For just slight over that price I'd take the Samsung 4264.

Any other suggestions..?

I would also try the Panasonic 42PX75U as well...

I see the Samsungs as having the best PQ. They offer the best combination of natural colors, details, and contrast of any flat panels on the market. If you want a life like 3d viewing experience then I suggest you go with the 4264

I picked up the Samsung 4254 because my wife and I both preferred the aesthetic. IMO, you cant go wrong with either of the ~1K$ Sammys.

sammy 4254, or
panny 42px75u

I used to have the LG 42pc5d and took it back for the samsung and am glad I did. the picture, IMO, is much better on the samsung. Paid a benjamin and a half less than you are looking to spend. No regrets and only tv I would get instead of the 4254 is Panny (but like the samsung picture quality better overall) because of its known reliability or the Pioneer 4280 (but didn;t want to spend almost double for what I paid for the Samsung).

If the PQ is the same in your eyes between the Sammy and Panny choose the Panasonic, the brand has strong history of great reliability. ( better than Samsung in general).

And your evidence for this assertion?

He's absolutely right, the 4254's have known issues with judder and flicker (depending on what firmware you end up with). Samung in general is not very reliable. I say that having returned many of their sets. And the evidence is in these forums.

And the evidence is this forum including your post. Thanks for sharing your in-depth analysis

Perfect timing on this thread!
In the market for a under $1000 plasma.
My room mate has the 50' version of the sammy and it's wonderful. I have a sammy LCD computer monitor and love it, but will go compare the two before blindly ignoring the panny.

Thanks

Go with the panny. The samsung is nice, but I see more banding in them.

One of my friends picked up a 75u for less than 900. Another one of my friends is going to get the same deal.
Get em b4 they're gone.

If you can wait another 3 weeks the 42PX80U would be the best solution.

Chris do you mind explaining this. I am looking for a tv not for gammimg but for comcast HD and Blue ray. The 4080 is top of my list but if I can save a few buck on it for something as good I would rather do that.

Why not go to the store and view them side-by-side? If you do I'm betting you buy the Samsung

I have owned both the Samsung 4254 and the Panasonic 42px75 and I can say without a doubt that the Panasonic has the better picture. Also I had to return the Sammy due to a number of defects (including Judder, massive image retention and true burn-in (After 5 hours of the scrolling bars it was still there) The panasonic also has much better shadow detail when viewed in a bright room (the Sammy liked to crush blacks, the Panny doesn't)

The Samsung may look better in the store, but the Panasonic will look better in your home.

And if you need proof of how bad the Samsung quality control is, got take a look at the LCD boards, all of their units have had a major flaw so far, LCD or Plasma. The big flaw that they have with Plasma right now is the unusually high amount of IR that they display, which can lead to burn-in for some. (like me after spending 25 minutes in the menu inputing the break-in settings on all my inputs) I never did a break-in with my Panasonic and I have no problems with IR.

I plan on doing that. One thing I will take into account is antiglare. I am one of those that simply hates a glossy reflective service

Ive seen the Hitachi 42 at 999 before, and I think Ive seen the panny 75 for 1099. Either would be great.

I have the LG 42PB4D and I love it. Two co-workers have the 50PB4D and they love theirs as well. The unit have a better fuller look to the frame, dual speakers side and bottom and a built-in DVR for OTA reception with built in TV Guide.

I paid $1299 this past summer from a local dealer that included white glove delivery and a 2 year in home warranty with pick up and delivery.

Thanks
