Im new to watching blue ray and I like love it. Its very different then what we are used to watching. Im still getting used to it though. Sometimes it feels so real but in the sense that it feels like Im watching a set, kind of weird feeling. But it also feels like Im watching those old British tv shows, am I the only one that gets that kind of sense watching it?

Thanks

your not alone:D I have been watching hd dvd's and blu rays and i get the same sort of feeling, kinda like someone acting out the movie in front of you. I was watching the new harry potter last night on my 110" screen and i swear it looked like they could jump out of the screen into my living room, thats one of the reasons i love hd media.

Just out of curiosity, what TV do you have?

not for me. I've been viewing high def content for think 4 years now so bluray and hd dvd don't really "wow" me like that and make me think it is real since reality and hd are still a fair ways off...that isn't to say these two formats don't impress me and if I had my way dvd would die a quick death (I have nothing against dvd but its time is done for me) and everything would be released in hd.:)

I'm a BIG proponent of HD. Maybe it's the 120" screen I need to fill :D

Rob, don't you find a noticeable differance betwwen HDM and OTA/Cable/Satellite HD though?

One big reason I got into HDM recently was that once I upgraded my TV from an older rear-projection to a 1080p LCD the OTA/Satellite picture was less than spectacular.

I have to say, no my cable HD (local fibre) was just as good as any HD or Blu that I watched on my set. That is, until I watched Celine Dion's new Bluray. Wow. First time I was ever happy with the look of High-Def discs.

Now mind you it is a 720p Maxent mx50x3, but still, that disc was exceptional. First time I felt Blu or HD looked better than my cable feed.

Oh yeah, and I just got a 60" 120hz display as well. Watching Planet Earth feels like I'm watching animals through a crystal clear window :)

That's why I was curious. I wanted to clarify if he was talking about BD in general, or BD with the auto motion plus or whatever it's called.

Many people are reporting this on 120hz displays. Many people don't like it beyond the show room that sold them on it either.

Fry's showroom wasn't very good but I had the sales associate hook up a 24p Panasonic blu-ray player to my set, the 60" Sony 60A3000 (scored for under $1500). I tinkered with it while half the department was watching the superbowl. Simply amazing for my tastes :D Last night my better half's cousin came over and her mom said, "show them that motion thingy".. I switched it on and his jaw literally dropped, he couldn't stop talking about it. Best reaction yet.

I had checked them out before, first experience was at CC with and HD DVD player and Transformers on 52" Samsung LCD. So buttery smooth but the price was out of my comfort level at the time.

I loved the dramatic difference from DVD to Blu-ray long before I had watched a 120hz set. The 120hz however just makes it that much sweet, even DVD's are better. If there is material that doesn't look how you want it though you can disable it with a couple button pushes.

In the beginning I was jaw-dropped for about two months then I became use to it. My mother still has moments of aw. There is a small difference from Cable HD than HDM in my opinion. Glad you enjoy!

Sound like you have motionfilter on. If thats the case you should turn it off, because it takes away how the movie was meant to be watched.

That's your display, I'm afraid. On a proper 1080p display any of my HD-DVDs look light years better than any of those HD-Lite crap cable and sat corporations are feeding us...

Yeah, when I saw he has a Sony XBR4 I immediatly thought 'it's the motion stuff' - which is kinda cool but unfortunately it's way too obtrusive because it's switching on and off all the time.

I have HD DVD and Blu Ray as well as two Yagi antennae on my roof. Some of the OTA is very good indeed on my 1080p display. I do not have any HD feed from satellite or cable. My DirecTV is SD only.

So are you talking about true OTA with digital feeds by your local stations or are you using OTA to describe locals via cable or satellite? My friend has DirecTV HD Lite on his recently purchased plasma display. I encouraged him to try an antenna, which he was able to stuff in his condo attic. He was as wowed by the difference from DirecTV to OTA as he was with HD DVD (he purchased my XA1 from me.)

Come on now HT Nut, you're not unloading some of that HD DVD gear to a "friend" are you? ;)

Friends just don't sell there HD DVD stuff to their friends! :)

Try watching a Blu-ray movie with Cinemotion set to Auto 2, or the Motion Enhancer set to Off.

Pretty much looks like the movie was shot on video rather than film. It's almost 3D-ish, right?

Turn off the 120hz option. It looks like crap, period. Sharp as hell, sure, but it looks like a soap opera.

24 frames per second for the win.

I disagree. It depends on the material. It looks TERRIBLE for live action 24p material (it looks sped up and jittery) but it makes CG look incredible. Watching Ratatouille or Cars with motion enhancement on is like looking into a moving diorama. It also looks amazing for sports with lots of motion, like basketball.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm nitpicking, but this isn't a 120Hz thing. 120Hz is not a bad thing; on the contrary, it's good. The auto motion plus is a separate feature on these sets and can be disabled. Even when disabled, the refresh rate of the set will still be 120Hz, and some sets can use this to show each frame 5 times for the truest representation of filmed material.

While I usually want people to be properly educated about this stuff, there are times when mis-education isn't so bad. For example, I don't mind if some people think they need to buy an HDTV due to the analog switchover. If that spurs more HDTV sales (and potentially more BD sales), that may be good.

This is another case. If people see this demo and are wowed by it enough to get the TV and the BD player, should I be concerned if they think it's the media that's responsible rather than the TV? Am I going to step in and say, "no, you can use that with DVD. You don't need to buy a Blu-ray Disc player to see that smooth motion." I think I'd just keep my mouth shut and let the player base grow. :)
