Keep in mind that there are already some BD's with unique packaging. Blade Runner and Harry Potter Years 1-5 Collection for example. Although I wouldn't mind a few more releases like that. It can also be argued that the current Blu-ray packaging provides a uniform look.

I much prefer the uniformity of my Blu-ray shelf over my trainwreck of a DVD shelf :D

it's called laziness... using a single standardized design for the back just requires text and some shots from the movie where a studio like warner that does it right someone has to take the time to design a layout for the back

another thing i hate are the useless shiny swooshes and spines... disney is worse with their swoosh than universal is on the red side

I think the OP was referring to special large boxes for certain titles like the Blade Runner briefcase, not changing the standard packaging.

Yes....why yes I have seen the Blu-ray logo. I've seen a DVD logo too, but they didn't feel the need to put a giant dics logo on the back and front of the cases.

I'm not a swoosh fan and I'm not a fan of the cheap silver Bluray logo and case on some titles. I like the chrome logo and case. *bling-bling* :D

i hate blu ray cases. Not only is the blue sort of kiddie, but the cases are flimsy and feel very cheap.

I'd rather have a cheap flimsy case if it reduces the cost of the BR and pass the savings on to the consumers.

I prefer the U.K / E.U thick cases. It's looks classy, solid and appealing. Feels like you are owning a high class product.

Are you talking about sleeves, like the ones for The Pirates of the Carribbean movies or collection cases like Harry Potter/Close Encounters?

If it's for sleeves or complete series collections like the Spiderman Trilogy/Resident Evil Trilogy are really cool and I'm all in!

I'm not too hot about the other weird shape boxes(Harry Potter) for all the same reason as noted by other members above.

The Die Hard Collection...the verdict is still out on them. They're great for saving space, but for some reason I feel shortchanged on packaging-it's growing on me though.

Digi-Packs are the absolute worst, I hate them!!!

I much prefer boxes covered completely in art, as opposed to Blu-Ray cases with the large plastic banner across the top. I display all my nice boxes.

For example, I particularly like The Lion King DVD box. I feel that it looks majestic and book-like with it's matte leather style background and gold-leaf style borders. The box art would be ruined by a blue banner! I made a mock-up photo to demonstrate...

Who is the idiot that recommended super glue be used for the security tab? They leave sticky goo along the side of the box and when placed on a shelf with other cases, they stick to eachother. I can't believe how bone-headed this is.:mad:

I agree, but the lack of the swoosh is directly proportional to the lack of lossless audio.

Got Close Encounters... HATE the package i hope someone comes up with a replacement
cover soon so i can put in into a standard case. Even the Blade Runner case sucks! mine has wrinkles on the back and you can't get a replacement case fore those.

I can't wait until Sony puts out a 400 disc blu-ray changer so I can throw or give away all the blu-ray cases.

Exactly.The blue is cool,cases are thinner and smaller.Im for keeping it uniform.My BR has wrinkles as well but at least the "specialty" cases(blue planet,close encouters) are all the same height.

Why, because DVDs had a a solid, all-black case and blu-rays come with a bright blue case that screams for passing kids to say "buy me this!!" In my opinion, they look like they are made for kids. I fail to see how that is any indication of my intelligence.

I have a couple of Blu-Ray discs which came in damaged cases and one which I damaged myself when I got frustrated trying to get the plastic off the outside... Anyone know of anyplace that is selling replacement cases?

Brightly colored curved plastics tend to be associated with children's toys, while metal, wood, and leather textures tend to be associated with expensive executive/luxury products for grown-ups. Even in the VHS days, kiddie movies tended to be distributed in white round-cornered plastic clamshell cases, while mature movies tended to be distributed in square-corned cardboard boxes.

I find that Blu-Ray cases remind me of "V-Smile" games in particular, because both have similar-sized curved plastic protruding from the top. I created this mock-up to illustrate:

+1. Replacing my DVDs with Blu-Rays will add space and uniformity to my shelves.

I don't understand the hate for the CE3K packaging. I thought it was very good. It also shows that unique packaging will certainly be around for Blu-ray - it'll just be a bit shorter than the DVD counterparts.

This is a perfect example of why the current "High Def" packaging isn't going to cut it in the long run. Now that there's one official format, it doesn't need to be advertised on the front of every package. I like the size and the shape... but get rid of the banner at the top, and change the colour to something more neutral, like black or a smoky grey.

I would hate to see that happen.

I like the Blu-Ray log, I love the blue cases, and frankly for the foreseeable future people and retailers will have a mix of DVD and BD and the case color allows you to instantly determine which is which.

I couldn't agree more. I love custom packaging. Who cares if every single cover on my shelf isn't identical? Hopefully as blu matures we'll see more custom jobs in the future.

My only non-standards are Planet Earth and CE3K.

As long as the height of the case is uniform, I have no problem. My shelves are tighter than a gnat's arse, and anything taller than standard throws off my whole game.

(I don't count Blade Runner, as the height is still uniform.)
