View Full Version : My 5070 is getting replaced...
Havelcek 02-08-08, 11:20 AM I purchased a Pio 5070HD from PlasmaConcepts last Christmas and it blew up this Christmas. The warranty company is finally getting around to replacing it and they are offering me a 5080HD because the 5070s are not being made. On face value this sounds great, but my problem is that the cost difference is now close to 1K when you add up the difference in the TV and the cost of the original extended warranty. Am I getting completely ripped off or is this how it works? Should I just shut up and take the new TV?
Ericthemidget 02-08-08, 11:22 AM Are they charging you for the new TV? If not, then the warranty is doing it's job. You can't expect to get money back unless that was in the original policy (kind of like Costco's old policy).

Take it. The 5080HD is a great panel and you'll love it.
Why not ask if you can transfer the extened warranty to the new set? I don't see a reason why they won't do that.

No there is no charge. The policy states replacement at their discretion with "like model or like quality". If neither is available then replacement of original purchase price.
Note this is Phillips.

I did ask that and it wasn't an option. It says "replacement results in fulfillment of the warranty" all over the contract.
RandyWalters 02-08-08, 11:42 AM Different aftermarket warranty companies or providers have different terms. The 5080HD is a much better set and even though it sells for less than what you paid for the 5070HD, you're basically getting a brand new excellent current model TV for whatever you paid for that warranty.
I've never heard of Phillips warranties, got links to their terms? How much did you pay for this warranty?

I paid 425 for a 5-year warranty. I only have a paper, I'm not aware of any online resources.
Havelcek 02-08-08, 11:51 AM This might be more helpful, its actually subrogated to Service Net, which I think is a more recognizable name for warranties.

It sounds like it may be a Warrantech Repairmaster warranty. I bought a 4-year RM EW for my older 2005 ($3,500) Plasma but i only paid a few hundred bucks for it. But still, $425 for a brand new Pioneer 5080HD is a steal. Yet another example of an EW paying off handsomely.
When you get the new 5080, you take some of the few thousand dollars you saved and buy another warranty for it for probably less than half of what you paid for the old one from MountAVision or ClevelandPlasma . . . . ;)

I completely agree...I'm frankly thrilled to be getting the new model. I just wanted to validate here that I was thinking it all through properly.

They are replacing your obsolete 5070 with the now obsolete 5080.
Sounds fair.

I know, but I haven't had the TV since 1/6/08 and I had to go to someone else's house to watch my beloved Giants in hi-def, so I'm not complaining at this point.

5080HD is a great set period :)
brentsg 02-08-08, 05:10 PM Enjoy your 5080. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one now if I needed another display.

Pay no mind to him. He just looks for any excuse to bash Pioneer at any level as it's pretty sad when you think about it. Sounds like you're getting a sweet deal with being upgraded to the CURRENT model available and a Kuro at that. Enjoy the new set.

Maxi, I'm not bashing Pioneer I am simply stating a fact. I even linked a thread from your hero Roman validating my comment.
Is there something inaccurate in my statement? I'm not suggesting he get a new plasma for an older unit, but I think the trade here is fair.
Do you have stock in Pioneer or do you work for them? Your paranoia with this company concerns me.

Odd comment. You cannot even purchase a 9G model, so you are just pissing in his cheerios.
It has beautiful PQ.

Bingo! You just said it yourself. Any extended warranty you purchase will only cover or replace "similar or like quality". Also they go by the CURRENT MARKET VALUE of your television. The 5070 is probably worth around $1500 given the fact that you only bought it over a year ago. The 5080HD is the comparable unit that they would replace it with. This is a perfect scenario on how they handled the exchange. I would enjoy! You get a better set with deeper blacks.

LMAO! Your reputation proceeds you dude. I have no stock in Pioneer and have no paranoia towards them at all but I do find them to be a very nice set as well as Samsung's and Panasonics as far as plasmas go.
:D
.... Should I just shut up and take the new TV?
yep! and don't buy any more of those overpriced 3rd party warranties...

Yea that's what my wife asked me, but our first one broke at 1 year + 1 week so I would have been bent over without the extended warranty.

Technically you're right...but the word "obsolete" is a tad harsh....dont ya think? I mean, rotary phones are obsolete. Word processors are obsolete. VHS is obsolete. A great plasma that just happens to have been recently discontinued is not even close to being obsolete. These current crop of sets from Pio will be anything but obsolete for many years to come.
Isnt your Panny then "obsolete"? Of course its not, its not a brand new model but its still damned good. See what I mean?
