I am building a new house and I want to make sure that I pre-wire everything for the correct setup. Here is what I am looking at:

Open concept kitchen, eating area, great room (in order, left to right)
LCD TV on great room wall that can be seen from kitchen
TV connected to digital cable, DVD player and digital video player (i.e. DivX)
In-ceiling speakers in all rooms that will work both with TV and a digital audio source (iPod or something similar, could be same player as digital video)
Not looking for surround sound
Ability to turn on and off speakers in different rooms
Receiver that is as small as possible (I don't have a lot of space for all the components)

Does this make sense? Is it doable? I have never set up any sort of audio or video system before, so I'm starting from scratch.

Thanks,

Well it's definitly do-able. But depending on how many pairs of speakers you want, and whether you want the capability of listening to different sources in different areas, is going to dictate the cost of the system. Generally to do a system like that, you will need some sort of multi channel amplifier, and a receiver. If you want to be able to turn the speakers on and off, and control volume, then you will probably want to look at some type of speaker selector box, I know a company called niles makes them, and they work pretty well.
