Guys bonuses have been slashed at work big time, so what was once a generous tv/home theater budget has been slashed. Prior to yesterday I had planned to spend 600 or 700 on a sub. Now my max budget is 500 bucks. So I'm leaning towards the HSU 2.3 thoughts on this sub? Anything better for the money? HELP!

Does anyone know if HSU ever does free shipping? The 2.3 with shipping is 552 :(

No offense, but if you can't afford to spend an extra $50 over $500 maybe you should save up some more money? ;)

No offense taken, I may be able to swing it, I'm going to email HSU to see if they have any upcoming specials.

Basically my original budget tripled and when it looked like bonuses were going to be good I started reading up on better equipment. Then boom they slash bonuses so basically I'm trying to get back close to my original 5k budget for home theater (including the tv). I'll be slightly over I think due to parts of the system i've already purchased but, I'm sick of waiting and now with this bonus or lack thereof I'm either going to ahve to compromise a bit or I'll have to wait awhile longer and the 5080's may be gone by then :(

If you must stay under $500 including shipping, why not take a look at the eD line. They have at least four worthwhile subs within your budget including shipping costs.

Wife veto'd those due to the industrial type finish.

There is the x-sub by AV123 which can be had with stunningly beautiful finishes for probably under $300 shipped. You will not be damaging your foundation with this sub, but it is said to be very nice sounding.

I don't think she'll go for the Hsu either. It's just a rough black finish as well unless you're opting to pay extra for the wood finish.

All the pics of seen they look smooth...they dont have that popcorn look that eD has.

My wife wasn't too happy when I bought my HSU 3.3 home, I should've asked :). Our wives are tolerant enough of our hobbies sometimes it helps to manage their expectations :).

Got any upclose pics of the 3.3? I'd assume the finish is the same on the 2.3?

Going back to cosmetics, the HSU does have a slightly smoother finish and to me looks less industrial industrial than the ED.

Not right now, I'm sure there are some around the forum. If you don't find any by this evening I will post pics when I get home tonight.

Sounds good, I've found a couple, but not many upclose pics in good lighting...so if you could snap a couple with the flash on or something so I can see the texture that would be uber cool :)

Will do. It'll be around 10 pm or so.

if $500 is your max budget, and your wife has a high aesthetic value, then I would suggest your look at the X-plosive b av123...it's a seaton design, has a lot of the MFW15 DNA, and from early reports, it packs a huge punch for its price.

the finish, is of course, typical av123: just outstanding.

Driver: Custom 10" active and 12" passive drivers

Amplifier: 150 watts RMS (the driver is ultra-efficient so you should compare this to 500 watts with a normal driver)

What does a 10 inch active and 12 inch passive in the same enclosure do for me? I would have thought that the active driver is the one of real importance?

Also how can a 150watt sub be equivelant to a 500watt sub unless the 500watt sub was from a really ineffecient driver? Also will this 10 inch sub have the thump of say the 2.3?

No frequency response is available for this product yet, so hopefully it will be pretty soon, I guess that that point we'll have a real idea of its sound qualities?

Not necessarily an inefficient driver but rather the driver operates inefficiently because of the enclosure size. The X-plosive uses a relatively big enclosure which means that the driver will operate more efficiently with less power.

The smaller the enclosure the greater the air compliance in that enclosure (air resistance goes up as enclosure size decreases). Reason being, a smaller box will pressurize easier than a larger box and the byproduct of that higher pressure is higher air resistance to motional force.

So when the cone moves back it generates a pressure wave in the enclosure that prevents the cone from physically moving back out and compressing the air so the driver requires more power to move further to counter that pressure build-up. Using a larger enclosure will have less air resistance to motional force, the springiness of the air weakens so the cone can move further with less power required.

Look at the Sunfire range of subwoofers. Their tiny cubes are extremely inefficient but in order to overcome those physical disadvantages, very high excursion drivers are used with lots of amplifier power and lots of equalization to shape the frequency response curve. The result is that distortion can rise significantly due to the power demands placed on the driver as well as undue stress due to EQ.

I hope that helps a little. Cheers !

I went with an HSU 2.3 and am glad I did. In fact just watched Live Free or Die Hard, not a great movie but that automatic gunfire sounded spectacular on 2.3. I'll be adding an MBM 12 in the next month to complete the collection.

Seaton seems to strive for high efficiency in all of his sub designs. Even the Submersive seems to have relatively high output for a sealed design with 1K watts.

Hey guys, here's a diagram of the room. The door on the bottom opens to the Kitchen, the door on the left to the rest of the house and the door on the right is the laundry room.

The sub has to go in the spot listed on the diagram, under the tv (blue bar). Figured I would post that in case it alters responses.

I like the HSU because its a 12 and has plenty of power, but I also like the idea of the explosive simply because its smaller and I could add a second either on the other side of the tv or stacked on the first. But if one HSU would be plenty then I would think getting two of the xplosive subs may be a waste? I dunno...just passing on my thoughts to you guys...

the size of the enclosure and efficiency of the driver make up for the relatively low power plant.....see goneten's explanation above which is pretty accurate.

yes, it is not available YET, but the prototype has been tested and listened to on a couple of GTG's, with mighty impressive results thus far for a sub of this price.

i'll write you more later....i got a busy day with the kids today:o

I always think it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission, however, with my wife I don't do that ;) I live with her every day and respect her enough to involve her in every decision. I don't HAVE to ask permission, but I do because I respect her.

Exactly, my wife said that I could get what I wanted, but she asked that I at least consider her input so I try to do that :)

What about the Velodyne DPS-12 or the Cadence CSX-15? Both sound awesome in my opinion and can be had for about $400 shipped. Or, if you can swing it, the Epik Knight and the MFW-15 are both around $600 and will pretty much beat anything in their respective price range. (btw, all the subs I mentioned have very nice finishes)

Haha, I am the same way man. It's cute the way she wants to be involved in every decision. Nice thing is, I have a dedicated theater room so I can have whatever I want in it. :) However, she gets the rest of the house. :P

I went to Velodyne's site and they didn't have prices posted, or did I just miss them? Never heard of Cadence?

Can anyone tell me what that passive 12 inch radiator does on the upcoming x series sub?

The sub looks good enough - my wife has no problem with it.

The 2.3 is an exceptional product. More powerful then the others would have you believe.

Very reliable, sounds equally great with music, the 2.3 is not just a boom box.

And for your info, HSU subs dig very deep with movies.

Good luck with what ever you will end up.

So basically you can get what you want .......... As long as she ok's it. ;)

I'm glad I get my one room in the house. My wife gets the other 2500 sq ft. Now that's compromise in a marriage.

Thats the ultimate goal, but being in our mid 20's we only had 25k to put down on our house when we bought it a few years ago. As a result we got a sort of run of the mill house. 1900 sq ft with no media room :( Our next house should have a theater room, we've already discussed it :D
