I'm looking at all these great 1080p projectors out there now and now that I have Blu-ray, HDTV and a PS3 I'm wondering whether it would be worth upgrading to a 1080p projector?

I saw that the Mits 4900 has a great price until Feb. 14th., but looking at the reviews it appears that it doesn't have good blacks. Since the contrast ratio is 7000:1 vs the IN72 at 2000:1 wouldn't it have more shadow detail than the Infocus? Would I be happy with the Mits 4900?

Now the thing that I'm confused about is whether I should spring for the Mits 4900 or wait to get the Sony VPL-VW40/60, the Epson Home 1080u, or something coming in the next year or two? What do you think?

Thanks!

Nathan

Personally, I like waiting until I can get something that completely fits my needs. It would suck to buy a new projector and be underwhelmed by black level. If you want to skip 720p, I would wait for something like the Epson 1080p UB to drop in price. Another option is to get a 720p DLP and wait for 1080p to drop in a few years.

Ah yes. I think I have a case of upgradeitus and just wanted something. I still feel the IN72 looks great with a high def signal, but the screen door is really starting to bug me. I don't think I want to get a 720p projector, even if it is DLP.

I was looking at the Epson 1080UB, but after seeing the example pictures of the misaligned pixels it turned me off. The ability for the Sony units to correct that was a huge plus for Sony. The JVC units sound great, but the brightness (and new cost) are concerns.

I think I'll just take your advice and wait for lower prices to come about and enjoy what I already have. It'll be hard though.

Wait for lower prices? The price on the HC4900 is lower. Its lower than anything people were predicting a year ago. No wonder you are having trouble resisting upgrade-itis. The jump up from the IN72 to the HC4900 would be huge. Somehow, this particular thread got stuck in a "resolution isn't everything" warp.
The HC4900 has plenty sufficient black level by most accounts. Yes, you can get better black levels for more money, and you will be able to buy even better 1080p in a year, for the same price, but will you be so glad you waited? I think the HC4900 will keep the great majority of viewers happy for three years, no matter what better stuff comes along. When it's bulb goes, so goes the projector, that's all.

Buy the HC4900 from PP and send it back in the first 4 hours if you are not happy with it. Seems simple enough.

That's what I did. I found the HC4900 to be the best projector for $1,400.

hc4900 for a month now. IN72 previous. No more rainbows for me. Mostly watch HDDVD and BLU-Ray. Also games on PS3. Maybe I got one of the rare ones, but the blacks are fine with me and the resolution is far superior. Also, much quieter then the IN72. No regrets and very happy.

Thank you. I was actually looking for someone who actually made the jump. I'll see if I can still buy it for $1400.

Kind of irritatings. I tried to order the projector at 9:30pm PST and it said that the code wasn't valid to get the $100 discount. The people on the East Coast need to remember they aren't the only time zone on the planet. It was still Valentines day on the West Coast. In fact it should have expired at 5am EST because they should have included Hawaii and Alaska!

Oh well, everything happens for a reason.

More detail: My setup is a basement room, low ceiling, no windows and dark burgandy color (walls and ceiling). 107" matte white screen DIY.

I ran into the same thing. Rehashed all my criteria against the other projectors and came down to the same decision - HC4900 - only to see the coupon expired 'east cost time'. Oh well. Like you said, things happen for a reason. I still have a couple of other things to do in the theater till then. I'll just wait for it to be on sale again.
