Some related facts,

GOM is an abbreviation of the company name that makes the fabric. Guilford of Maine.

One of their fabrics (they have many) resembles a high quality burlap. If you have ever seen an office cubicle that was covered with fabric there is a good chance it was a GOM fabric.

Many colors and styles available, just go to their web site to order free samples. Not all are suitable for covering speakers but most if not all can be used for acoustical treatments and wall coverings.

GOM comes in rolls 66 inches wide.

Burlap does not have the same upscale look that the GOM fabrics have. There is also a wider selection of fabrics to choose from GOM lines.

GOM fabrics do cost more but they are worth it when you see the finished product.

Here is the best way to say it.

Burlap looks like something that would make a nice pillow, GOM looks like something you would make a nice acoustic panel. :)

Not to hijack the thread but do you have to paint the sheetrock before putting on the GOM fabric? If not I'm assuming the drywall won't show through the fabric.

Maybe, depending on the choice of color and fabric style. However most of us are putting fabric over acoustical treatments that hide the drywall.

A uniform color behind the fabric is key, alternating light/dark areas may be visible through the fabric. Very noticeable with flash photos.

Don't forget about Fire Retardant. The GOM is usually labeled with an FR for Fire Retardant. That's pretty important when considering what to cover your walls with. I think there are treatments that one can apply to burlap but keep that in mind.
