternoon and she said that she had bought some signs for the theater. This is one of them (See attached). We also have a hand painted tin sign from a drive-in concession stand also named the Blue Moon. This sign will be in our concession area when it is done.
Another interesting tid-bit about the blue sign you were asking about is that I later found that this Blue Moon sign is a logo for a beer company (http://www.bluemoonbrewingcompany.com/). I have not bought any so far but I will have some beer with the name of my theater and with the same logo on the bottle to give to our guests . : )
> Looks very nice.
Thanks. It still needs to be decorated. There will be some posters on the wall along with the sound treatment panels.
Theater_nut 02-08-08, 11:37 PM I should have added that the sign is controlled with an Insteon keypad.
Theater_nut 02-08-08, 11:49 PM Hi Tom,
I never was able to fit the proscenium you had recommended. It would have been great but in one of those front collumn, there is a drain pipe and I just could not fit the speaker in the space.
Ceiling height is 7'6". This was only possible because I relocated all the heating ducts within the room to run on each side of the room within the soffits.
I am using Paradigm Reference Studio for all the speakers in the room. Not sure if you ever auditioned those but there are really fantastics. The setup is presently 5.1 but the room is setup for 7.1. I installed conduits and pull strings to all speaker locations. The current surround speakers will be moved to the rear eventually and I will have dipoles for the surrounds. For amplification (The reason I started this thread), I just went with BigMouth comment and purchased tonight a Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXsi. I will have it tomorrow.
ALthough I did not post any pictures from my equipment room, I have wired the projector such that I will have a UPS in the equipment room for the projector.
Very nice space. I would imagine the Pioneer will serve you well. While we always talk about more ampage = better, I think that as a collective group we tend to over-kill things. I'm just as guilty as the next guy. But in the end we don't end up "needing" crazy amounts of ampage to listen to movies at comfortable listening levels. Sure, 140 amps may not get you to "11". But when do you ever watch a movie at "11."
Anywho, I hope this makes sense. I'm afraid I'm may not be explaining myself clearly. It's too early still and I need another cup of coffee. :)
landshark1 02-09-08, 12:20 PM looks very nice! btw, what kinda chair (brand/model) are those? it seems like w/ 12' wide space, those seat still leave a good bit of room on both side!

Covering a window in your neck of the woods is going to be a little harder then in So Calif. I just DryWall right over it. Then finished it with Frabric Frames. From the outside it looks normal with mini-blinds
How far back is your first row? My room is going to have the same dimensions.
Are you happy with your screen size? It seems a little, well, big. My room is still in the framing stages, I'm undecided on screen size.

Eyeballs are 11 feet from the screen. The screen is 110" it is about 8' x 4'. It was matched to the CRT projector, any bigger and you start to lose brightness. I would have liked larger but an additional problem was the placement of the left and right speakers. I would need to upgrade to a acoustic transparent screen which at the time was twice the cost of the existing Stewart screen.

Cool... looks like your setup is similar to mine. I am using Paradigm Reference as well. LOVE EM. I just got a new Stewart FireHawk screen. I sit about 10 ft from a 100 screen. Here's a few recent pics:

Thank you.

There are similar to last year AV Science group buy from a place in TX. The store in TX did not want to ship to Canada so I found these locally. It appears as if these are sold under various names.
> it seems like w/ 12' wide space,

You are very observant :) It is very close to 12' and it does leave an isle on each side of the side. It works great to get to the rear seats.

Between 11' and 12'. I can sent you PM with the exact measurement since I have to remove everything from the room later tonight for the carpet install on Thursday.
>Are you happy with your screen size? It seems a little, >well, big.
I spent lots of time on the question if 120 inch was too big for the room. I started this project with 96 or 106 in mind but due to family pressures, it ended up being 120'. Even until the last moment while I was on the telephone ordering the screen, I wondered about the size.
Now that it is in, I don't regret it. Keep in mind also that with the various aspect ratios on the DVD that it may not be displaying 120 inch in full vertical deflection anyways.

I have some pictures of the build process here if you are interested:

Yes, it should not be done like you did in CA. There would be a humidity build-up between the "plug" and the window.
I plan on using shades that provide total darkness. It is not good for keeping sound within the house but my neighbour on that side of the house is far enough that I don't need to worry.
New pics?
How far off the back wall is your pj?
