View Full Version : First Server Build - A Few Questions Reyd23cs 02-16-08, 05:20 PM edit Shark64 02-17-08, 07:54 AM I have built 2 WHS servers to date. Your choices look good to me. My comments: 1. Add a optical IDE drive. You can install WHS from an external USB drive but for the money I recommend a permanent drive. 2. Add another fan/fan-controller to the front of the case to blow in and cool those 4 HDDs. 3. A 300 watt supply would work fine but the Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC ATX 430W Power Supply from Newegg for $28 would be my choice today. One last comment from experience, WHS uses the physical SATA port connection from the motherboard to keep track of the drives. Once you connect a drive and add it to the drive pool never change the port without going through the "remove drive" dance. This one of the many causes of the "Invalid File Handle" errors that WHS is becoming famous for. Reyd23cs 02-17-08, 03:27 PM I have built 2 WHS servers to date. Your choices look good to me. I decided to go with the Antec Earthwatts 430V Power Supply. Ended up picking up 2 of the new "Green" 500GB Western Digital SATA drives at best buy for $119 each. We'll see how they actually run. sirwired 02-18-08, 09:36 AM The EarthWatts 430 should be more than enough. In fact, I'd say that you could run six drives, easy, on that PSU, since the normal massive power drains of a video card and hot-running CPU aren't there. I would pick up an intake fan for the drives, as Reyd suggested. SirWired grigsby 02-20-08, 12:54 PM I just completed my WHS....and I am enjoying the heck out of it. If you happen to get stuck during the install I recommend the windows home server forum. They are very quick to answer any questions you might have. My issues during install was that WHS did not like the dvd drive I was using nor did it care for the wireless mouse....finicky OS but once it loads up it seems to work well. LRDAGURU 02-20-08, 04:30 PM all I am currently looking to build a server that would stream video from that server to my tv. I dont want to use s-video or any other cable besides HDMI because of logistical reasons. What if anything do you recommend? The hard drives, cases, etc.. I am ok with. I am more concerned with the "how" to get the video from the server to the TV. Is a tv tuner needed or just an RJ45 jack to my router good enough with some software running on my pc?? Any articles or info you can provide will be appreciated. My focus is that I have alot of music and alot of DVD's I would like to put on a hard drive and be able to watch them on my tv. The details in between i am unclear of... Ended up with the following parts: Cooler Master 534 Case (absolutely great case for 50 bucks) AMD Athlon X2 4200+ GA-MA69VM-S2 Motherboard 2 of the new 500GB Green Drives Antec Earthwatt PSU 430V 2GB of Kingston RAM Everything installed automatically, including the two SATA hard drives. The only driver that was needed was the LAN card on the MB. Would recommend all of the above parts for a server build. It's running great so far; just need a new gigabit router gjvrieze 02-26-08, 11:43 AM So what server sw are you using?? In the first post, the OP, said WHS..... |
