First off, please forgive the archaic drawings. It's the best I can do while screwing off at work. :D I am getting ready to put some sofits together and have a few ideas I'd like to run by the gurus. My theater is 10' 7" wide. I am going to build sofits 18x12" all the way around the room. In the middle I am going to build a star ceiling that takes up the rest of the room, basically butting up against the sofits on all 4 sides. I am going to build it in 2 pieces framed out of 1x3's. So here's my thinking.

1) build the sofits and drywall the bottom and cut holes and wire for the can lights but leave the inner side alone for now. Stuff completely full of insulation.

2) build the star ceiling frames and cut out a bunch of 2" holes down the outside of the 1x3 framing which would butt up against the inside of the sofit filled with insulation. The the star ceiling tiles made out of 1" OC703 would then drop in the frames. I'm thinking this would benefit two fold. The 703 would cut down on the reverb and the bass would penetrate the 703 through the holes into the sofit filled with insulation.

3) Then below the star panel on the inside of the sofit left open I would add some wood paneling and crown molding which would hide the rope lighting. The only drawback I can see is if I have to take the star ceiling down for some reason I'd have to pull apart the panel and crown.

This gives a rough idea. The frames would look like a window, supporting the 703. The boxes are the 6 star designer controllers with 2 bundles in each controller. This would give just about 3.5 stars per square foot. The bottom pic is the 1x3 with holes.

OK fire away. :D
