View Full Version : X-10 light switches needed
rick12667 02-11-08, 11:49 AM Hello,
Looking for a GOOD quality dimmer light switch that will work with X-10. I am looking for both a single pole and a three way switch. Any help would be great.
Thanks Rick

chinadog 02-11-08, 12:01 PM Smartome.com is where I got mine. Also, check out automatedoutlet.com for better pricing.

rick12667 02-11-08, 12:16 PM Do you have a model number?
Often X10 devices/components can be found for little $$ on eBay.

chinadog 02-11-08, 01:32 PM Axel, true, but you get what you pay for from a quality standpoint. People complain about cheap X10 switches being unreliable.
Rick, I didn't do three ways. What I meant was "I bought all my X10 dimmers there". I bought mine two years ago, they don't carry the ones I bought any longer. They're pushing Insteon now.

rick12667 02-11-08, 01:35 PM I agree, I purchased some cheap ones and they are total junk. Many years ago I purchased a high end one in my other theater and it worked great but I have not idea anymore which one it was.

I was not aware that there were different quality tiers for X10 devices. I was under the impression that X10 were inherently unreliable and 'cheap'.
If one wanted something 'better', those Insteons or alike would be a much better, but also pricier choice. I definitely would not recommend X10 for any 'mission critical' applications.
That said, I have been using X10 for a while. I went that route because only X10 offered an IR interface back then, which was and still is crucial for me. It also offers a simple phone interface, which allows me to turn devices remotely on/off from my cell phone.

Understood. I have a bunch of X10 stuff in my house and a HAI Omnipro II to control things. I have bought most of my stuff via Smarthome, although I'm debating going Insteon on a few more applications. My theater is X10 and it's been working like a charm. I think the key is to ensure everything is one the same circuit in this case, makes it more reliable. One advantage for Insteon is that the devices actually pass commands between each other like a repeater. X10 signals tend to degregrade over distances, which is why you need boosters. Probably one reason people think they're unreliable.

GPowers 02-15-08, 03:06 PM I have purchased for the cheapest x10 switches, to leviton, and the high end PCS. The only x10 switch that is close to 100% is the PCS SceneMaster LM4. But is is not cheap.
Forget the cheap ones they are just junk. PCS SceneMaster is quality and it works, has tons of options, can control four separate loads, and will to 3way, 4way etc. cost 4 years ago was arounf $300 for four loads. Problem is the company, PCS, has moved on the UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) products.
Andy238 02-17-08, 08:11 PM Ditto the thoughts on the LM4. I'm on my second one in my second house. I lucked out on e-bay and found one a ways back for the new theater. It also came with an LM1 which is the same but only one channel.
I'm totally bummed the PCS dropped their SceneMaster line. I just love their 6 and 8 button transmitters, the SMST6 & 8. I'd kill to get my hands on another one of those.
