I saw this in the theater its definitely a good rent, but as far as a bye wait for a bogo or something, If youre thinking its going ot be like the departed you will be dissapointed, the story and characters just didnt seem to work for some reason.

yeah I've heard this movie really suffers from the writing. I'll at least give it a rent though.

There's some great moments in this movie. As mentioned in the reviews, the bulk of the likability comes from the relationship between the siblings and their father (oh yeah, and the first 5 minutes ;)). There are some great, tense scenes scattered throughout such as a tour of a coke making facility and one of the most emotionally involved car chase scenes I've ever seen. However, the filler surrounding this core is really trite and the mafia caricatures are as flat as they can possibly be conceived. Still, I left feeling like I was really engaged and entertained. Not as great as it could have been, but good enough for me to pick up later today.

Just watched this last night on SD DVD...rented the movie from Blockbuster. Love Robert Duvall and Mark Wahlberg in movies however they could not even save this one for me. The movie was ok...second half was definitely much better than the first half. I am one who likes to watch movies over and over again. I will not be watching this movie again....only my opinion. Others may think this movie is great...who knows.

Got this from Netflix (shocker) and have to say that it was a good rental. Not the best story but the cast really holds the movie together.

I think it this one had the ability to be better even though it was better than I expected. The writing was what needed inprovement. Good rental though.

I think it's watching if only for the performances. Joaquin Phoenix is one of the best and most underrated actors working right now, imo, and he's great here.

There were some parts of the movie I couldn't buy into completely, though. Without spoiling anything, Phoenix's story arc was a little too neat for me and I certainly wasn't convinced of it. Also, however gorgeous Eva Mendez is, her character serves absolutely NO purpose here.

Glad I was able to rent this one as the upcoming releases in March will have me quite occupied.

This movie was very very good IMHO. I very much enjoyed it and I recommend checking this one out at least through a rental. The setting is mostly at night or in dimly lit rooms so don't expect lots of eye candy. The sound was good enough but this is more story than action. Give it a try! Phoenix was quite good in his role.

For me this 1 is a rental only. Yeah the Eva scene rocked. But for the most part, the movie was not all the great. A decent rental tho.

The movie was ok. It was good into the middle act then just went south from there. The PQ is pretty good, a little soft but that was the way they shot it.

This was a rental for me. The movie was ok, but not anything special.

I really enjoyed this movie. The car chase was great, their were some very suspenseful moments, and I felt a genuine connection between Phoenix and Wahlberg, one of the best depictions of brothers i have ever seen.

He's one of the few reasons I'm considering renting this one, but Whalberg is keeping me away so far.

i really felt this movie either suffered from poor direction and/or a poor script, and the actors (despite how much i like all of them) could not save it for me. Although i enjoyed some parts (the car chase) and the unraveling of things at the end.. i wish i would have rented first.

Definitely a good rental, but definitely only worth a one time viewing. All the actors were amazing, however, I agree with many of you here, the script is really weak. Also the character building of the bad guys wasn't done well - just didn't get the sense that they were ruthless badasses.

Otherwise, the BD is nicely polished i.e. great extras all in hi-def, great AQ, slick menus, etc. Although I hated that they used a really warm filter in so many scenes ...looked horribly yellow.

Rented this from Blockbuster. Aside from Eva Mendes scene there is really nothing extraordinary about this movie. The main actors just kinda walk through the lines and the story takes a completely unbelievable turn. The ending was really stupid. I was surprised how lame Robert Duvall was. Normally he is incredible.

Pass this one and watch "Gone Baby Gone" instead.

is there another thread for this film in the bluray section?

I just watched it today, and it was a stunning, DNR-free (at least to my eyes) transfer. Tons of film grain, tons of detail -- you could see tiny pores on everybody's face. This is what bluray is all about....other studios could learn something from Sony, who listened to us.

The movie iitself was certainly watchable, but not great.

I actually enjoyed the movie quite a lot and I was amazed at the amount of emotion they were able to pack into a car chase during a certain scene, especially considering they went without a bombastic soundtrack or overbaked sound effects there. If it weren't for what was actually happening on the screen, you could almost call it subdued.
