DVE for Blu release on March 25, 2008

It's available for pre-order at Amazon

If this will be your first time using a calibration disk I would recommend Avia II...it is available now on dvd and sometime this year on Blu-ray/HD-DVD. I don't know if anyone is taking pre-orders though..

Go for Joe Kane's BD DVE.

There's a disc you can download for free in the calibration forum. You burn it on a regular DVD and play it in your BD player. It's 1080p source with grayscale and REC701 colors patterns. There's a corresponding version for HD-DVD. Except for testing REC701 colors, the SD calibration discs get you about the same results (grayscale and color) except for not having 720p or 1080p test patterns.

These are two links to what PooperScooper is talking about:

The second explains a couple interesting points in using the disc.

Thanks for all the replies. Have any of you guys tried the calibration patterns on Sony Pictures BDs? I pulled the one up on my free Ultraviolet BD which seemed to help with sharpness adjustments (and also told me my, non adjustable, overscan is way out of whack). But I really didn't know what to use to set the contrast. Also, I couldn't really get the pluge pattern to do what I would normally expect from it when setting brightness. There was another pattern with a sequence of vertically shaded bars going from black to white (left to right) but I really wasn't sure what to do with it.

After I was done, blacks had almost no detail so I had to brighten it up using the movie itself. BTW, Ultraviolet is a pretty good movie to fine tune the settings for my plasma display. There are vivid colors and many dark black costumes of leather and other textures with plenty of detail.

Does anyone know if the quality of the Blu-ray disk is going to be any better than the HD-DVD version? The reviews on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IHYY3Y******pd_cp_d_1?pf_rd_p=316286001&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000V6LST0&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0VZ8SXDQKDY78REY74PS) have been very poor. Bascially, the HD side contains no guideance, just some test patterns. I also know, from experience, that the organization of the original DVD version, while functional, was far from optimal. Has this been improved?

Are there any projections on the Avia disk, other than "sometime this year?" It doesn't seem to be mentioned on their web site.
