View Full Version : HDHomeRun Question JJJatAVS 02-16-08, 06:07 PM I have EyeTV 3 but am unhappy. Is there a way to watch / record from the HDHomeRun with different software? Freeware? chefklc 02-16-08, 07:31 PM I've looked back at all your posts since january, JJJ, and I think you've had a lot of issues going on with QAM, coax, splitters, understanding EyeTV, etc, and I don't think you've actually set up your HD Homerun properly yet. But, if you want to leave OS X, you could always boot into Windows--for the first year or so the HD Homerun was Windows (and Myth, I think.) JJJatAVS 02-16-08, 07:48 PM You are very right. I have tooo many issues. Bottom line is 1/2 the stations do not come in, the other 1/2 cut in and out. Currently the signal strength is a 97% but the quality changes from 0 to 30%. I did re--configure multiple times including deleting all prefs. I even have a Motorola signal booster. (a HDTV which is on the same 2 way splitter but without the booster gets all channels fine). The HDHR doesn't get any, with the booster as above. I actually start wondering if my HDHR is a lemon?! gmwedding 02-17-08, 05:51 PM JJJatAVS: I just set up the HDHomeRun on a gigabit Ethernet network (with Netgear switches and Cat 6 wiring) for Comcast cable QAM signals. So far, I've only encountered one minor problem with it when watching digital TV on a new 3GHz, Dual Quad Core (8 cores) Mac Pro (with 3GB of memory and OS X v10.4.10) on 24-inch Eizo computer display. I found the EyeTV 3 software installation and setup to be very straightforward, although the initial QAM channel scanning was slow. Aside from the possible causes chefklc mentioned, could your problems be related to network wiring and bandwidth? What are the component specs for your computer network? While we have three cable splitters on the household coax, I've only connected one of the HDHR tuners so far, so I don't yet have a splitter on the HDHR segment of the setup. I'm seeing a steady 100% signal strength and 100% quality with the gigabit switches and Category 6 Ethernet cabling, and have not experienced any freezes or stutters. In the first week of use, the HDHomeRun did lose a channel signal twice, but both times, this signal was automatically restored after just a couple of seconds. I do need to add a cable splitter in front of the HDHR and connect both tuners to test this further. Also, I haven't enabled the HDHR for wireless yet, nor have I installed EyeTV 3 on my old PowerBook G4 yet, but I plan to try that next, and do wired and wireless tests with that slower CPU. While the PowerBook does have gigabit Ethernet, it only has 802.11g wireless. Category 5e Ethernet cable is the minimum you should be using for video, and Category 6 cables are recommended. Eventually, we'll probably drop cable, switch to satellite, and put the HDHomeRun on an OTA antenna, because Comcast does not carry two of the local HD channels in our area. In fact, I'll probably make this switch first. But so far, the HDHR seems to be a terrific product. Since the large plasma in our den is a display without a tuner, I was looking forward to adding a Mac mini to the entertainment center and use the new tuner there as well. However, since Apple's new HD movie rentals are limited to AppleTV for now, I may have to choose between the mini and the the AppleTV. For anyone with a tunerless HD display, this presents a dilemma (I really need both a mini and an AppleTV). The bottom line though, is that I've found the HDHR to be very reliable so far... Does the power adapter show a steady red LED or does it blink? JJJatAVS 02-18-08, 05:18 PM Thank you guys but I could resolve my problem. This was really stupid me! I took the cabling as it was (one 2 way splitter) and hooked the HDHR one one "out" of it. The problem was the TimeWarner guy connected the main feed to the other "out" and the HDTV to the "in". For some reason the HDTV still had enough signal for watching TV so I did not realize it. But the HDHR did not have enough signal strength. Adding a booster gave more strength but no quality - ergo lots of problems. Well, I switched the main feed to "in" and all devices to the "out" and all works perfect. Thanks again for trying to help. |
