To begin, I am by no means a proponent of the idea that animated content looks no better or at least not noticeably better in HD than on SD. I've argued the contrary in several threads. Every animated title I've seen has looked significantly better in HD than SD.

With that being said......

I watched Monsters Inc. with my kids tonight on SD, upconverted via my HTPC, but with no post processing done via ffdshow or reclock or anything - just the ATi drivers upconverting to 1360x768. It looked incredible. Sully's hair had excellent definition, there was texture everywhere - on the inanimate objects, Randall's skin, you name it. Colors were deep and vibrant, the list goes on. This movie looks great in SD. Other than HD audio, I can't imagine how they could improve this film so consumers would actually be able to discern the difference between the SD and HD copies.

Is Monsters Inc just one of those few pristine DVD transfers?

BTW, anyone notice the Nemo plug at the end? In retrospect, it's kind of funny they dropped Nemo in the film. It's at the very end when Mike and Sully return Boo to her room and Boo gives Sully a bunch of toys to hold, Nemo being one of them. :p

i think it will def. benefit from a hd release, just like cars and ratatouille did. also if you have the pixar shorts blu-ray you can get a taste of monsters inc in HD :)

This is one of Pixars films I would love to have in HD. Ratatouille was alright but it was no Monsters INC. or The Incredibles, these are the 2 I want on Blu-ray the Toy Stories would be awesome as well.

Considering Pixar just transfers directly from their Rendering engine and no actual celluloid film is needed the "Master" will always be pristine. It can be relelased 20 year from now and it will still look as fresh.

Agree, the SD (considering there are 2 full versions on one side) looks amazing upconverted but if you have ever seen the HD broadcast on ABC, you will see things you have never seen before.

And ABC was only 720p. I've seen a 1080p version from BBC and trust me it looks amazing. :)
