would like help in understanding how the different tuners in lcd tv ntsc atsc qam ect pick up hd stations with only the cable hooked directly to tv is this possible?

If the set has a qam tuner it is possible for the set to display unencrypted HD. An ATSC tuner is for OTA digital. An NTSC tuner is for analog OTA.
