*** SEPTEMBER '09 EDIT ***
Daft Punk will provide eleven unique mixes for the game! Here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxGH7ga1wgE) of them in the game as controllable characters.

*** MAY '09 EDIT ***
ign.com (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/984/984227p1.html) has a full preview:
DJ Hero is presented much like a Guitar Hero game. The player follows a pre-set stream of colored icons along with music, while the camera pans around the stage and audience. Instead of streaming vertically down the screen, your notes spin by on a vinyl track like a record. There are three lanes: green, red, and blue. The green and blue represent each track used in the current mix -- think of them as record A and record B. Icons indicate when to open the fader to one or both tracks and when to scratch. Scratches are signified by arrows pointing in the direction you move the turntable. On easier difficulty settings you can ignore these arrows and scratch how you please. The red lane is your sample stream, used to trigger sound effects or vocal samples.

The turntable and mixer peripheral has been created by Red Octane, maker of all the Guitar Hero peripherals. On the face of the record you'll find three colored buttons that correspond with the lanes onscreen. Over on the mixer the cross-fader acts realistically and opens the flood gates for records A and B. There is a Euphoria button that triggers DJ Hero's version of star power. Finally an effects dial selects from a variety of standard effects. The peripheral disconnects so that you can play with the turntable on the right or left side.

It's about being the life of the party," says producer Will Townsend. "You are the center of attention, in control of the music, and in control of what that music is going to be."

A huge difference between DJ Hero and Guitar Hero is that here the music is mostly original mash-up material. Over 100 songs have been licensed, which will be mixed into various combinations to create over 70 unique tracks. So you're not just DJing "Feel Good Inc." by Gorillaz – you're mixing it with "Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye. Professional turntablists like DJ Shadow have crafted some of these cuts. Here's a taste of the track list:

* Gorillaz' "Feel Good Inc." vs. Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"
* Chuck Brown & The Souls Searchers' "Bustin' Loose" vs. The Zombies' "Time of the Season" (DJ Shadow Mix)
* David Bowie's "Let's Dance" vs. KRS-One's "Jack of Spades" (DJ Shadow Mix)
* Nirvana's "All Apologies" vs. Rick James' "Give It to Me Baby" (DJ Shadow Mix)
* Jurassic 5's "Jayou" vs. Herbie Hancock's "Rockit"
* Tears for Fears' "Shout" vs. Eric Prydz' "Pjanoo"
* Plus tracks from Beastie Boys, Beck, Blondie, Billy Squire, and more

*** JANUARY '09 EDIT ***

For so long now (http://ps3.qj.net/ActiBliz-boss-finally-confirms-DJ-Hero-out-this-year/pg/49/aid/128542), it's been rumored about. Everyone keeps talking about it "yeah, so there's this new DJ Hero spinoff supposedly in the works, yada yada yada," but ever since, nothing has been officially confirmed by Activision Blizzard.

That changes now, care of ActiBliz boss Robert Kotick. It looks like he slipped his tongue too, because it was one of the last things he mentioned (nonchalantly, at that) in a long interview with CNBC.

As a parting question, one of the reports asks how ActiBliz is handling the changing demands of the consumers and how they cope with trying to deliver more creative games. Kotick's answer:

"We have this product called DJ Hero coming out later this year which is a turntable that you can actually play competitively, spin discs, and mix songs on. This physical interface is definitely starting to have a real impact on the consumer. Online is creating a much more social experience than videogames have had before. You're continuing to see lots of innovation that's adding lots of new audiences."

*** OCTOBER '08 EDIT ***

The title is confirmed (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55571)(thx Cysquatch):

Following Activision's trademark registration for "DJ Hero" and a smattering of recent rumors, it has now been confirmed that the company is indeed working on DJ Hero.

"Activision's doing a DJ Hero game, and I can't comment on what we're doing [at Neversoft]," Guitar Hero World Tour project director Brian Bright told Joystiq.

Neversoft, a fully-owned subsidiary of Activision, has been tasked with the Guitar Hero series since creator Harmonix was bought by MTV, leading to the rival series Rock Band. Prior to Guitar Hero, Neversoft was known for its work on the Tony Hawk series.

"We're working on the future and next-gen," Bright said of the studio's future, though he was unable to offer specifics. "If I wasn't excited about it I wouldn't be there."

DJ Hero has reportedly been a "licensing nightmare," with rumors claiming that the effort will launch next summer with a turntable controller and a mash-up tracklist. Development is supposedly occurring at the Activision-owned FreeStyleGames.

Interesting! (http://blog.gameagenda.com/activision-wants-you-to-become-a-dj-hero)

Activision Wants You To Become A DJ Hero?

Activision has filed to protect the trademark “DJ Hero”, applying to “Computer game software and related instruction manual sold together as a unit; interactive video game programs; computer game discs; downloadable software for use in connection with computer games; video game controllers; Interactive video game comprised of a CD or DVD sold as a unit with a video game controller”.

While this isn’t proof that the game exists as an actual project, but it does give us an idea of what’s on Activision’s mind. I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more details soon.

Will the game give you points for acting busy, like how all "real" DJs in clubs frenetically press random buttons and switches so the patrons (and more importantly, the people paying him) don't realize that all the guy really did was press play four and a half minutes ago?

:)

:)theres more to dj'ing then just pressing buttons lol

if they do make a dj game hopefully it'll cover some of the actual techniques like counting beats per minute, use of eq'ing, beat matching and blending, scratching techniques, and flirting with a hot brunette all at the same time :cool:

if it's actually a DJ type game could be interesting or even if they emulate some simple live synth programming it could be cool but anything resembling the crapfest known as beatmania should never be attempted. I've been making electronic music for years and beatmania is just a sad sad illusion.

If it is too "sim" like, it could be too tough for the casuals that dominate this genre. However, a game that is realistic could also allow for a TON of creative game options, like the ability to mix any two songs together for a unique experience potentially everytime you play. This is especially true if they allow for improvisation as long as it is reasonably on beat.

that made me laugh as I used to think the same thing, but since my buddy started up his own club, and I've had the chance to hang out with the djs i've come to realize that it can be a pretty complicated process.

As for a dj game, this could only be cool if it were more sim like than guitar hero, as gh is pretty gay to anyone who has played the guitar before

You clearly have absolutely no idea how being DJ works if you're being serious.

Anyway as cool as the idea for DJ Hero sound this worries me that Activision is gonna start milking this cash cow for all it's worth. How long before we have "Contemporary Electric Folk Jug Band Hero"?

Doing live synth and drum programming like I do is complicated DJs sepend 2 minutes beat matching then 5 looking busy. I knew one guy who'd just keeping twisting his thumb and forefinger over the center pin. after his set I asked him why he was beat matching like that. he shrugged and said he hasn't thought of a better mime. This was a DJforums meetup and pretty much everyone except me did the same schtick. Back then I was using a cd turntable to give me some time to program the next song so even when I cut to a playback track I still had a major amount of work to be done. THat could be a game. DJ hero is likely going to be some turntablist game. My guess is the screen layout will look like a double version of gitarooman.

I'll have you know I take great pride in my DJing ignorance. And with that in mind, I'll stand by my original statement. Press play and look busy for 6 minutes.

Funny how when there's a receptive hottie near the DJ booth, all the sudden all those knobs, levers and half a headphone don't need constant attention anymore.......

My guess is the screen layout will look like a double version of gitarooman.

slightly OT - so what are the benefits of doing live synth & drum programming versus just playing pre-recorded stuff? I can understand doing live programming if you're doing a real concert, but why not just play pre-recorded stuff if your just DJ'ing for a club?

Will the game give you points for acting busy, like how all "real" DJs in clubs frenetically press random buttons and switches so the patrons (and more importantly, the people paying him) don't realize that all the guy really did was press play four and a half minutes ago?

:)

As someone that used to dj I can tell you that most "real" dj's generally will not play a full 4 minute track. I used to either transition or scratch out of a song by the 2nd hook. So that gives you roughly 1:30 to 2 minutes to cue up the next track, find the right downbeat and start matching while the current track is still playing...and its like that for a 2-3 hour set. Doesnt exactly allow for much acting time.

As for the game..eh. If you're curious enough just get some cheap used decks at your local music store along with some vinyl and go to town. Chicks will love it...

Interesting! (http://blog.gameagenda.com/activision-wants-you-to-become-a-dj-hero)

I for one have never liked the sound of an electric guitar or rock band music in general, so I've sat out on the latest music craze on consoles. For people like me (or those that like DJ-style music in general), this is great news if an announcement is made.

Many song genres not covered by Guitar Hero or Rock Band are instantly possible for a game like DJ Hero... hip-hop, rap, R&B, funk, soul, house, and maybe even jazz. Plus, anyone who has played Beatmania knows that the turntable is a minor part of the experience; if DJ Hero is similar to Konami's classic, buttons similar to large piano keys may be used for the main input on the controller. The piano is my favorite instrument so I hope that this is implemented.

In any case, I'm excited about this and will update this first post with any additional info I come across.

But will this game come with glow sticks?

I'll have you know I take great pride in my DJing ignorance. And with that in mind, I'll stand by my original statement. Press play and look busy for 6 minutes.

Funny how when there's a receptive hottie near the DJ booth, all the sudden all those knobs, levers and half a headphone don't need constant attention anymore.......

:D

I'm all in, as long as the game comes with the "Activision Half Headphone" that functions as your BT mic as well to communicate with the rest of your DJ squad. I'll bet they are going to differentiate the teams with blue glow-necklaces for one side and red glow-necklaces for the other.

Seriously, I'd be interested depending on the interface, of course. I don't think it would be much of a hit if the interface was four buttons, as in the old "Simon" game... (crap, did I just prove how old I am?? :eek: :confused: )

Interesting rumor (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170964) about the controls:

http://media.1up.com/media?id=3639810&type=lg.jpg

One such source told MTV Multiplayer back in September that the game was shaping up to be a "licensing nightmare," as it purportedly uses a soundtrack of mash-ups -- songs that are comprised by taking elements of two different songs and fusing them together. Before that, a different source gave a number of gameplay details to Kotaku, saying the game is played with a controller that resembles a simplified DJ deck (real-life DJ deck pictured above), with a scratch "platter," three sampling buttons, a crossfader, and a sound effects dial.

This is a sad fact. It's not really my favorite brand of music, but I worked on a concert shoot for the Zen Tour, and from my vantage point, I realized what a farce it can be. With the turntables elevated on the stage and obscured by the podium they were mounted on, one of the "premier DJ's" that was a highlight of the show didn't even have a record on the turntable half the time. He would just have his hand on the fader (not moving it) as the beat was ramping up, and then when the new beat kicked in, he let go of the fader on cue and danced around a bit. I felt the audience was really getting cheated. I'm not saying all DJ's do this, and obviously work went into the mix in order to create it, but faking it live is akin to lip-synching a concert without any choreography.

I have been a DJ both both Mobile (Weddings etc...) and also in Bars and Clubs for about 10 years....

I dont take offense to the game at all...It might be cool to plug your Ipod into the PS3 and be able to use those songs in DJ game like atmosphere...

I mean I dont know how well it will sell but you can get half decent DJ Control Surfaces that you can just plug your ipod into these days for less than 200 bucks...Same thing with Rock Band you can buy a decent rea Electronic Drum kit for around the same price as Rock Band....

Its just another way for a company to make money....the same way Musicians knock rock band is the same way DJ's will rip this...Its all because these DJ's took years to master their craft and take pride in it...Then some 30yr old virgin year old gets DJ Hero or whatever its called and thinks hes Tiesto or something....

hahah I think I am more excited for this thread than going back to playing FC2 and LBP

You clearly have absolutely no idea how being DJ works if you're being serious.

I used to know how to mix records (well, I still do I guess) but I haven't touched a record in almost like 10 years. Yes, it is WAY harder then just pressing a button. Although to be fair, a lot of club DJs nowadays do just press a button.

It seems that ActiBlizz has confirmed a 2009 release: (http://ps3.qj.net/ActiBliz-boss-finally-confirms-DJ-Hero-out-this-year/pg/49/aid/128542)

For so long now, it's been rumored about.

Easier to buy but tougher to use. The mass market likes the hand-holding these games offer.

Since DJ Hero targets an entirely different (yet popular) music genre than the other two popular franchises, I see no reason why it won't do reasonably well. How many guitars can they expect people to buy every year?

jremy510
01-30-09, 10:29 PM
I would be less skeptical of this if it was coming from Harmonix. I don't think Activision has the chops to actually pull of something original with rhythm games. I mean, look what happened with Guitar Hero...

You’ll be able to plug a guitar into DJ Hero and play along with the game’s turntable, Activision Blizzard just confirmed in its Q1 earnings call.

The company said that 50 percent of likely buyers for the game are not currently Guitar Hero owners.

The game itself is being put together in the UK, and will release at the end of this year.

I dont expect this game to do well at all.

joeblow
05-11-09, 09:52 PM
Well maybe their research tells them that casuals DON'T want a full mixer board... and casuals is the mega market companies go after in music games. The fact that it is all about R&B, rap, hip-house, etc. means that there will be a lot of people who buy it for the music genres not offered with GH/RB alone. Let's wait until we know how it plays before we judge it... it may have some of the bells and whistles you guys are looking for when it is fully shown.

I'm worried about the market too. All my hippity hop buddies make fun of GH and RB so they will not play this because they are too cool. What do they know, I keep telling them Phillies ruin the flavor of good chronic but they don't listen the stubborn bastards. Ok, I'm putting down the pipe now.

confidenceman
05-12-09, 01:37 PM
Newsflash: our age group is not the target audience. :cool:

Unlike RB and GH, this game doesn't have a similarly broad appeal. This is more in line with earlier rhythm games that targeted specific audiences (DDR, Taiko Drum Master, GH1&2, and so on). It doesn't have to be the same runaway hit that RB is in order to do well.

Personally, I'm stoked for this, but I can understand if others here aren't. It's a much more specific audience.

Also: I'm sure there will be faders etc. As I said, you just can't see them in those pics. I'm guessing that the controller is still a prototype and they haven't finalized how they'll do the faders and stuff, but they're pretty sure what the rest of the table will look like.

joeblow
05-18-09, 08:09 PM
Looks like the controller complaints were premature. ign.com (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/984/984227p1.html) has a full preview:

It would be cool if the game actually let you mix your own MP3's and set-up different crates of music. For example, you can have a crate filled with just hip hop joints and another crate filled with party rockers. Gameplay, you mix in a club environment and if your set sucks the crowd starts leaving the dance floor, if your set is off the hook the crowd rocks. The game could also have some dj competition at some car show or something.

I dunno maybe what I described is what the gameplay is like. I haven't read the details of the game and I'll probably never play it.

So Activision decides to explain why DJ Hero is as high as $180 in some regions:

We don't comment on our product pricing strategies. However, we believe that DJ Hero will provide tremendous value for our consumers by delivering an all-new interactive music experience with over 100 individual songs that are highlighted in over 80 unique mixes, a wide variety of music from some of the biggest artists including Jay-Z, Eminem, Benny Benassi, Gwen Stefani and Black Eyed Peas among others.

Didn't Sony say the same thing about the PS3's price?

confidenceman
07-04-09, 01:48 PM
The high price makes you wonder how much less Activision already expects DJ Hero to sell compared to GH3. :rolleyes:

The "value" proposition doesn't make as much sense as it did in the PS3's case. What does DJ Hero offer that GH3 didn't? 80 songs compared to 60? That's a tough sell.

Activision's nuts if they think people are gonna line up to pay $120 for this thing, especially given the crazy discounts we have seen this year on the GHWT bundles. That game might have sold well but clearly not nearly as many as Activision thought (I never saw clearance bundles of GH3 6 months after release).

My guess is, May of 2010 there will be stacks of these things going for $69.99. I might pick one up then.

That game might have sold well but clearly not nearly as many as Activision thought (I never saw clearance bundles of GH3 6 months after release).Which is why I think DJ Hero is going to retail at such a high price. I'm guessing Activision recognizes it's not going to sell as well, so they're marking it up as high as they can get away with. They'll milk as much initial profit as they can through the holidays before they selling it for a more reasonable price (sort of like Sony and the PSP Go). It'll probably sell for ~$100 throughout most of 2010. Don't expect it to hit anything close to $69 until 2011, even if it sells like ****.

Man, I'm seriously on the fence with this one. First, there is the issue of price. It may be cheaper to hire a real DJ to mix these songs in person than it is to buy this game.

Secondly, while I'm liking a lot of the tracks they plan to ship with this (unlike 99% of the GH/RB tracks), I am not feeling the custom mixes that much. Why must every track be two songs mixed together? I want to enjoy songs by themselves if I wish.

So after listening to about a dozen mixes, I was ready to write off this game.... but then they announced eleven Daft Punk mixes, including this awesome performance. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxGH7ga1wgE) If I have to play mixes, Daft Punk might be enough to get me to open my wallet. I love the stuff that that do, like this classic video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0HSD_i2DvA).

I really don't know... maybe I'll wait until I see a deal that I can't resist (i.e. $80). Anyway, here's a list of the known songs and mixes:

The full tracklist of 93 song combinations is updated into the first post. I'm really not feeling this game any more until they allow you to play songs solo without their pre-defined mixes. Maybe the revealed DJH2 (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176285) next year will make it happen.

Well, pre-ordered today, but just checking my pre-order EB accidently did it for 360. Idiots!

Anyways, the cost for this thing in Canada I think was $249 for the Renegade Edition which is supposed to give the DRE/Eminem stuff.

I am hoping that they allow single song play even if it is in the training mode.

One thing I read is that you can have 2 Turntables hooked up or even 1 turntable and a guitar.

Anyone one else read this?

They probably thought they'd make more $$$ by having the mixes since they'd all be unique only to the game and can't be heard anywhere else. However, they didn't realize that not everyone wants 100% mixes.

I like a lot of the songs listed, but not mashed together. Just because I like peanut butter and I like bananas doesn't mean I like peanut butter and banana sandwiches. :(

Once for each song in the mix, and another for the person credited with the mix.

But that still doesn't justify the ridiculous price tag. Especially knowing that Activision's MO with music games is to avoid DLC and sell full discs instead at $60 a pop. That's close to $200 for one controller and two discs worth of songs. No sir. No thank you.

No, "Mashups" are a not central to DJ culture. Yes, DJ-ing is based on combining elements from existing music, but that doesn't make it a "mashup." At all.

I guess you didn't read the last part where i said, beat matching and playing another song wouldn't make a fun game. Think I know a bit more about Djing than you do. A bit as in I know infinitely more than you'll ever know. Mashing, as better known as sampling is how you create new music out out turntables, FYI.

I bought it yesterday. I know a bunch of people have been dogging this game for months...but for me, I had a ball playing it. The mixes sound really good and it is extremely easy to get caught up playing it - two hours flew by without me knowing it. The turntable doesn't feel cheap (to me) and my 6 yr old daughter had a blast screaming out "Yo,Yo,Yo" over the mike while I was cuttin' it up!

I never bought any of the GH/RB games...and with this, I don't feel like I've missed out on anything. I'm not knocking the others, but I think that DJ Hero has the potential to be special, also.

Hope that helps...

Got the game yesterday for PS3, but switched it for the "other" version just because some of my friends were getting it on the other system.

The game is a lot of fun and the music mixes are pretty good. This will make another good party game to have when you have friends over with drinks.

The only major complaint is that while it allows you to have 2 turntables connected, it would of been nice if they allowed to play 2 different set of notes like GH and RB where each person that is locally connected plays different notes.

Guess that will come in the next release.

I definitely would recommend it.

I believe another company is making a turntable based game as well. My biggest problem is I am running out of space for all this stuff.

BTW: Get the Renegade Edition. The Eminem and Jay-Z CD's aren't worth it at all, but the case is sturdy and the turntable seems much better built than the regular edition.

I passed on it for now for several reasons....

- There is no way to play songs that aren't mixed together.
- The price tag is way too high
- I'm caught up in more games than I can play right now

What I plan to do, if I still have interest in it later, is wait until DJH 2 is announced and see if I'll wait for its new features or simply buy the current game at a lowered price. I really want to play me some Daft Punk, so I might eventually cave in to get my first music game since PS1 Beatmania.

For those who held out because of the crazy high price, it's now $80 at Best Buy. (http://www.pcworld.com/article/189978/dj_hero_bundle_for_playstation_3_80.html)

I figure I'll wait until E3 or so and see what DJH2 will be all about. Hopefully they de-couple the songs in it and I'll get it day one. I'd rather make my own mixes (or no mixes at all) rather than play pre-decided mixes. Beatmania-style gameplay with good songs for a change is the minimum they should've offered to begin with.

Patience payed off; the game was only $20 this week at TrU and a ton of people jumped in on the deal. I'm now officially in the DJ Hero club. :)

I'm pretty happy with it I have to say. Even though I still don't care for mashups as the only way to enjoy a cut (at least let me choose the two songs I want to mash together), there are quite a few tracks that are really good. I was able to unlock all of the songs and venues in one morning, so it doesn't take long to get to play whatever you want.

I'd say 15% of them are top tier (can't get enough of Daft Punk), another 30% are enjoyable to play, with 40% I can take it or leave it, and the remaining 15% is absolute garbage. I include in that garbage list almost all of the rock guitar cuts. Blah. And whoever made that Little Richard Tutti Frutti track should be shot.

Props to the design team for great play mechanics. Most of the things you are asked to do are pretty good at adding to the fake experience of DJ'ing. Sure, its nowhere near sim quality, but the basic feel is there.

Crossfading in particular works well, but I wish you could stop the slider more easily right in the middle. The effects knob seemed gimmicky at first, but if you know the song you are going to play and match it up with the right samples, it can at times sound pretty good. I'll have to check to see if sample volume can be turned down since it is too loud at default.

Euphoria is a great game play feature. It allows you to strategically coast through tough crossfading sections while spiking your score. However, I wish it were designed to be a better aesthetic feature. When you activate euphoria, the music really starts pumping and the crowd starts going crazy. Aesthetically, the natural spot to do that in a lot of songs is just as you transition from one major section of music to the next. You aren't rewarded for doing that though, so it ends up being used in weird places. I don't really go for high scores, so I mostly use it when I can in places that adds more to the hype of the performance.

Rewind is an awful feature though. The tracks are flowing smoothly and then an ugly rewind sound interrupts and you replay part of the track for a higher score. It is all off rhythm and adds nothing to the aesthetics. If I were in the crowd and heard a DJ do that several times, I'd walk off the floor until he left. It's a good thing it is optional since I never use it.

Scratching is pretty fun, but I think it is over used. Hopefully DJH2 has more button play next time in the way Beatmania focused on it. That would add to the variety of things you do from song to song.

Overall, "normal" is not too difficult once you know the controls. I was soon 5-staring a lot of songs on my first time with them once I got better. Taking a look at the two harder difficulties, I like that the music gets harder not just by speeding up the note track and adding extra inputs (which it does) - the game also adds trickier game play elements like fader spikes and direction focused scratching that the Normal difficulty does not deal with. Longevity should not be an issue.

Graphically the game is ok looking for a multi-platform title. Not great, but not awful either. There aren't many multiplayer features, but for solo DJers it does a good job at what it is supposed to do. Activision was insane debuting this game at $120 (or $200 for the deluxe kit). Find it at a much lower price and it is a fun experience worth playing if you like club music.

I see the tracklist for DJH2 is out, and there are MANY more quality songs being used compared to the first. I may even pick the disc up if at least half of the mashups are decent, seeing as I now have the turntable. With that said, the first is still recommended, and I hope the tracks can be merged with DJH2.

Yeah, that is if the mashups are done well. Some of the songs in DJH1 were great, but they were kinda screwed up from by the DJ who mixed it together poorly.

Still I like how they are expanding the type of music they are using, but expanding the right direction. They aren't trying to get GH players to get this at all, so I'm not really seeing any metal guitar crap like last time. Instead, there's a greater emphasis on electric club mixes with DJs like Tiësto and The Prodigy in there. DJH2 is also a lot more modern in the artists/songs they went out to get. I still see some old school stuff in there, but not nearly as much as current pop/hip-hop acts.

There are a couple of track omissions from the acts that made it into this game that would've been cool if they made it. For instance, I really like Red Alert from Basement Jaxx. And of course everyone will have groups and performers they'd like to have seen (A Tribe Called Quest is my main hope for DJH3). What's here though looks really good.

Too bad its the last time we see the list unmixed. Another feature I want to see in DJH3 is a chance to play the songs unmixed as a separate mode. It'd be more like Beatmania, and would likely drive sales even more since you can enjoy playing songs as they were originally recorded like you can with GH and RB.

I liked DJ Hero, but did not put nearly enough time into it. So I'll probably get into it and pick up #2 on the cheap.

The only songs I truly did not like in DJ Hero were the guitar mixes. They were all terrible.

:)

I listened to the ten second previews of each guitar cut in the selection menu and decided never to play any of them. Thankfully that bad idea is gone in DJH2.

I've been playing DJH for almost a month now I suppose, working my way through the hardest difficulty. It really is a lot of fun, and there are more decent mixes than I first thought. I actually like Hollerback Girl now after jamming through a few of the mixes that has it. This is despite being annoyed by the song before playing this game. Hopefully there is a merge option in DJH2 so I can eventually create my own setlist that draws from both releases.

Anyone play the demo for DJ Hero 2 yet?

I bought the first one, liked it, but was never crazy about it.

....but the demo for the second one is awesome IMO.

The 'freestyle' segments of the mixing make the game feel more convincing overall. My freestyle segments sound kinda terrible, but it does feel cool to have more control over the mixes.

It feels like they finally got the experience right with DJ Hero 2. It's a more engaging experience, but enough of it is 'automated' to keep the mixes sounding good.

The mixes seem like they're much higher quality too, and it seems like there's more variety in the setlist. But if the first game is any indication (where there were a handful of great mixes, and a lot of terrible ones), we won't really know until we spend more time with the actual game.

I played the tutorial and both mixes once in the demo and then deleted it. I don't want to overdo them before the next release comes out, and I am still having fun with the first game.

I like the new freestyle techniques for the most part; all three add their own flavor to the mixes. I particularly like the cross-fade free style the most and wish you could have a free style mode option where the entire mix allows you to use the cross-fader when you wanted.

A couple of things though; while I like that samples are customized to each mash up this time instead of the clunky way it's handled in the first game, I forgot to check if each song has a list to choose from, or are you simply freestyle sampling to your own beat. If you don't get to select samples at all, it kinda becomes nothing more than (optionally) hitting another note when they show up - that's a step backwards with sampling, but I have to verify.

Also, I'm not a big scratch guy to begin with, but it would've been better if freestyling scratching could be affected by combining it with the cross-fader for more unique scratch effects (i.e. like real life DJing). Right now, they give you their own two scratch sounds per freestyle section (turntable up or down) when it could've been a lot more.

These aren't huge complaints though. The main setlist is MUCH improved (on paper) than the first game, but as you say we won't know for sure until it comes out. I'm just happy they didn't force a new turntable purchase to play the sequel. I'm getting this day one.

BTW, do you plan to rock the mic in this release? I may try once or twice, but for some reason it is more fun to me to play with the beats than it is to sing/rap the lyrics.

I like their approach to the samples this time around. The cookie cutter samples that they provided in the first one never fit into the mix...they sounded so awkward that there was no motivation to utilize them. Given that the samples in DJ Hero 2 are actually sampled from the two tracks in the mix, they actually feel like legitimate parts of the mix, and you really feel like you're adding something to the pre-mixed track. (same reason the freestyle scratches and crossfades are so enjoyable this time around too)

I don't think you'll have the option to choose the samples for each song, however. It'd be pretty cumbersome to have to do so, and it seems there are multiple samples per mix, and the samples they do provide fit into the part of the mix they come up in. (ie Lady Gaga's 'ga ga' sample during her vocal section). Works out better this way I think...again because the samples 'fit' into the section of the mix they come up in.

I agree that they should have combined the freestyle scratching with the freestyle cross-fading. Having not played through the tutorials, I was actually trying to combine the two on my first run.....it feels intuitive enough that you would think that's what you're supposed to do. I have a feeling you'll see them combined in the inevitble DJ Hero 3 next year.

I have no intention to ever pick up the mic myself, but my wife, who has real vocal talent and used to be the lead vocalist in a girl band, probably will.

Will the game give you points for acting busy, like how all "real" DJs in clubs frenetically press random buttons and switches so the patrons (and more importantly, the people paying him) don't realize that all the guy really did was press play four and a half minutes ago?

:)

Well, after a good friend of mine told me about Target's recent $30 DJ Hero sale, I'm the owner of this game.

Never thought I'd buy into it, but it's actually a lot of fun.

Should be pretty funny to goof around with during our get togethers as well.

Anyone pick up DJ Hero 2 yet? It looks pretty nice.

The sequel releases tomorrow. Since GT5 was delayed, I'll use my $20 discount on this game at KMart before it expires. I'm looking forward to it since the first one has been a lot more fun than I expected. Which mixes are your favorite so far in the first game?

The ability to freestyle more in the sequel definitely makes it very intriguing to me.

I've barely scratched (pun intended) the surface of the first game, so I'm hoping DJ Hero 1 will keep me occupied until the price on 2 comes down.

Having picked up a DJH2 disc, here are my early impressions of the sequel.

Gameplay-wise, playing the role of a DJ in this release is 90% the same as the first one. If you loved the first one, you'll love the second. If you hated the gameplay style of the DJH, there's nothing significant enough to make you enjoy DJH2. As a fan of the first game (once the price came WAY down), so far I really, really like what they've done with this title.

As mentioned before, the newest gameplay features include being required to hold note presses/directional scratching for a period of time as well as freestyle cross-fading/sampling/scratching. There is also an expanded role for singers/rappers to pick up the mic during performances, but this mode is junk and it should've been left out like the guitar sets in the first game (which are all gone BTW).

The problem with the singing/rapping is that even if you know the song, because all cuts are Frankenstien-spliced mashups, you have no sense of what to sing and when, let alone how to sing it since the words might be overly processed with DJ effects at some points (like scratch repeats).

Unfortunately for the game, it is because of the singing/rap feature that pretty much every cut I've heard so far in DJH2 have a VERY strong singing/rap component. In the first game, a ton of songs were mostly instrumental beats, which adds a nice variety to the mashups that did feature voice. So a pretty much worthless game mode affected the entire game which is too bad.

That about sums up my most negative thoughts of DJH2. Everything else is great. Clearly the developer became aware of some of the presentation and interface issues, so the look and interaction with this sequel is a very nice improvement over the first game. The menu system is a lot cleaner, so you aren't trudging through worthless boxes of themed collections that you only played once just to get to the quick select option. The calibration is more detailed and refined, and there is a lot more integrated leaderboard/online multiplayer activity than the first offered. I haven't tried online play yet, but there are quite few more vs. options than before to keep it interesting.

There is a campaign "Empire" mode that I here is pretty standard... there is no major storyline to go through as you go from club to club, battling the computer to unlock characters, gear, and more mashups. I'll get around to playing it, but I already enjoy simple custom setlists to care about it too much.

With the custom lists, they have tweaked it so that A} you can go through more than eight songs in one session (I don't know the limit), and B} the transition from one cut to the next is VERY fast unlike the first game. I like this way better because you more naturally flow from song to song with no break in between for mega-mega mixes. You can now even randomize the song order before you start if you wish.

Once the main game begins, you immediately notice the new graphic style and aesthetics of DJH2. So far the characters I have unlocked are from the first game, but they are a lot more vibrantly detailed with a more subdued design. Even the dancing girls in the few venues I've played are less bootylicious than they were in DJH.

As you play a mix, the camera once again tries to keep the hype going by showing clips of your DJ character in action and the dancers, but this time you see a lot more close ups of the dancing crowd. So far, one thing the first did better with the camera work than DJH2 is how it would zoom in on your DJ during key parts of a song where they'd show off with some cool custom animation (like pumping their fist in the air in synch with a song's hook or doing the robot or raising the roof). You'd also see something special when you hit the Euphoria key which really pumped up the crowd. In DJH2 so far, I'm not getting that vibe. There are a lot of animations, but I've yet to see a special section of a song trigger a really unique sequence, and hitting the Euphoria key doesn't seem to trigger anything unique either.

I played on Hard difficulty but was pretty easily 5-starring whatever I tried. It seems as if Hard isn't as hard as before, but maybe it's because I'm decent playing Expert in the first game. I tried Expert briefly and one thing it does for some song is to make the notes fly down REALLY fast so you have to react much more quickly. It seems as if it might be a tad harder than before - we'll see.

Other things I noticed about the game play... Euphoria triggers last a longer time it seems, and there are custom samples for each song so you don't have to play generic ones anymore. I'm neutral on this change since while you don't have misplaced sounds in cuts anymore, I'd still like there to be several custom samples per song to select from. Rewind is still in the game, but you have to spin the TT much faster to trigger it. I still hate the aesthetics of this feature since it completely drops the beat with a goofy sound FX and replays a section. I'll continue to ignore it like I did in the first game since I don't care abought high scores.

I love the new features, especially the freestyle cross-fading. This makes any mashup sound different from the last time you played it depending on how you play around with it. It's a very significant improvement for adding to the illusion that you are really DJing. Freestyle scratching is good in that can just NOT scratch at all if I want to (I'm not a major fan of it in all songs), but if you want custom scratching high scores you will want to press->scratch->RELEASE->press->scratch etc. instead of just hold the scratch button the entire time.

Last but certainly not least, the music. This makes or breaks any game, which is particulary true for the DJH series since they don't put out hardly any DLC mixes to stock up on (and only forced bundles so far). More DLC is said to be a future improvement, but what is on the disc so far is TOP TIER! I am happy to say that after briefly listening to each of the early uinlocked mashups, there was maybe only two or three songs that I immediately didn't like. In the first game, there are well over a dozen songs or more that I despised and avoided so this is a tremendous improvement.

The focus though has switched a bit. As mentioned before a lot of it is vocal heavy but the actual songs are very much in line with what you'd expect from a game revolving around the club scene. In the first game, way too many mashups were more technical than danceable, but that's changed dramatically in DJH2. Besides some current stuff from Lady GaGa and the like, most of the stuff are classics pulled from the 90s and 00s, so if you ever spent time in dance halls back in the day, you will be impressed. The full list in in the first post of this thread, but I'll mention a few here that are instant favorites of mine so far (and I haven't even unlocked all of the tunes yet):

* Nelly - "Hot In Herre" Mixed With Warren G feat. Nate Dogg - "Regulate"
* Salt N Pepa - "Push It" Mixed With Afrika Bambaataa and The Soul Sonic Force - "Planet Rock"
* Pussycat Dolls ft. Busta Rhymes - "Don't Cha" Mixed With Pitbull - "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)"
* The Prodigy - "Firestarter" (Remix by FSG)
* Soulja Boy Tell 'Em - "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" Mixed With Chamillionaire - "Ridin'"
* Estelle ft. Kanye West - "American Boy" Mixed With Chic - "Good Times"

No doubt I'll add quite a few more down the line. The quality of the song selections coupled with the fact that overall (so far) they seem to be mixed much more smoothly on average makes this game worth picking up at full price.

If I give the first game a 8.75 after playing it a ton, so far I'd give the second one a 9.5 based on early impressions. I hope they allow us to add the mixes from the first game, then it'd be pretty much perfect IMHO until DJH3 - where I hope they FINALLY let us mix any two songs that we want to mash together.

I'll definitely be picking this up. I've lapsed in my rhythm game playing over the past couple of years (totally burned out), but I think this game is the excuse I needed to get back into it.

The Rock Band games are great party games, but sometimes I just want a pared-down, more focused experience. I was hooked by the overall concept of the first DJ Hero, but the song list really turned me off. But DJ Hero 2 finally looks like my ideal rhythm game. Hopefully I'll be firing the game up later today!

The problem with the first game's setlist is that they tried to do too much to appeal to different groups. The guitar songs were terrible, but they also added technical sections to some mixes that would appeal to high-level Beatmania players. Those kind of songs weren't enjoyable to listen to because the flow was to erratic (i.e. stuff by the Scratch Perverts). Here in DJH2, smooth rhythm and flow were given more importance in their selections so a lot more mixes have that infectious dancing/head-bopping vibe that you'd expect to hear in a good club.

Ars Technia (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/reviews/2010/10/dj-hero-2-improves-virtual-wheels-of-steel-is-a-must-buy.ars)also loves this sequel, and they have a nice summary of the multiplayer modes that I glossed over in my write-up:

There is also an array of multiplayer modes that make two-player mixing much more fun; this is why we linked to the "Party Bundle" of two turntables and a microphone in our "buy it now" link. In Star Battle you're simply competing to get the most stars by scoring the most points, and Checkpoint mode has you competing for a high score during certain sections of each song. Whoever wins the most checkpoints wins the round. DJ Battle is much like Checkpoint except the song is designed for multiplayer, with sections that feature call and response gameplay. Yes, we're pretending to be battling DJs when we play this mode, but this is still fun, leading to some heated rivalries between friends.

Accumulator is a neat mode where you hit the Euphoria button (think Star Power) on the turntable when you have a note streak going to bank the points. The higher your note streak, the more you can bank, but the longer you wait, the greater your chance of losing the streak altogether. This is a fun, tense mode that really helps you tune your skills. Streak is a similar mode except you're both competing to get to the highest single streak.

If you don't have anyone to play with locally you can use the "Hero Feed" feature to issue challenges online and to check how you stack up against your friends.

Wow. Great game. Spent a chunk of time last night playing. Far, far, far better music than the prior game. These don't feel like novelty "mix-ups" as much as they feel like genuine, listenable dance mixes. Much more organic and natural.

I'm still getting a feel for the many unique mechanics in DJ Hero 2 after many hundreds of hours spent with Guitar Hero/Rock Band. But it really feels like something completely different, in a good way.

This is the game the first one should have been, and for the curious among you, don't let the Activision name and "Hero" brand turn you off. This is worlds better than any post-Harmonix Guitar Hero game. A definite must for any music/rhythm game fan (past or present).

I'd say yeah. I bought it a few months ago for half that but have put at least 25 hours or so into it. Even though I have DJH2 now, I'll keep playing DJH because I like quite a few of the mixes (and using the Daft Punk characters). Hopefully they allow us to merge the two games sometime down the road.

~~~
A few more observations about the sequel...
You can have a customized det list of up to 20 mixes (it was 8 max in the first one). Considering you get no break in between songs anymore, I imagine that someone playing 20 Expert-level cuts will be feeling it in their scratching arm when they finish.
I've started Empire mode just to unlock everything. As I mentioned before, Hard doesn't seem as hard as before - I'm almost halfway through it and have gotten 5-stars on my first try with these mixes except for one. I like the boss battle mode scenes though.
You seem to be able to do the multiplayer modes against the CPU.
Also, I notice that the effects knob doesn't distort the songs as dramatically in a lot of the sections as it did in the first game. The effect is more subtle, so the overall sound is better IMHO.
Seemed like a good chance for us to give the game a shot without major outlay.Considering the new game bundle costs $100 with the game (priced alone at $60) and a turntable, I'd say yes. So, for the same price as the new bundle you could get both games and a turntable.
I wasn't a big fan of the first game. Put a few hours into it and I lost interest. I may come back to it now that I have my own peripheral, but after seeing the improvements in DJ Hero 2 (musically and mechanically), I'm not sure I will.
i'm still loving this game quite a bit, but a few adjustments should be made to my early impressions.
For one, now that I've almost unlocked all of the songs I can say that there are a few more clunkers than I thought as well as some non-danceable "maze" tracks. I guess they buried them in the franchise mode, some of which you can't select in Quick Play. Still, the bad stuff isn't as numerous or as bad as the ones I hated in DJH1, and the maze tracks are there to please those who love a brutal challenge. The new play mechanics definitely make things a bit tougher than before with some tracks.
Hard difficulty is actually about right I found. Initially, the songs I played at first were some of the easier Hard mixes, but there are tougher ones in there for sure. I ended up 5-starring most of the songs the first try in Empire mode, with about eight 4-stars and one 3-star (Scratch Perverts "Galvanize" remix). I'll likely stick with Expert from now on to keep the challenge going.
Also, for any of you getting this to play with younger players I mentioned that the sequel toned down the sexy style of the dancers and DJs from the first, but didn't mention that because all songs have a heavy amount of lyrics that the game's number of sexually suggestive vocal tracks have really spiked up as a result.
Lastly, I hear rumors that the developer said that DJH tracks will be importable in the next patch. Good news if true!
I'd put the number of "clunkers" about on par with what was in GH2, but percentage-wise it's still better than most other music games. I'm really impressed and having loads of fun.
As great as the Rock Band series is, it's really its own thing, and it's so big with so many instruments, that it's not a good pick-up-and-play game anymore. But DJ Hero 2 reminds me a lot of the first two Guitar Hero games in how well-suited it is to just simply playing.
Now, I just gotta get my PS3 up and running again so I can keep playing. Damn YLOD.
Sorry to hear about your machine. Hopefully it gets taken care of quickly.
I just got done having the most unbelievably great time I've ever had playing a song in a rhythm game. "Get Low" vs. "In Da Club" on expert is everything I like about this sequel rolled into one mix.
For one you already have a top music cut with 50 Cent's mega-popular song, but this is a case where the mix is even better than the original by itself. Also, the challenging note patterns they came up with on expert has a fair but challenging logic to it that really puts you in the zone as if you are really making the music happening yourself.
It's hard to explain what I mean, but getting 89% notes hit on my first try was incredibly satisfying, and the mash-up sounds so good I was grinning and rocking my head the entire time. Ha, as much as I love good sound FX in Blu-ray action movies, nothing makes me appreciate the deep bass in my audio setup more than this game. ;)
The first DLC pack for the sequel has been released under the title Hit Makers Mix Pack:
"OMG (Beat Juggle)" Usher featuring Will.I.Am Remix
"Umbrella" Rihanna vs. "Let's Get It On" Marvin Gaye
"Shutterbugg" Big Boi featuring Cutty vs. "Return of the Mack" Mark Morrison
Like DJH, you have to buy the full pack instead picking and choosing individual cuts. So far, I've passed on all DLC in the first game since I'd have to really like all three to want to get it.
A few more thoughts on DJH2. Once you get all the stars you get all of the special characters unlocked along with outfits. I like the options there, but unfortunately outside of their into and closing motions they all seem to use the same animation moves as they DJ. The song dictates the action for all characters I think (ex. in the Soulja Boy remix all characters point at the camera when it sings "Yoooooou!!!"). In DJH1 there were less DJs but more unique motion sets.
One thing I didn't notice before is that some decks have special stats that affect gameplay, like 2x Euphoria, rewind going back twice as far, extra points for scratching, etc. I'll bet that screws up the leaderboards if they are allowed for that, but I am digging the expert deck that makes the notes stream twice as fast.
This deck essentially gives you twice as many difficulty settings to have fun with. For instance, if Expert songs are too congested for you and Hard is too easy, sing the turbo deck makes the Hard songs a bit tougher than before while not being as difficult as Expert. Give it a try to see if you like it.
Leaderboards are totally wonky and unclear. Quick play is different from tour mode is different from online play. Some allow for special decks, and some don't. The friends challenges and friends leaderboards (during quick play and during tour mode) are also totally bizarre.
Another design issue I've discovered is the way scoring works in all difficulty levels. It's surprisingly easy to get a full five stars at any level, even with not a lot of experience. Changes the challenge to leaderboard competitions, but since those are wonky, it kind of kills the game's long-term appeal.
It sounds like small stuff, but it's exactly those details that prevent this from being a game I keep playing for the long haul.
You're right from a general gaming standpoint (and yes, 5 stars is too easy). However the game remains fun for me because I don't take leaderboards/stars, etc. too seriously to begin with. I play it a lot because I like a lot of the mixes.
As I mentioned earlier, for both games I never do rewinds because I think it disrupts the aesthetic flow of a mix, and you can't get high scores without using rewind a lot. I also usually trigger Euphoria at a point of in a song that makes sense for trying to amp up the crowd instead of always reserving it for cross-fade / cross-spike sections. So it can still be a lot of fun if you don't play it as a game, as wierd as that sounds.
Kinda sad, but DJ Hero franchise development (as well as Guitar Hero development) is no more. (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2011/02/activision-dropping-new-downloads-for-guitar-hero-dj-hero/1) Activision is getting out of the gaming music biz, and has already started dumping staff related to the genre.
There will be no more new DLC packs after this month, and I doubt they'll ever merge the two soundtracks for both games into one. Oh well, it was pretty cool while it lasted.
EDIT:
The three main guys behind Freestyle Games (the DJ Hero team) says that final decisions about their future are still up in the air. (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/32962/Freestyle_Games_Actively_Working_With_Activision_On_Studios_ Future.php)Hopefully they can support the franchise awhile with DLC even if new, full titles don't come out.
