For owners of the PMS CII 3800, this past weekend I had a very interesting conversation with a fellow disgruntled owner who is considering legal action. Has anyone else done or considered this, whether in connection with the notorious 3800 or otherwise? I wonder if we couldn't get class certification.

I've had a number of problems with my CII (well documented in other threads), but the specific issue that this gentleman is pursuing is the implementation of the media player. I believe that he is claiming a violation of the implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose; i.e., that PMS sold the 3800 for a premium over the 3300 because, among other things, it could function as a media player and, as such, consumers could be expected to buy it intending to use it for that purpose. I don't know if this is a good legal argument, but that's what he is pursuing.

Apart from the occasional lockup the Mediaplayer on my 3800 is working fine.
The only thing that is a bit circumstancial is that some people claim the VPS3800 was also annouced to play Xvid and WMV9. But I cannot find anything that would indicate that, other than the fact that the Pixel Magic HD Mediabox MB200 on which the Crystalio Media Player is probably based, will play them. And the fact that Pixel Magic Support has written on the Pixel Magic forum that due to technical difficulties these formats will not be implemented on the VPS3800.
I think what probably happened is that PMS originally planned to make the VPS3800 Mediaplayer the same as the MB200, and later found out (after the VPS3800 specs where made public) that they could not reliably(!) make it work. Mind you the Sigma 862x processor on which the mediaplayer is based, is also used for the Crystalio's OSD.
So is it really that a big problem that format like XVID and WMV9 will not play on the VPS3800. COME ON ! You buy the VPS3800 to gain overall picture quality, and then you are going to play some Xvid rip !?
The only thing that I find very disturbing is the fact that many users have reported problems with 2.35 in combination with 24p and problems with black flashes on HDMI based sources, and although these problems have been reported for quite some time, PMS 'seems' not to do anything to resolve them. They say they are working on new firmware, but in reality nothing has been released since august (6 months !)
On the positive side. The internal mediaplayer is still the best source I have, and is given me a much sharper and more detailed picture than my HTPC (Nvidia 7950GT).
My 3800 has stop working and I can not get them to send me any
info on returning it for service. I think they might have financial problems. Hopefully I will here from them soon.

Holy crap, PMS issued a new firmware - 2.10.
Anyone given it a go?
Hi from Italy. I downloaded two files for c2's fw upgrade but after more than 2 hours I only see "Preparing. . . " on OSD panel.
Got it !
2.1 is very stable and works fine !
Still have 1080i60 to 1080p24 cadence break though, but I guess that cannot be helped.
kyse, try the rescue version of the fw.
I have both at home, if you have problems downloading them and if that can help I could burn them on a CD and send it to you (I live in France), those and all other VPS3800/3300 fws.
