View Full Version : All things being equal, which would you get???
Splicer010 02-07-08, 08:20 PM IF pricing was the same for both HD DVD and Blu-ray stand alone hardware (DO NOT INCLUDE ADD-ON OR GAME SYSTEMS!!!)...AND the studios released the same movies on BOTH formats...which one would you buy and why???
I would buy the Toshiba as I feel Toshiba has a superior product over Sony and is more future proof...
Well, why not wait for the Panasonic that was announced at CES and have the best of all worlds, the interactivity that hardly anyones uses but is the subject of great discussion and the higher capacity and bitrates for Blu-Ray. And, since we're in a fantasy world anyhow, I'd vote for an imaginary player that has all of the best of everything, to the extent the Panasonic doesn't already.
This thread will only have people state their preference and justify it with the same talking points.
What a bizarre question. Obviously this is a question for HD DVD exclusive supporters only, since anybody who has bought into blu-ray has already decided price is not the issue, so certainly they aren't going to change their mind if blu-ray were suddenly even cheaper.
So the real questions is, "is price the only reason you support HD DVD?"
Icemage 02-07-08, 08:31 PM Why do people insist on playing these "what if" scenarios, especially impossible ones, since Sony would sooner eat broken glass than release an HD DVD, and no CE would like to lose as much money as Toshiba currently losing on their hardware.
In the scenario you describe, I'd also be absolute ruler of the world and own all the studios, so I really wouldn't have to decide.
What if Toshiba made a player with a magical Leprechaun inside who cleaned the discs and made fresh magic marshmellows that he pushed out through the RCA jacks?
Really... for most "what ifs" you get ONE alteration of reality. Not multiple.
Splicer010 02-07-08, 08:45 PM Well it is obvious the question is too difficult to answer as evidenced by the ridiculously childish replies so far...Either answer the question at hand or simply don't reply...And if you do have something non relevent to say then start your own topic...
Splicer010 02-07-08, 08:46 PM This thread will only have people state their preference and justify it with the same talking points.
BINGO!!!

In the dream world you described above, you are right...
What is the purpose of this imaginary thread??:o
sivartk 02-07-08, 08:49 PM HD DVD because it feels more polished (GUI, etc). Plus region free doesn't hurt.
Or did you mean all things equal = all things equal.....I took it as price / movie availability only.

No it isn't "oviously a question for HD DVD exclusive supporters only"... Read the question to discover what the "obvious question" is...
Splicer010 02-07-08, 08:51 PM I took it as price / movie availability only.
FINALLY!!! Someone who can comprehend written word!!! :D
Splicer010 02-07-08, 08:54 PM In the dream world you described above, you are right...So you are saying that you would also pick HD DVD???
What is the purpose of this imaginary thread??:o
The thread is real...the scenario is imaginary...
42Plasmaman 02-07-08, 08:55 PM HD DVD because it feels more polished (GUI, etc). Plus region free doesn't hurt.

Polished?
May be in theory and on paper but HD DVD reliability is something not to be desired. Boiling discs, washing discs or exchanging discs in some cases can't get a title to play without issues.
JBlacklow 02-07-08, 08:56 PM FINALLY!!! Someone who can comprehend written word!!! :DThat doesn't make any sense. How can a discussion that specifically says to imagine no price or availability differences be about price and availability?
All the original post is asking for is what brand player you would buy (although you would only have one option for HD DVD).
Splicer010 02-07-08, 09:02 PM That doesn't make any sense. How can a discussion that specifically says to imagine no price or availability differences be about price and availability?I really can't believe that the forum members can't comprehend written words...

Please don't attempt to explain what my OP is asking as it is self explanitory and your explaination is incorrect...

From your post:
"IF pricing was the same for both HD DVD and Blu-ray stand alone hardware"
"AND the studios released the same movies on BOTH formats"
What am I misreading here? Sentence A tells us to imagine the price is the same. Sentence B tells us to imagine the movie availability is the same.
Please don't attempt to explain what my OP is asking as it is self explanitory and your explaination is incorrect...:rolleyes:Again, your post says:
"I would buy the Toshiba as I feel Toshiba has a superior product over Sony and is more future proof..."
Toshiba only makes players. There is nothing else in that sentence that suggests you are looking for any data brands of players.
Perhaps English isn't your first language or something and you lost something in translation, because I'm saying exactly what you said. But for some reason, you refuse to specify what exactly I'm not comprehending. If I'm wrong, please explicitly state where I made the mistake.
jp_tech 02-07-08, 09:12 PM Here we go again. It's almost like people enjoy starting threads like this just to start another flame session. Here's a better question. How many replies can the OP make with the  icon??:rolleyes::rolleyes:
On topic, I would own HD-DVD.
Splicer010 02-07-08, 09:16 PM On topic, I would own HD-DVD.
Thankyou for staying on topic...:D
May I ask why you choose HD DVD???
JBlacklow 02-07-08, 09:19 PM Is there a reason why you refuse to tell me what I got wrong? I've laid out the logic for everyone to see where I'm repeating your assertions, so refusing to answer just makes it look as if you're hiding something. In that case, the thread's bound to be deleted soon.
If EVERYONE kept their responses to a simple UGH! ( as in not another what if I slit my wrists hypothetical thread) then maybe the OP would understand why people are reacting the way they are.
It seems as though you are implying one has to be better, since everything being equal, price and movie support, you would buy one over the other, because in your opinion one is better.
The problem is you have it so narrowed down to fit like a given in a geometry equation there is little room but to support one answer, so you have already skewed the results.
Going by what you are saying, if the air is better in Alaska than in NY, ALaska must be a better place to live.
How about this. If everything is equal in terms of movie support and price, the PS3 is better than the 360 because it has blue tooth and the 360 doesn't.
IF the price on the players was the same across the board... and the price of the movies was also the same... and all movies were available in both formats... and I'm adding an additional caveat that we don't compare combo/twin vs Blu ray so no added advantage there either...
then we are left with HD DVD having more interactive features currently and Blu ray having more storage capacity currently.
For this example, storage capacity must not matter because movies are said to be available on both formats... Also, with both formats available for all movies it no longer matters that HD DVD is region free because all movies will be available.
That leaves the only real talking point being interactivity.
That being the case.. I would probably buy HD DVD... BUT I would likely never use the interactivity features, so the only reason for me to make that choice with all other things being equal is because it is a perceived value over Blu ray.
Now that Dreamworld has been analyzed... back here in reality, HD DVD is cheaper and the region-free helps counterbalance movies otherwise exclusive to Blu ray... so that is why HD DVD is in my home instead of Blu ray.
Splicer010 02-07-08, 09:22 PM Maybe because you quoted my reason for my choice instead of quoting the entire question...

You explicitly made the decision to quote only part of the OT question to suit your comments...[/QUOTE]
JBlacklow 02-07-08, 09:26 PM Nevermind. Since you've refused several times to clarify your point despite the logical statements being described, it's obvious that you're merely flamebaiting.
Looks like another deleted thread.
jugganutz 02-07-08, 09:26 PM hd-dvd because most of them don't having annoying ass previews at the beginning of the movie that i cannot skip! oh and interface seems faster and cleaner.

What the hell are you talking about???
I want to know what everyones preference would be...based on the scnario I gave...period...What is so difficult to understand and give an answer too???
Everyone needs to quit reading more into this than there is because otherwise I will ask for this thread to be deleted...All of these posts and i have gotten 3 responses based on the original post...Everyone else is suddenly on the defensive because they are (in my opinion) BD supporters (which there is nothing wrong with that) and they fear giving the honest answer...Just answer the question and go on with your lives...

Simple...You don't comprehend so don't reply...I answered your question now can you answer mine???
JBlacklow 02-07-08, 09:34 PM Since you change what the question is with every post, how can I?
Look, imagine that you have to describe this to a complete stranger. Can you break out your statements and explain them to me as such without insults?

A fine reply...I thankyou...
See guys...This poster has no problem with the question so why do most of the repliers have such an issue???

I've insulted noone...And the original post is being posed to complete strangers... I also have not changed one letter of the question...Quit posting just to incite...

Because your scenario deals with non reality and leaves out what maybe the best CE device there is today, the PS3. Enter the PS3 into your limited scenario and game over. There is no player than can offer as much at the price point it is.
Given the direction it seems you want this to go, I would say HD DVD.
The issue for me is if I already have what I want and need in an all in one solution which is reality, and no hypothetical can change reality.

The question specificly excludes the PS3 AND the 360 add-on...The topic is for stand alone players only...I do not want this to go in any one direction over another...That is for the respondants to decide...and you just answered so thankyou...
As far as your reality...Great!!! But why is it alright for you to use the word 'if' and when I do it is nonsense???
rlsmith 02-07-08, 09:51 PM Your hypothetical is quite useless. It changes things too much in an unrealistic direction.
The PS3 is an amazing piece of equipment. It accounts for 85% of the Blu-ray players world-wide.
You might as well as which of two racing cars will win the race if one of them is out of gas. Not very revealing.

The PS3 is a stand alone player. Last time I checked, it didn't need an add-on to play Blu-ray. Just because it plays games it's not a stand alone player ?  :p :D
John Ryder 02-07-08, 09:56 PM I don't trust Toshiba quality...my first DVD player was Toshiba and it was quite buggy and they have proven they can't make decent trouble free HD DVD players....for years the web has been littered with posts about Toshiba's crappy track record with DVD.
Blu on the other hand has pretty much been rock solid performance wise with the PS3 etc...not 100% perfect, but better than Toshiba IMO.
I'd go Blu for sure.

So now you're willing to count PS3's as SA's and admit to BD's miserable attach rate. Hey Warner!
user4avsforum 02-07-08, 09:57 PM I would buy whatever format has combos.
rboster 02-07-08, 09:59 PM Thanks
