I posted this under the yamaha 1800 thread, but this maybe a better place...

I'm a new proud owner of a Yamaha 1800 and I have been fooling with the different settings and stuff. I notice that when I run the test tones that I get nothing from my subwoofer (axiom ES 350) during the test. I have the front and sub LFE on "both"....front speakers set to "large". I ran the avia set up disk and still didn't get a tone on the subs when the set up test ran from that disk.

I know the sub works cause I tapped the end of the cable and it "woke up"...I ran the test tone again and it worked. I let it sit for awhile, pulled out my old sony and hooked the to it and ran the test tone...again nothing...tapped the end of the cable....the test tone worked.

Do I have a setting off in my sub or is the sub bad?? Still early AM here so once the kids are up...I'm gonna test a movie again...it kicked in when I played "Transformers" last night. I may run the auto set up again on the receiver too. Is there a setting some where that I switched off accidently? The Yamaha crossover is set to 110. I have the Axiom sub turned all the way to the right. .

thanks to anyone who can help me.

Do you have your sub connected via a single RCA cable?

Also change your speaker setting to "small" so the bass is redirected from your mains to your sub...

If you tapped the end of the cable and it started working its probably a bad cable or a bad input jack on the sub. Try using a different cable and see what happens.

PB,

It is an Axiom EP350 :)

I believe the 350 has standby mode that wakes up when it senses a signal. It has been years since I owned the 350 so can't recall for sure. You may want to post this on the Axiom forum.

You want all speakers set to small with an 80hz crossover for starters on the receiver. Turn the volume on the sub to about 11 o'clock for starters. Turn the crossover on the sub to bypass or all the way clockwise, since the receiver is managing the bass.

Are you using the sub pre out on the receiver to the left line input on the sub?

Is there an on/auto/off setting on the sub? Try switching it to on if it is on auto. What is your LFE level at on the receiver? What is the sub level at? Make sure they are both (or whichever you have) set to max.

Also you could try a y splitter at the end of the RCA cable going to the sub. Split it into both of the inputs. This could help the sub get a higher signal and turn on easier if you can't make it on all the time with a switch.

And if it still has a bit of trouble there is something else you can do...you could turn all your speaker levels down a few decibels on the receiver, so the sub will be louder in comparison. Then turn up the main volume to compensate. Then if your sub is too loud you can just turn the volume knob on the sub down. What you're trying to do is increase the signal going to sub so it turns on easier.
