View Full Version : Should I stick with Infocus?
postalmal 02-15-08, 01:13 PM I want to get some input on weather or not I should stick with Infocus projectors. I purchased my first one (X1) about 4 years ago and was happy with it until it started the color wheel buzz noise. I called Infocus about the problem and they offered to upgrade me to a refurbished SP4805 for $99 plus my X1. After doing some research on the 4805 I jumped on the offer and I've loved this projector for the past 2 1/2 years. Now it has recently developed the light tunnel issue and I am not a happy camper. I am now considering the the SP 7210 after reading many great things about it but I'm hesitant because of the problems I've experienced with my previous Infocus units. Should I get this projector or consider other brands? I'm looking to stay around the $1-$1200K price range.
tradewinds 02-15-08, 02:13 PM The 7210 is one fantastic PJ. Some say it's only negative may be that it is noisier than some others, however I find this not to be true and it is definitely quieter than the 4805. AFAIK, there are no issues with the 7210. Bob Williams and his team engineered this PJ to be a high end top quality PJ. It is remarkable that even today, about 3 years after it was release, it still is one of the best affordable PJs out there and better than most 1080p PJs.
BTW - Good luck on getting your hands on one these days. As far as Infocus support on these at this time is an unknown.
I would say yes, for $1000 you cannot beat the 7210 IMO.
BuffaloJim 02-15-08, 03:03 PM If you're generally happy with Infocus and DLPs, you should probably go with the 7210. It will be very tough to beat the overall image quality of that unit for around $1000. If you do want to go to $2000, there are more choices to consider, including some 1080P units, although I don't think there are any 1080P DLPs available under 2 grand. Optoma's HD80 might squeak under 2 large pretty soon, but it's still over that figure now.
Personally, I'd probably save my money and go for the 7210. Moving from the 4805 to the 7210 is going to make your eyes very happy.

gwlaw99 02-15-08, 05:23 PM Is the 7210 still available for $1000? I thought the deal was over? If it is, then yes, the 7210 is a great projector.
MurphyAgain 02-15-08, 05:35 PM I thought the deal was over? .
it is.
here's my reply from woot.
Canceled orders won’t be available, they will do something else with them.
people can believe what they like, VIP link won’t be back .
No idea on the IN76’s
cheers
murph:)
BuffaloJim 02-15-08, 07:26 PM Since the 7210 is no longer available, that does change things dramatically. The IN76 is a fine projector, and it's certainly one of the "coolest" looking ones. It's available as a refurbished unit for well under $1000 when you can find one. I always thought the IN76 was overpriced as a projector, although I think the price is coming down. The In72 came way down and the went back up so you never know with Infocus.

postalmal 02-16-08, 12:16 AM I did read about that deal being over but I've seen some on the bay go for around the same price. I know that rolling the dice but if that's the absolute best PJ I can get for what I'm trying to spend, I'll take that chance.
"Should I stick with Infocus?"
Can't see why not. Scroll down and look at these IN82 SS. I'm uncertain what the DNP adds. Good hunting.

postalmal 02-16-08, 12:07 PM Thanks for the link but that's way out of my price range. I have no doubt that their high end PJ's are fantastic. I'm just concerned about the issues I've had with the lower end models.
john duve 02-16-08, 12:29 PM Hey postalmal, I was kind of in your same position a few months back. I've had my 4805 for about three years and was in love with it, never had problem one with it. When the 7210s started showing up with some great prices I had to have one. It was on the bay just before the other deal came out, but had an infocus warranty on it. It didn't work when I received it new (bad lamp) but Infocus took care of it promptly, and it has been perfect ever since. If you liked your 4805, you'll love the 7210. As I look around out there I still see them ocassionally with the factory warranty on them. I would make sure that it had one before I jumped on it though. JD
rrhomes 02-16-08, 01:42 PM ^ thats good advice, I know I want a SP7210 but not with out a warranty, it'd really piss me off to pay $$$+ and it fart out on me in a week or two for what ever reason. I'm trying to keep my head about this but MY FINGER IS ITCHING damn I need a pj.
ChaoticMachinery 02-16-08, 05:45 PM I've had issues with Infocus honoring their extended warranty. I tried to send my 4800 in for service and was told that they no long service the project. I still had 2 more months left on my warranty. They want me to send my projector in for an IN 72 and $100. So I told them sounds good. Then I was told that they did not have any projectors in. But I could send in my projector and the $100. I spent the next two months I called twice a week to see if they had any projectors in. Never did. I asked countless times to see if they would just pay to have my projector fixed by the projector doctor. Nope.
I will never by an Infocus product again. Even the Home Theater dealer in my area are dropping them due Infocus not honoring warranties.

spyder696969 02-16-08, 07:42 PM ...After doing some research on the 4805 I jumped on the offer and I've loved this projector for the past 2 1/2 years.
Wow. 2.5 years until you had an issue that can be easily fixed with a bit of patience and for a mere $2. Not bad compared to something like the Optoma H7X debacle where $300 bulbs lasted 1,000 hours if you were lucky and they did nothing about it from day one.
postalmal 02-17-08, 05:49 PM Yeah, 2.5 years but only about 900 hours until that god awful tint showed up on the right side of my screen. Most people who come over don't even notice it but for all of us who own PJ's, you know how any imperfection will eventually drive you mad. Or is that just me? Anyway, I did read about the fix and actually considered doing it but I'm just not comfortable performing surgery on any PJ. Just my luck it will end up worse than it was when I started.
rocky01 02-17-08, 09:49 PM I love(d) the 4805 but practically forced Infocus to fix light tunnel issue under tail end of warranty. When I got it back, the bulb blew. I've avoided the projector question since then and watching regular big screen TV since Infocus was so recalcitrant fixing their stuff.
RobbyTV 02-18-08, 07:03 AM why didn't you just send it in? instead of waiting 2 months for the warranty to expire? it was towards the end of your warranty so it would of been smart to send it in with insurance. You are the only person on AVS that has posted this specific problem.
And how many years did you get out of your projector? maybe infocus took this into account. And the fact that you waited 2 months means your warranty was over.

postalmal 02-22-08, 12:04 PM Well after spending a few days doing some extensive research, I'm still not sure!! LOL
I've narrowed it down to the 7210 or the Mits hc1500. The 7210 cost more but is the PQ that much better for the money? Another concern is placement. I have a fixed
105" screen I used with the 4805 from approximately 15' away, 8' ceiling. Will I have a problem with either pj producing the same image size from the same location? I've sold my 4805 so I need to make a decision pretty soon.
