View Full Version : Pro Logic Receiver
I have an analog Sony A/V receiver (no digital inputs:() with dolby pro logic surround. I plan on connecting the analog audio out of a Sony HD LCD to the receiver, and connecting an HD Cable/DVR and a DVD (Dolby Digital/DTS) to the LCD via separate HDMI cables. My question is (and I hope this is the correct forum), will a surround signal (compatible with my receiver) pass from the DVR/DVD through the analog audio out of the LCD to the receiver? Hope that made sense.
I don't think so. You need to go in the other direction. Connect the video outputs to the TV and the analog audio outputs to the receiver.

Hope that made sense.First you will need to ascertain whether your TV will pass-through an HDMI audio signal, as 2-channel stereo, to its analog R/L outputs. If it will, then you should have no problems. DPL requires no specific surround signal, but only a R/L analog stereo signal. Some stereo signals associated with video broadcasts or tracks CAN have surround information matrixed into the stereo tracks and this surround info can subsequently be decoded by a DPL processor. Whether your TV will properly pass these matrixed stereo tracks is uncertain, but I would think that if your TV will pass-through HDMI audio to its R/L analog outs, it will pass these types of signals.
If your TV will not pass-through the HDMI audio via its R/L analog outputs, then, as FMW suggests, you will have to use a separate R/L analog audio connection to your receiver from each of your devices.

Thanks for all replies. Talking about the analog R/L outputs, the TV manual says "You can use these outputs to listen to your TV's audio through your stereo system." So, it seems to follow that HDMI audio should be sent there also (it seems). Even so, as you point out, the question remains whether it will properly pass matrixed signals. Taking delivery of the TV Wed, so I'll get to play then :)
And re the other replies: yes, it is high time to upgrade. I'll forward your comments to my wife ... ;)
Wow, how old is that receiver?
Wow, how old is that receiver?
Man, I've had it so long I can't even remember. The copyright notice on the manual says 1994, so I guess its at least 14 years old.
sivadselim 02-16-08, 12:35 PM Talking about the analog R/L outputs, the TV manual says "You can use these outputs to listen to your TV's audio through your stereo system."Yes, you can listen to the TV's own audio, as in the audio from OTA stations.
So, it seems to follow that HDMI audio should be sent there also (it seems). No, it doesn't "seem to follow". You're going to have to check to see for yourself what the TV is capable of doing. It may, indeed, pass-through audio from the HDMI input its R/L analog audio outs. IT may not.
Even so, as you point out, the question remains whether it will properly pass matrixed signals.I suspect that if it will pass-through HDMI audio to its R/L analog outputs that this will not be a problem. Check to see if they devices that you'll be connecting via HDMI to the TV have some sort of audio setting that will pass a 2.0 channel signal to begin with instead of letting the TV down mix the signal.
