View Full Version : new name
ggw0518 02-13-08, 07:03 PM So now that the war is almost over. Will blu-ray eventually stop calling itself blu-ray and just become HD dvd. Kind of like kleenex or q-tips (once a brand name, now a generic title for a everyday used product.)
by the way, I am glad I made the right choice with Blu unlike my "freinds" who went HD.
GamerGuyX 02-13-08, 07:07 PM No the format is officially named Blu-ray Disc. People can call it anything they want but it doesn't change its official name.
Also, the HD DVD format is an entirely different format than Blu-ray Disc. Calling Blu-ray - HD DVD is like calling Laserdisc - VHS. It doesn't make sense.

I thought it was now Blu-ray High Definition?
Or at least that's what their ads are saying lately.
shinksma 02-13-08, 07:20 PM Well, consumers like short two- or three-letter acronyms/initials. So "I'm gonna go pick up some BDs" or "I'm gonna go pick up some BRDs" rolls off the tongue just like "CDs" or "DVDs". The full name "Blu Ray" or, worse, BRHDs, would just not catch.
I vote for "BDs", but what the heck do I know.
IMHO,

DVD is 3 syllables...
HD DVD is 5.....
Blu-ray is 2...
It's even easier to say.
GamerGuyX 02-13-08, 07:32 PM I thought it was now Blu-ray High Definition?
The term "Blu-ray High Definition" merely helps get across what Blu-ray is: A High-Definition movie format.
FenixP3D 02-13-08, 07:38 PM i'll also stick with blu-ray....

Yes, BD is the correct abbreviation. Eventually, people should be referring to the discs as BDs.

BD's, VD's, STD's, Digital VD's...take your pick :p ;)
Chris Rein 02-13-08, 09:39 PM ****, let's call it what it is...
Blu Crack
Nasty little habit.
"I'm going to hop on Amazon and score me some Blu Crack on a BOGO Gold Box Special."
Sounds about right!
William 02-13-08, 09:56 PM I wish the BDA would adopt or promote BD and drop Blu-ray Disc. So many incorrectly think it is BR. BD has a nice ring to it.
John Ballentine 02-13-08, 10:53 PM I was thinking the same thing. YES - BD has a nice ring to it.
josephmckinney 02-13-08, 11:23 PM Even if someone didn't like the name Blu-Ray, why would someone support a name change which would only further confuse the general public?

Blu-ray will always call itself "blu-ray". It's a trademark name and they can use it to control what's released as a "blu-ray" disc. Some might say it's a form of quality control, others might say its a way to make money.
Btw companies spend a lot of money to keep trademarks from becoming generic. If the name becomes generic they lose control. Like how "Asprin" went from a trademark of Bayer to a generic term. Companies spend a lot of money making consumers think of brand names and they want to profit from it.
My Daughter calls the ones in the blue cases, Blu-Ray
and the ones in the red cases Red-ray!!
So, I think the name has caught on already, and doesn't need a change!
InfernoSoul 02-14-08, 12:38 AM Why would they call it "HD DVD" when it's obvious Blu-ray is more popular and is wining the war, hence more common name. I really don't understand where the OP is coming from. I mean Blu-ray = More popular, more known, more sales, more studios, ect. Why would people or even the company call it another name? This makes no sense. I'm failing to grasp what the OP is getting at. Can anyone explain to me why one would think this?

I agree with you. It should be call blu magic. Once you get started you can't stop. It's taking over everything.

Now that's really cute! :)
As for me, it's Blu-ray or the highway. I don't think I'll ever call it BD. Sounds like tighty-whitey underwear. :p

LP, CD, LD, MD, DAT, VHS, DVD so BD would work well with a long line of successful media names. Also BDA refers to Blu-Ray Disc as BD too.
...Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format....
Just look how many people (several in this thread) incorrectly call it Blu-Ray, BluRay, BR, BlueRay, Blue-Ray,....

Official name will and should of course remain Blu-ray. But the short handle could be Blu as in "I need to go score some Blu dude".
I call it blu. Or BD. Somtimes blu-ray.

Sure they do - they even made a logo for it ;)
ToddUGA 02-14-08, 09:57 AM Change the name? Nope. I like the way Blu-ray sounds. Sounds futuristic.
tutelary 02-14-08, 10:00 AM The OP is one of the dumbest posts I think I've ever seen here.
Combine the name Blu-ray into "Bay," after one of its most vocal supporters, the great Michael Bay! :)
He will of course get royalties so that he can finance more Bad Boys and Transformers movies!
Off to find some good deals on Bays!
fareedrizkalla 02-16-08, 02:43 PM Or call it Blu 1 syllable... :D
MySassyGirl 02-16-08, 03:18 PM I believe whenever you use DVD, Toshiba gets royalty from it.
