ive read the other similar posts on here.. but dont think any answered my questions.
For my surround sound its going optical to my PS3.. ive noticed that the games sound are coming out all my speakers..(noticed it on Ratchet) i can see all the speakers lit on my av display.
Now when i play a movie it just comes out 2 speakers, the av display shows left and right speakers. What am i doing wrong? i tried going through the movie menu and selecting the different audio options.. but from what i remember it didnt change anything.. still only picking up two speakers.

Any word on this issue? I plan to purchase a PS3 and have to use the optical out as well, so this issue intrigues me. Does anyone else have this problem?

I am not in front of the system, so cannot be certain of the location, but in system settings>audio or sound, I recall there being an option for bitstream or PCM, make sure the optical setting is bitstream.

Thats the problem. Apparently his AVR doesnt like the 2ch PCM the PS3 puts out via optical. Changing the option for movie output (under DVD options in the XMB) to bitstream should take care of this problem.

Ill check this out when i get home.. thanks. I thought i read up on it and changed it to how everyone was saying it should be. Not to start anything but I Wish it was more like the Xbox 360 everything worked right away.. seems like with the PS3 you have to go through all the settings to set everything up.

So you'd rather have less options instead of doing a bit of research and setting something up for the best possible outcome in your situation?

Don't get me wrong.. i like my things set up the right way, even if i had to do it. I was just saying. 360 automaticly had everything set up perfect. I got HDMI sound out of my TV speakers, Opitcal through Surround Sound, coming out all the speakers. I didnt have to mess with it. I was just kinda surpised you had to go through all the options on the PS3 to tweak it.

Ok, i switch the optical to bitstream and it didnt work. so i started to get a little fustrated but then i check the movie and 6.1 was selected.. changed it to 5.1 and all the speakers lit up. thanks for the help guys.

Well, the PS3 has tons of settings for different things so you might want to look through them real quick before you start making threads.

It gives you a choice on different things but it can't read your mind into which settings you'd prefer.

I believe the default is setup for HDMI/PCM on audio. Probably the reason you had to change the settings to optical/bitstream.

Also the 360 can't do proper HDMI sound(ie Hidef audio), thus the need for more configuration options on the PS3

Its just the opposite for me I tried bitstream and it wouldnt work, switched to pcm and it works great.

Also there are different setting for games and BR, make sure they are both set to optical and not hdmi..I am hoping that a future update will allow both cause it kinda sucks it has to be one or the other

I thought you could only get 2 channel PCM out of optical.

Your getting 5.1 channels?

Your getting 5.1 channels? You're correct. Optical only passes 2-channel PCM. You have to switch to bitstream to get the 5.1 formats. The AVR is probably just matrixing PCM to 5.1.
