View Full Version : DirecTv RF remotes
tank3467 02-16-08, 04:53 AM I have a new Directv HD 21 receiver, and I was going to buy the RF remote from Directv, but the DTV installation man told me it wouldn't transmit through any walls. The setup I have is used only for my bar which only has my TV and my receiver. The receiver is through a door in a closet, about 10 feet away, max.
Im wondering if anyone has used one of DTV's remotes and if it will work. I dont need anything fancy I just do not want to have to open the door to use the receiver.
What does everyone think?
bryansj 02-16-08, 08:29 AM I think that the remote that comes with the HD21 is already RF. You need to go into System Setup and Remote, then choose RF. I can't believe that the installer would say that RF wouldn't go the walls since that is one of the reasons for using RF.
Maverickster2 02-16-08, 10:11 AM Bryan is correct, the remote that came with your HR21 should already be RF. You just need to go into the Setup menu in the HR21 and select RF under the Remote option to get it to do RF instead of IR. He's also right that it goes through walls. If you're new to DirecTV, two words of caution -- never believe anything a CSR or Installer tells you. They're notorious for making it up on the spot. Reliable advice can be found here and at the DBSTalk forum.

btwilson 02-17-08, 12:31 PM I am just learning that you can't rely on what the directv csr's or installers tell me. Without going into a long story concerning my remote problem about which I've gotten many conflicting answers from directv, here is my issue: it appears an rf remote will not work with their standard receiver. I have 2 receivers in one cabinet, one HD DVR and one standard. The standard receiver controls two tv's so I need two RF remotes. Do I have to now buy an HD receiver to get the RF capability? I see no way to add the remote antenna DTV sent me for their standard receiver. The installer didn't know and left me with a mess. Thanks for any help!

Right, there is no current standard receiver with RF remote capabilities, you can get either R15 or R16 SD dvr that are RF remote capable.
GrandFunkJ 06-19-09, 01:17 AM does anybody know what the range on these remotes are?
h-21 the box isnt RF, HR-23, box is rf, i have tested mine about 30 feet away through walls. beyond that i wouldnt be able to tell if i was changing anything without someone in the room watching and i never investigated that far.

Wrong, the H21 is RF, but it doesn't come with a RF remote though.

True also the H21 has internal antenna.
Duct Tape 06-21-09, 12:05 PM my hr21 is in the basement, and the rf remote works all the way up on the 2nd floor in my daughters bedroom. dont listen to directv installers, they are the rejects of the installation world and don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.
