View Full Version : Subwoofer Problems
Hi Guys,
I'm having troubles with my subwoofer, been busy lately so it was switched off until now, my subwoofer is a Karat 725 SC,
http://www.canton.de/en-produktdetail-archiv-karatas725sc.htm
And my receiver is a Denon AVR-4306, wiring seems correct using the mono right (red) to go on the receiver subwoofer input ext.out.
The problem is whenever Im doing a level test on my speaker i get the static noise on all speakers but when it comes to the subwoofer i get a monstruous noise, like really really lound, switching the sw volume doesnt change anything and only thing to stop the noise is to swith it off.
Any ideas?

Sirquack 02-16-08, 12:06 PM You don't want to use an "input" on the receiver, you want "output". You should be using the Subwoofer (SW) Pre-Out jack on the receiver to go to the line in (usually left since it is a mono signal) on the sub.
Thx guys, well here's the back picture of my receiver, it's plugged on SW Pre-Out, I checked the manual and they say that's where it should go:
And thats the back of my subwoofer, it's plugged under R/mono low level input, I also try the other red/white but no luck.
I'm sad :(
goneten 02-16-08, 01:06 PM Are you still getting this horrible loud noise out of your subwoofer ? Have you tried swopping cables ? Other than that, it is possible that you might have a nasty ground loop.

Sirquack 02-16-08, 01:19 PM Just wanted to make sure you had it right on the reciever since you originally said "input ext." which is wrong, you want the pre-out SW output jack below the "ext-in" section.
What do you have the sub level db's set on the receiver for the sub channel when your doing the tests? I would start at about 0, and put the volume on the sub at midpoint or below to start. Also turn up your crossover on the sub all the way, as I'm sure your letting the receiver handle the crossover managment.
Try the "left" low level input on the sub.
Thx for the replies.
I did quite a lot of testing, when I do the channel test I ended up starting with the sub at -12db on the receiver wich is the lowest, as soon as the receiver send any input to the sub it gets crazy, turning the volume down (on the sub) once the noise starts doesnt change anything, its doing very loud noise until I switch it off, changing crossover on the sub or phase (for w/e that do) doesnt change anything
I can watch a DVD and the sub will behave until some bass are sent and it will start the crazy noise again.
I also tried changing the cable but no luck :(
I guess my first question would be does it sound like a hardware problem, subwoofer seems to work ok can it be the A/V sub channel that's messed up, I'm running out of things to try
mailiang 02-16-08, 04:09 PM First try using the one of the speaker level inputs to the sub. (Remember to disconnect the sub preout cable first) Example: right channel speaker output from receiver to right channel speaker input on sub. Right sub speaker out to main right channel speaker. Play a cd in the stereo or direct mode. If the sub works ok then your problem is probably with the receiver. If sub still makes noise, it's the sub. The route of any problem like this is a process of elimination.

you mean plug the subwoofer as if it was let's say the right front speaker, use the jack and plug it under *Pre out* Front right and see if that works.
Just a stupid question, I'm using normal speaker cable for my 5 speakers, if i use a jack it means that front right will be *plugged* twice, speaker cable and jack, do I need to unnplug first the speaker cable and then plug the jack?
Let's say it's the receiver output thats messedup, do I have an alternative to plug in the sw, I attached the pictures of the back of my receiver.
Thx

As I said in my previous post. Disconnect the cable from your sub that you are currently using and just use the speaker level wire that you are using for your main speakers. Disconnect your right channel speaker from the receiver. Then connect the speaker wire to the right channel speaker/high level input on your sub. Then take another piece of speaker wire and connect that wire to the subs speaker/high level right channel output. Connect that wire to your right channel speaker. This is often referred to as a daisy chain. Normally you would do the same with the left channel but since this is just a test, for all intent and purpose, this will be enough to allow you to check the operation of the sub. Capesch?

Yes thx for the clarification, did that same thing, but then I tried switching the power outlet and then nothing I guess has someone mentionned it's ground loop, did some googling and it seems it will be one of those thing i will never understand how they work, like a microwave.
Just a slightly off-topic question, If a subwoofer must wired using a single cable to sub-out why the hell do i have like 15 things on the back of mine, whare are the use of them.
and what does the phase do?
thx a lot for your support and help everyone, greatly appreciated
