what specifically do I need to adjust on my Samsung lnt4665f to get rid of parting lines that appear between black and grey when they should blend smoothly? ? ? I have a 32 inch Haier lcd tv that does not have these issues at all, it was 450.00 not 1800.00 ! I am new to all this stuff but not an idiot , if you know what I meen.....lol

That sounds like you are describing a banding/contouring issue, not clipping. Is your source device the same? The samsungs I have seen are pretty good, but are not fully devoid of banding.

it is noticeable on darker shades, like a round black object getting darker or lighter, you can see parting lines between shades, instead of a smooth transition from grey to black.

yes, that's banding/contouring. IT's casued by insufficient bitdepth.

please explain bit depth?

Color bit depth; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_depth and
also this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posterization
Unwanted posterization, also known as banding, may occur when the color depth, sometimes called bit depth, is insufficient to accurately sample a continuous gradation of color tone. As a result, a continuous gradient appears as a series of discrete steps or bands of color — hence the name

more bits means more codes available. This means you have more levels from black to white. for instance, one bit is just black and white. two bits is 4 codes. The more bits, the smoother the transition in gradations in an image. If there's visible banding in gradations, it's because there are not enough colors that are being created to create a smooth transision, in other words not enough bit depth. This could be a source problem, or a playback system problem.
