View Full Version : The Palace Theatre complete!
Just a few pics of my theatre that we have been enjoying for the last few months! I had a contractor do most of the construction work and I did all the equipment wiring, hookup, tweaking, calibration etc. for the basement. My wife did all the interior design work. The theatre is about 14.5' by 29.5 feet with ceiling height just under 8 feet. The basement project took about 9 months to complete.(1 contractor and subs working part time after the first 4 months).
The theatre was to set in the 1920's, so all fixtures/colours etc.are from that era. Walking down the stairs into the basement, we placed slate flooring down as well as made fake 'cement blocks"(1/2 plywood cut 12" by 18" and spaced 1" apart) and put up exterior lighting. I have a ceiling speaker that plays a recording of "New York downtown traffic" so that is sounds like outside. You then walk into the "lobby" that has a walk in ticket booth and snack bar and washroom.
The theatre has seating for 12 on a multi tiered riser (great viewing angle without ceiling height issues) and has been treated with acoustic treatments and sound proofing building techniques. The equipment is in the furnace room beside the theatre as to not let equipment noise in the theatre. The basement features 3 zones of multi-room audio(12 more upstairs) along with the theatre.
We are wishing the writer's strike was not on, but we have been watching movies on the weekends. I hope you enjoy it!

looks great. More pics please including the lobby.
what projector are you using?
tradewinds 02-11-08, 11:03 PM Very nice theater room, but you must get a larger screen, maybe 2.35 would go well there.

v1rtu0s1ty 02-11-08, 11:10 PM Great job! I like your theater. I also like the texture of your ceiling. How did you do it? Can you please take a closeup pic of the ceiling if it's ok?
I am using an Epson Pro1080UB that has been ISF calibrated to perfection! I had the original Pro1080 and I just upgraded 2 weeks ago to the UB. Much better blacks and depth of picture. I forgot to mention that the chairs are from Front Row and are the Casablanca model. I attached more pics of the lobby area!
The ceiling is just an "orange peel" ceiling that was painted with Ben Moore Ultra Matte(I think that is what it is called) paint in black. The lobby ceiling is speckled copper rust paint that was rolled on! I spray painted the speaker and pot light grills to match.
I watch more tv and concert videos than movies, so I pondered the 2:35, but most of my viewing would be in 16:9 anyway. The screen does not look small in person, but I noticed the camera shots make it look small as well. I wanted to give the speakers room away from the corners as well so that they would boom in the bass too much. I have just under 3' for each side for the speakers to be placed in and then my screen was chosen for the largest size to fit the remaining space.
Tradewinds-thanks for posting my pics! I have added more if you you don't mind working your magic again!
tradewinds 02-11-08, 11:42 PM Got it.

Tom Bley 02-12-08, 08:36 AM Awesome theater! I like the tall baseboard. What was the height of the baseboard you went with? Looks very bold. I also have that girl with the tray and have Henri the butler as well. Very elegant, nice job!

chinadog 02-12-08, 08:46 AM Excellent job. Love the old style look to it. Do you have any construction pictures?

BIGmouthinDC 02-12-08, 08:53 AM Fantastic space. Curious, What percentage of new visitors feel compelled to ring the bell on the ticket booth counter?
Also if you haven't seen Art S's mannequin in his ticket booth you might want to check it out. It's something that would look great in your elegant space.

whiskey alpha 02-12-08, 10:07 AM Beautiful. Great colors, great design, great details. Love the ticket booth
Thanks for the positive responses and thanks again tradewinds for properly displaying them!
I would say about 100% of people use the ringer on the ticket booth! If their are kids involved, again 100% go into the ticket booth and "sell us" tickets for the show. One time we had 2 kids and 2 adults over to watch Polar Express in December, the one kid clutched his ticket the whole movie and kept checking it was still with him! (The dad put $5.00 in one of my chocolate bar bins when I was not looking to pay for the families snacks!).
The pay phone is also a hit. We give people change to put in the phone and listen to it fall in!
We were planning on making the mannequin(my wife is an artist and has a book on how to make "doll' from the maker of all the Theo Kalomirakis lobby mannequins), but people love going into it and hand out tickets so we are leaving it open for now!
The baseboard is 6" by 1" planks with trim added on top and on the bottom side. We used the same planks with different trim piece on the bottom and nothing above in the "outside" area.
I have lots of pictures when we were building. Let me know what you want to see and I can maybe fetch a picture.
Thanks!
Anthony*gw 02-12-08, 12:58 PM Wow, Looks really really good lal..... congrats.

Love the theater....very nice job.
jmktopgun 02-12-08, 01:55 PM Very elegant theater. Well done.
Texas Aggie 02-12-08, 02:26 PM I used to have the same exact speaker array....VERY nice and very warm sound.
congrats!
Driving_Hamster 02-12-08, 08:46 PM Excellent job indeed. That ticket booth is spectacular. I also really dig the metal trash can and "cement block" feel outside.
PS: I used to have that pay phone/bank when I was younger. The darn thing broke on me and we couldn't get the money out! Not until we did some minor surgery on it anyway .
You should be proud of your HT. Makes me jealous!
Thanks again for all the positive responses! It was a lot of work but worth it.(Now I just have to pay for it!)
Glad you like the garbage can-if you look close to the right of the can, there is even a rubber rat beside the can that my wife decided to put there after cleaning up decorations from Halloween! It has surprised a few people there!
Alan Gouger 02-12-08, 10:40 PM Yes very nice. I like the colors as well. That darn little Epson really does throw one heck of a picture. Looks like you are all set for a while. Enjoy!!
