Hello- My dear brother recently died and I've inherited the nicest audio equipment I likely ever own...unfortunately I am clueless about such things and can't seem to get the system to work.

The system consists of a Denon AVR-687 surround receiver,
a pair of Definitive Technology BP 2004 speakers,
a Definitive C1 center channel speaker,
and a pair of Definitive surround speakers, model not specified

My stuff:
Toshiba DVD player SD-4980
Phillips CD Recorder
Sanyo SDTV

There's no accompanying literature with the speakers and I can't seem to find it online. I was able to download a manual for the the Denon receiver, and have attached all components using the instructions with the manual.

I was never able to get this system to work (read: make noise- it did power up, of course) when I dog-sat for my brother in the past...presumably when everything was correctly wired (the system did in fact work for him). So I don't know that my present problem is necessarily with the wiring. The back of the BP2004s state that the speakers, with their built-in sub-woofers, turn on and off automatically. There are small red lights on the back of the speakers that, I'm guessing, light up when the speakers are powered on. This is not happening. I don't know if I am not operating the receiver correctly or if I'm not doing something with the speakers that I should be.

This is probably fairly complex and I'll end up hiring someone to hook it up properly and show me how to operate it, but I was hoping to find an audiophile who might be able to point out a few simple things that I'm missing. If any of you could offer any tips or advice, I would greatly appreciate it, and I thank you in advance. Although I'm clueless about a lot of this, I most certainly have an appreciation for the quality of it and I look forward to using it.

Many thanks!
