View Full Version : Did your blu-ray software past the "wife" test
Nelson9937955 02-09-08, 01:33 PM Meaning, did the wife notice a big difference in PQ with high def dvd over Sd-DVD? Mine didn't. And I will be honest, i wasn't "wowed" either. I have a 65 inch Mitsubishi 1080p DLP HDTV and use an Oppo 780H for upconverting.
I bought into the hype and bought a PS3 since I game as well. People said, it would be "night and day difference" PQ wise. I don't agree at all with that. It's better PQ wise, don't get me wrong but just marginally. I wanted too be blown away but I just wasn't.
Maybe my Oppo does such a good job that the jump was not a big jump. Maybe with someone with a crapo dvd player upgrading, the diff could be huge, but not for me.
I will keep the Ps3 for games but don't plan on getting any blu-ray disks till the price goes way down to dvd prices to where it is worth it. Just my honest opinion
My wife notice the difference in AQ. When you sit far from the tv you wont see much difference
Chris Rein 02-09-08, 01:46 PM Settings correct?
1080p set correctly by PS3?
Re-Calibrate TV if on new input?
HDMI?
What discs did you try?
Huge difference IMHO. You should have seen that right out the gate on Spider-Man 3 with the Sony Pictures logo (if you got the 40GB version and actually watched it!).
Give Blockbuster a try and rent some discs. Actually, rent a blu ray disc that you own on standard DVD. Then do an A/B comparison. You should definitely see a difference. Right now, you're going off of memory.

I do have HDMI and did use Avia to setup new input. I saw the difference, no doubt about it. Blu-ray and HD-dvd look better. And yeah logos and text look awesome but I am just talking about actual movie video. People where saying it was "night and day" difference. (people here at forum and BB salesman). I guess I went in expecting too much??? I dont have a good audio setup so I cant speak on that, i am just going on video.
With upconverting, i can get a picture just as sharp as hdmovie net ot HBOHD. My wife is like, looks the same to me. She doesnt have a trained eye, but to me thats the test. If the wife notices a big jump, lol
Movies i have tried were Spiderman, Robocop, Training Day(that was the best i had seen). I even tried some with HD-Dvd. I watched Bourne Identity and 300. Kink Kong also was nice. But as good as Kong and Training day were, nothing that made me go OMG HOLY**** which is what I anticipated going in when I talked my wife into letting me get PS3.
I had the same thing with my PS3 and 1080i HD TV. We watched Pirates of the Carribean III and she didn't see any real difference. I definitely did though, so I guess that is what counts.
Did just watch the NIN Blu Ray Concert Video and whoooooah did it look good. If your wife likes any bands that have a blu-ray DVD out, maybe that route will work. The Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds disc is supposedly out of this world for both video and audio.

No, my wife didn't notice a difference, but she wouldn't care anyway so...
As far far as your thoughts; to each his own. I see a night and day difference. Perhaps its your TV that isn't showing off the full potential, who knows?
Wife loved it.
She never saw Lost, she we started with season 1.
When we hit 3 which was on BD, she was like "man, what happend?"
My wife sees the difference, but does not appreciate the difference. It if were up to her we would still be buying DVDs. I think she longs for the good old days when one DVD player would play everything. We currently need three players.
Cryptopsy 02-09-08, 03:17 PM I am also one of the few that the gf see AND appreciate the diffrence between DVD and BR. It is great i have the GO to buy almost any movie i want :)

Similar here, although my wife is fine with 4:3 SD On Demand and VHS. If she likes the content, that's all that matters to her. At least she supports my obsession.
schro5150 02-09-08, 03:24 PM The girlfriend loves it.
The wife, not so much.

LOL
yellowlt4 02-09-08, 03:26 PM Yes, my wife noticed as much as I did. She actually loves the difference and prefers not to much SD unless we have too.

It took three things for my wife to acknowledge and appreciate the difference between SD, Comcast HD, and Blu-Ray.
1) Football. HD is much better for football.
2) Watching Harry Potter in HD on Comcast is better than watching the SD DVDs upscaled. And, then watching the HP movies on Blu-Ray.
3) Planet Earth.
Now, she's as hooked as I am. Or, at least she is tolerant of not renting a movie in SD DVD because it's available on Blu-Ray, too. Which is almost as good. :D
wormraper 02-09-08, 03:44 PM *sigh, another
"I can't see any real diff between DVD and HD" thread. :(
they're almost as common as "why are there black bars" and "what movie do you want to come out on Blu/HD DVD?" threads.

The only thing worse than the "I can't see da difference" thread is basing it off of one movie, or not even caring enough to tell what movie(s) it was based on.
Well, some of us actually care about our significant others. Go put your wife-beater back on and get 'er done!
lol

Jiffylush 02-09-08, 05:15 PM My wife notices the difference but doesn't really care about it, that is until she found a box under the tree with the HP set on Blu-ray.
Now she can't get enough.
She is big on the AQ as well.
And Planet Earth, and all the kids movies (cars, rat.., chicken little, etc).
Hm, maybe now that I think about it, she is really into it, now if only I could get her to try some more Guitar Hero...
josephmckinney 02-09-08, 06:55 PM My wife just keeps saying she doesn't get it. Oh well, she lets me get the toys anyway. God love her!!
Davinleeds 02-09-08, 06:59 PM Mine is satisfied with SD but asks me why my tv (digital broadcast)is so much clearer. I have a HD projector and it's not that important to her. I can see (and son) the difference--it may be the ying/yang difference as the thread title implies.
Yup, for both audio and video.
In fact, during the middle of watching Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang on Blu-Ray, she exclaimed "This is so much better than going to the movies!".

I couldn't agree more. I hope SOMETHING interesting happens soon so those of us with too much online time on our hands have something worthwhile to write about.
By the way, for all of you who "bought into the hype" and are less than "wowed" with the results: good old 480i is still readily available, so feel free to go back to that which you were most comfortable with. Return your high-cost, high definition toys, and spend the money on a pair of diamond earrings for your significant other. Your efforts are sure to be rewarded with passionate lovemaking, and you'll both be happy.
Davinleeds 02-09-08, 07:52 PM worst thread evar
No. It's a serious discussion about personal interaction concerning the value of 480i/p verses 720p/1080i/p. And if you can justify the expense. And get away with it.----Continually.

Here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=988771) you go ;)
Mine noticed right away.
Once I did a A/B on superman returns and she never looked back.
These days she isn't even interested in SD-DVD(with the exception of collecting but not watching the disney platinum's)
She defnintely sees the diference. She tries not to watch anything SD not even TV. During football and baseball season she'll seek out a HDTV
lgans316 02-09-08, 10:26 PM Same here but she is still content with watching Friends on my laptop.
Nelson9937955 02-09-08, 10:31 PM I am glad I am not alone on this. I figured their would be some fanboys that would come out and bash the topic and OP but I am also relieved to here alot of others have significant others that also "failed" the test.
Any others have wives that have said sarcastic things to get under your skin after you spent so much money? lol. Here are some I have been told.
"WOW, this DEFINATELY looks 6 TIMES better than a regular DVD"
"For the 35 bucks you wasted on this DVD we already have, you could have bought me a ________
Kingcarcas 02-09-08, 11:03 PM Hmm.........since it seems you've tried several movies and have it setup correctly the only question left is, does the person in question have good vision?
