View Full Version : Panasonic 42PX75U for a first HDTV
My parents are looking to finally take the leap into HD (finally). Cost is probably the most important thing for them. They can get the Panasonic 42PX75U for about $900. It looks like a pretty good tv for the price. Are there any others that people here can think of that they should also consider or is this a good starter set?
It is for their bedroom and they will be going from SD to HD so the PQ jump should be significant regardless of what set they get. Again price is important so I'm not looking at 42" sets that are gong for 1100-1300.
If anyone has any other recommendations please let me know. Thanks.
joemama127 02-09-08, 10:55 AM I feel that would make a great intro to HD set also....just keep in mind that even though space is limited in a bedroom, often the viewing distance will be further than it would be in a normal livingroom/den setting.
creemail 02-09-08, 10:59 AM This is a great first HD set. I have my 42PX60U (last generation set) and it looks great on HD material. They should like this set very much.

Will you be setting it up for them? Will it be connected to a roof antenna, or do they have cable or satellite?
One thing about the older folks (and some younger wimmin) is that they can't seem to grasp the concept of the ASPECT key on the remote, so maybe start talking to them about it now and how they should try to keep the screen filled and avoid black bars as much as possible, and keep checking with them after they get the TV. If they will be using a cable or satellite STB you can probably set it up so the TV will automatically go into JUST mode whenever they tune to a non-HD channel. I have my GF's cable DVR set up to do this (basically have it set to output 480i and 1080i).
badmeng 02-09-08, 03:38 PM Yes, this is a great choice for your parents!
redwolf4k 02-09-08, 04:21 PM The picture quality of that TV is amazing, nothing else comes even close for $900.
manofice 02-09-08, 08:29 PM I have this tv, it's great! Should I do a burn in on this tv though ? If so where can I get a burn in image?
SLAPS808 02-10-08, 01:05 AM i also have a 42px75u. i paid under 9 for it. best bang for the buck imo.
great TV for them! I have the 50" version and love it! although, later on, I may upgrade to something else, but for the money, definitely a great TV!
K9feces 02-10-08, 09:25 AM The TV's are great, especially since the price is on par with brands like Westinghouse, Olevia, Vizio etc.
gobluesecurity 02-10-08, 11:37 AM I was thinking of getting this one or the PX77u, but I read a review that stated there were problems with the set when trying to view video from a 1080p source. I'm really torn, because I have a PS3 and I keep reading about power supply issues with the PZ700U series.
merrymaid520 02-11-08, 07:56 PM Where are you guys finding those great deals on the 42" panny?
I looked at the sponsor prices above and they are all at $1100 or so for it?
Thanks,
Brandon

For over $900?:) Plenty of sets do;):)
I would look at two sets, obviously, due to the pricerange of them...the Panasonic set mentioned by the OP and the Samsung 4254 or 4264 (get 4264 if you can find one).
I don't think these sets are worst, but "better" than the 1080P sets w/exception that the 1080P sets do HD Blue Ray stuff a bit better;). But really, I've not seen this set in my home, though in store it looks very good and should, for standard DVD and SD channels on TV, be much better than 1080P sets. It's also a relatively bright set which is good.
I would rate the sets like this:
720P set mentioned=best for SD/HD content on TV. Close enough to the 700U and better than the 77U for Blue Ray/HD-DVD
1080P sets: 77U=Good for people that live on the beach with a window filled home and watch their set with tons of lights on at night.
700U Way better than the 77U. Although I returned this set, it is much more than garbage as I have spoken of it and other Panasonics in the past. After seeing a Kuro, yes, it looks like garbage, but when comparing it to "any" other set on the market, these Panny Plasmas can give some serious $$$ LCDs a run for the money and beat out most of them IMHO...so assessing the set more on the vast array of choices you have to pick from, the Panasonic has an exceptional picture.
Also, you may want to wait to buy that set as the 2008 sets are coming and that one may get blown out/clearanced, though it may be already.
Cheers!
