View Full Version : Lawsuit against Samsung and Sony???
Ryan Peddle 02-10-08, 04:36 PM I just came back from my local boutique HDM dealer and we had our usual chat about the ups and downs of HDM. We talked about how the BDA should have ended this thing already but their CE companies cant get a player built properly...stupid profiles, and how Toshiba couldn't advertise or market HDDVD if their life depended on it.
But he did bring up one thing that I find very interesting. He mentioned that there are 2 class action lawsuits going on right now against Samsung and Sony, individually, but over the same thing. Basically the lawsuits are revolving around the fact that there are many players out there (mainly first gen from sony and all gens from Samsung) that will not play many of the BD discs that are being released.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Telexen 02-10-08, 04:40 PM From what I understand, version changes to the Bluray spec leave older players that aren't capable of firmware upgrades won't be able to play newer discs.
I've also heard that ultimately the only player on the market right now that will survive all version upgrades is the PS3.
I don't know this for sure though, as I'm not an owner of any HDM format.
phansson 02-10-08, 04:43 PM All the information you need to know is right here. It's against Samsung over their crappy players.

Mods, should probably change this to Lawsuit against Samsung BDP 1200 and move to Blu Ray player forum.

And that is supposedly the winning format. Yikes!
anotheraviator 02-10-08, 04:45 PM This is where the profile/BD+ fiasco begins to bite the BDA in the ass. Just when consumers are getting comfortable in spending their money on stand alone players comes the:
Oh, your player is version 1.0 -- it can't use features of 1.1 or 2.0 discs.
Oh, your player is 1.1 -- it can play 1.0 and 1.1 but not 2.0
Oh, you don't have a PS3 -- you can't play anything 2.0
Give it a few angry consumers and the media will be all over this like a fat kid on a cupcake.

EDIT: Disregard. Everyone else beat me to it.

What purpose does this thread provide? Most of the replies are I heard from this guy who heard from another guy. There are threads for all specific players. Read through them and you will find actual people reporting issues they have with the Samsung 1200 and any other of the machines currently out there. Thanks for the link phansson. I fully understand folks deciding to go after a CE company that is molasses slow to get updates in a timely manner that allow for the machine to perform what people paid for.. I have a first gen S1 from Sony I bought a year after I bought a PS3. The PS3 gets used more now a days for looking at pictures and streaming my family videos and music from my home server. The S1 plays everything so far I have thrown at it. Most companies are being fairly proactive about getting updates to the folks so please provide factual information because anecdotal reports usually end up with a thread going out of control and having it closed. Let's move on. Buy what makes you happy, but don't purposely or inadvertently start flame baits. I also support HD DVD and will continue to enjoy it as long as both or one ends up being the only game in town
anotheraviator 02-10-08, 05:08 PM All because BD was rushed to market as a "beta" product.

I believe it provides answers to the OP's question. That is all.

Many first time buyers stumble upon AVS as a way to research purchases. It's important that they know that if they are purchasing something that is not a PS3, there is a potential for issues down the road as more final spec discs are released.
Right now Samsung is the cheapest stand alone player where I live. It's important consumers don't buy them without knowing about the class action law suit because they can't play all Bluray discs.
30XS955 User 02-10-08, 05:13 PM I've never bought a Samsung product that didn't have major functional and design flaws. However in this case I believe the customer knew what they were getting into.
