why didn't this idea ever get off the ground? any interest in reviving it?
kevinivey 08-31-04, 05:57 PM It got overwhelmed by TWC summerville, and was greatly ignored otherwise. It still exist.

bdenman 08-31-04, 06:54 PM And the Columbia Thread's purpose was always to discuss local HDTV issues regardless whether it was unique to TWC or was related to a local OTA station.
TechMan 09-02-04, 02:06 AM Bob, When did you add the multi-audio streams on the weather radar?
PBS 32-3 Has No Audio, but I can get Close Caption.
Anyone else using OTA signal having trouble getting a good signal lock on WIS in the Columbia area. Nothing in my setup has changed,no trees in the way. but I can't seem to get a steady and strong signal goes from 76 to 20 to 0.
bdfox18doe 09-02-04, 06:58 AM Multi audio was added when radar was moved to 25-3...
Audio 1 is NWS Columbia, Audio 2 is NWS Rock Hill..
TechMan 09-02-04, 01:23 PM Thanks for the info Bob. PBS-HD's sound is good now, but I sill need some help with my WIS-HD reception problem. Anyone else getting signal fluctuation on WIS-HD on OTA in the Columbia area? I even get this problem when on a indoor antenna.
kevinivey 09-02-04, 05:57 PM No problems with Wis-dt ota or with cable.
kevinivey 09-03-04, 06:15 AM Dan, I noticed last night that WLTX-DT was late switching to the CBS HD feed of CSI. When it did go HD , the clipping audio started and stayed that way throughout the broadcast. I hope management will one day see the need to give you a reliable audio decoder.

does this mean you are not experiencing any audio sync issues? i'm still occasionally getting about a half second delay in the audio. not as bad as it used to be but still noticeable. i don't have an OTA tuner so i can't tell if it's going out that way.
bdenman 09-03-04, 03:10 PM scruffy7,
On digital tier channels, TWC just passes along the mpeg encoded signal from the station so any sync issues should be at the station/network level or within your particular box. Slight sync problems are not infrequent and may occur with some or all programs on a given network. Some problems though are caused/exacerbated within the convertors themselves. So, I suggest you first do a cold reboot of your box and see if that does not help. Next would be to contact the station via a phone call (engineering). Please do let us know what happens.
US Open Tennis is SD via OTA...it's being broadcast in HD per the Guide and the AVS US Open Forum. That thread was more focused on Digital 5.1 Surround Sound issues, clearly not something we have to concern ourselves with here in Columbia:rolleyes:
Is this a local "throwing the switch" problem or something else? Whatever, I hope it gets fixed quickly as this is one of the premiere sports events this time of year (other than the G'Cocks whuppin Vandy!).
******************************************************
Late Update: Looks like the HD is only on the main court...the Venus Williams match is in HD tonight...looks great (on D* Channel 74-Bravo/USA HD). Hopefully, there will be more courts covered in HD in the upcoming week.
kshockley 09-07-04, 02:40 PM US Open in SD on WLTX??

Well it didn't look great on CBSHD...it was plain ole SD! I called and I was told that is the way CBS was sending the signal. I watched all the coverage on CBS and not once did I see any HD coverage. Very frustrating!
D-rock0030 09-07-04, 03:19 PM I just read a post on the Programming section of this forum and according to it in January of 2005 ESPN will launch ESPN2HD. I guess this will be another HD channel that TWC refuses to get. What a JOKE!
kevinivey 09-08-04, 06:59 PM I normally would not respond to a non local post, but I will include a local element to even things out. Sunday marks the second year of no ESPN-HD , and Fox from TWC. I find both to bee totally inexcusable.
Anyone notice that Wis-DT has been inserting their logo (bug) every 30 seconds non stop for over a week when they are broadcasting a network feed. They even to this during commercials, and over the NBC bug. I wonder if they even watch their digital station? Not to mention the terrible network lip sync issue.

At the same time it was being shown here in SD, I turned my antenna to Charlotte and the CBS affiliate, WBTV, was showing it in HD. Go figure.

Your right! UGH! I sat their blinking logo tonight when I tuned in to checkout HAWAII in HD. (fwiw, I was in Florida for 10 days; saw it there in NTSC; came home Saturday night). I quickly tuned out but did check in later and saw it on during a couple of commercial breaks. Sure makes you wonder if anyone at the station ever watches their own DT/HD signal.
Now for a kudo: As much as I generally dislike multicasting, I must say that WOLO/s ABC's News Now channel was very useful during Hurricane Frances' trip through Florida. Having family down there, it proved very useful since their broadcasts were mostly from Florida stations in the areas affected by the storm.
rodeoclown 09-09-04, 01:16 PM Excuse this rant, as I have not contributed very much to this forum, but have lurked for a while.
Any Gamecock fans here worth their salt should be fuming right now - at least those who are TWC HD customers.
This is not a diatribe against TWC, because overall, I have been VERY happy with their service in the past 10 years or so, in my personal situation.
But for the biggest USC football game of the year (imo) to not only be here in Cola, but also an ESPN Sportscenter game, and of course broadcast in HD, and not available via TWC is too much for me to bear.
I am a very (overly) patient person, but I am looking at Directv options today, and will hopefully be able to resolve the setup before Saturday - unfortunately I let this sneak up on me, and did not realize that it would be an ESPN HD game.
I know some here have ranted before, and I have not been called to action until now. I appreciate the great HD I have seen via TWC in the past, but with any business, no matter what the circumstances (yes I know some Disney's demands seem ridiculous), customers will eventually vote with their wallets.
Whew I feel better.
END RANT
Bruce,
Do you have problems with WIS-DT audio sync problems OTA vs the SA8000.
I'm just curious, as this sound issue is driving me crazy.
bdenman 09-09-04, 05:22 PM blizz,
I can't answer your question directly; I did not hear a problem last night during Hawaii (using 8000HD but analog audio only) but I admit the bug problem could have overshadowed any audio glitches. I will tune in tonight (on Joey or MI) and give it a check. I do know that what you get via TWC is the same signal as that sent out OTA. So any sync issues are from the station (or network) UNLESS your box is itself goofing up and a reboot should fix that.
addendum: turns out I had Hawaii from last night recorded on my 8000HD and after watching about 10 minutes into the program I do not see any appreciable lip sync issues. So... ??

I can answer. WIS-DT has terrible lip sync issue ota or with cable when showing NBC network shows.
They do not respond to my emails anymore. Their audio generally matches the the audio on WIS-DT 10-2 which is a digital duplicate of their analog channel. Yes, there are "3" Wis channels that are broadcasting the same thing.
Wolo-DT is by far the Columbia HD leader.

Hear hear!
WOLO is indeed the HDTV champion here in Columbia.
1) Consistent switching between SD and HD at the right time
2) Excellent 5.1 sound
3) The sound is always in sync with the picture
4) No audio drop-outs
5) No annoying bugs on the screen every 25 seconds
6) Digital closed captions of network shows
I don't know how WLTX can keep a straight face when they say they are the HDTV Leader.
kevinivey 09-09-04, 07:40 PM With that said... I generally find CBS's HD programming to be the best. The increased bandwidth that Wltx-DT has been using lately has improved the NFL football games with regards to motion artifacts. Their audio can be poor at times ,and sometimes the programs that are supposed to be HD do not start in HD , or never switch to HD. I'm sure when ,or if Wltx gets newer equipment that these problems will happen less frequently.
bdenman 09-09-04, 08:32 PM It is after 8pm and WIS has somehow failed to provide the HD feed of Joey (it is confirmed in the Programming forum that it really is in HD). I just called the station and asked the nice young lady staffer to please inform Master Control of the situation and to switch over if possible. Sshe did try while I was on hold but their number was busy. FWIW, analog audio on the SD feed appears fine.
kevinivey 09-09-04, 09:18 PM Hey Bruce, You might want to send them a list of what is HD.:)

Watched WIS at 10pm here (Medical Investigator) which was in HD (vice Joey earlier). And yes, WIS did have serious (analog) lip sync issues tonight. It went from not noticeable to barely noticeable to really really bad (at 10:37 it briefly reached the really really bad stage). Looks like someone was "riding the gain knob" and got all screwed up or something. Of note, I did not get a/v receiver connected and in the loop tonight so could not check the digital audio output.
FWIW, I emailed Barry Ahrendt this morning about the bug issues which did continue tonight during the HD program and I received a response just before 6pm. He said "This sounds like a glitch. I'll check it out because I have not seen that myself." The flashing bug was on again tonight. Lets hope they do change it and soon too.

Nope. I think I should give up on them once and for all.
kevinivey 09-10-04, 05:30 AM I tuned in to "Medical Investigator" and noted the same audio problems via the digital out. Wis has really dropped the ball with the digital station. I gave up with them during the Olympics, and looks like they rest of the season is a bust.
D-rock0030 09-10-04, 10:50 AM Is WOLO going to continue to turn off the HD feed exactly at midnight during every football game? Common sense would tell someone that an NFL game that starts at 9pm is not going to be over exactly at midnight.
bdfox18doe 09-10-04, 11:12 AM It's on an automatic timer. I'll remind the mco's to check it in times of overrun.
bdenman 09-10-04, 12:18 PM Early this morning I emailed WIS (Barry Ahrendt) about the lack of HD during Joey, the (ongoing) audio problems noted last night on WIS-DT, and the fact that their bug continued its "flasher" behavior. I received this reply a bit ago:
"We're taking that ID off the air until we can fix the equipment malfunction. It will be displayed every 30 minutes. Thanks for bringing it to my attention."
Note he did not respond to my comments about poor audio or the lack of HD on the 8pm NBC HD feed of Joey. It also appears likely their bug will remain large, high contrast, and in full color even when the blinking problem is fixed.
D-rock0030 09-10-04, 04:01 PM Well it sounds like the bug on WIS-DT might only be shown for a short duration once every 30 mins. Thats how I read his comments. Thats not so bad. TNT-HD puts their bug up bright red and yellow anytime the material is true HD and has it translucent whenever its upconverted material. That bright red and yellow bug is quite annoying and distracting.
I thought I had remembered reading that WOLO was on an automatic timer. Maybe it could be set at 12:30 for monday nights or switched manually for the football games. I think the game ended at about 12:15 so it wasnt so bad but some monday night games last until almost 1am so we would have missed almost a full hour during some games.
D-rock0030 09-10-04, 04:05 PM Has anyone in here heard from WACH about when it will begin broadcasting in true HD? Its football season now and Fox has the double header this weekend so thats two HD games that we are missing. Also, is there any word on when TWCSC and WACH will sign an agreement?

Well, I just got off the phone with Dan at WACH. That situation is that the splicer is in and installed BUT does not work correctly at this time. Software problems. He said that it will take at at least few days to get it running. Possibility is an engineer might need to be dispatched here so it could take a week or two to get it all sorted out. So, stand by to stand by.
As for TWC carriage; one can only guess and my guess is it won't be for quite awhile. Hoping I am wrong on that! And no, I did not ask Dan about that today (he is busy and thats not his department anyway).
DianaTWCSC 09-10-04, 06:06 PM ESPN HD is now available on the TWC HD Tier Channel 950
– the deal was just signed – authorization is in progress – so it will come on the air sometime this evening (sorry I can’t be more precise than that)
No information will show up on the Guide until Tuesday, September 14th.
Customer’s who currently subscribe to the HD Tier will automatically receive this channel. Customer’s who wish to ad the HD Tier should call 866-TWC-SC01, the addition of this service can be done over the phone.
bdenman 09-10-04, 06:07 PM I see that UPN affiliate WZRB-TV Ch 47 is launching January 1 2005 and WBHQ will stop UPN broadcasts as of today. The State (http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/sports/horse_racing/kentucky_derby/9405575.htm+WZRB+tv&hl=en) had an article on it (under a Kentucky Derby headline; strange). Not sure if this station will be analog or digital (though the FCC nomenclature makes it appear the license is analog). note: I have no idea if this has been reported on here before and I just missed it.

jdjackson 09-10-04, 09:22 PM We all know that Diana just told the suits that the South Carolina Georgia game was on tommorow evening, so they had to get the deal done. For that, I won't even ask about ESPNHD 2.
bdenman 09-10-04, 10:04 PM I am definitely of the opinion that we have the best support of all ~32 TWC divisions when it comes to HDTV. Kudos to Diana and her merry band of engineers and support staff for outstanding work! I would not be suprised to hear that they also are miles ahead of virtually every other cable unit in America as well.
kevinivey 09-10-04, 10:07 PM at least 95 miles.;)
DianaTWCSC 09-11-04, 07:37 AM Thank you everyone - the real credit (always) goes to the engineers. You guys benefit from one of the best (if not best) teams in the business.
FYI - email we got did not include any specific deal points (not that I could really share them with you if it did) and it did not include mention of any other ESPN product, specifically no mention of ESPN2HD.
mb2foruaolcom 09-11-04, 08:58 PM Tommy and Mike and the rest of the TWC engineers are as good a group you will find anywhere in the world. Most don't know how ahead of the rest of the country you are as these guys usually figure out how to make things happen long before anyone else. DMAs and all the legal hoops you have to go through are what really makes the delivery of services hard and TWC has no reason to not want to deliver all the serivces they can to as many customers as they can. Thanks for getting the ESPNHD on just in time for the USC GA game. The quality of the video for this game was awesome, almost as good as being at the game!!!!!

No Widescreen or HD for the NFL from our local Fox station. So, the cable carriage seems to be a mute point. They at least showed widecreen before they messed with it.:(
bdfox18doe 09-12-04, 02:55 PM Kevin, you just need to quit complaining and move up here to Charlotte!
Or, to Rock Hill where you can get the Charlotte and Columbia stations!
kevinivey 09-12-04, 03:38 PM Well, some would say posting about Charlotte in Columbia, SC thread is kind of pointless. But, the last time I checked it looked like TWC in Charlotte was one of the few that didn't have ESPN-HD up yet. I was merely trying to console others that the NFL Fox-HD games are not being broadcast in the Columbia area, not Charlotte. I understand what you are saying , but its not really helpful in any regards.
Is there an ETA on HD for WACH?

Diana, I'm going to come down and kidnap you and bring you to Charlotte. I've written a dozen emails to them today and yesterday about everyone in the country getting ESPN-HD except us. I get answers having to do with FCC Regs, Quality issues and fitting it into TWC programming. If you would like some of the responses I'll be glad to forward them to you.

ETA: Real Soon Now (next week or two).
My post on Friday (#3033 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4329301#post4329301)) addressed that question but perhaps my point was not clear to all. I was told it will take up to two more weeks for WACH to get HD running. The FOX network provided a "splicer" that is required for FOX affilates to be able to do HD. That hardware is currently physically installed but not yet functional due to software issues. Once configured (and which might require an on-site visit by a software engineer), the HD should be functional. I asked Dan (Dan Orta, Chief Eng) about DD5.1 but he did not know at this time.
aglasser 09-13-04, 08:17 AM This forum, Diana and the great CSR's at TWC are the reason I stay with TWC. I was on satellite for several years until I changed and found out how good the local (Columbia) TWC is.
Great enginers too, whom will actually talk to you on the phone.
Good work and thanks,
Al
DianaTWCSC 09-13-04, 08:41 AM Thank you - I'll pass along to the CSR management team.
chilley 09-13-04, 09:22 AM Bruce, Does that mean a few days until WACH is HD OTA or does that mean the WACH will be HD via TWC in Cola?
Sorry I didn't see that post, Bruce...
I just glanced at the Fox HD networks thread in HD Programming and didn't
see WACH and didn't want to bother them about a local issue there.
Can't seem to find the time to read the forums as much as in the past.
Thanks for everything you do here in the Midlands for HD, though.
DianaTWCSC 09-13-04, 09:59 AM We are still in negotiations with WACH for carriage of their HD product. There is no ETA at this time for adding it to our lineup.
HughScot 09-13-04, 10:52 AM Diana,
Thought you'd be interested in a portion of an email I received from Charlotte regarding your post which stated the time it took you to get ESPN on the air......
"............Concerning the letter that SC got I highly doubt that they received an email and aired ESPN within the next two hours. They may have released that information within several hours but I doubt it all happened that fast."
This arrived this morning from Sean at TWC in Charlotte. They still maintain they are still in negotiations with ESPN and I'm frustrated as heck.
Hugh
DianaTWCSC 09-13-04, 11:03 AM I feel badly for Sean. Obviously he is trying to do his best in a trying situation without having all the facts. He is certainly at a disadvantage that is not his fault.
Here's another local Fox question... since all these games were shot in
widescreen 720p, why couldn't WACH at least pass them to us in 480p
EDTV widescreen? I've watched EDTV games and I'll take it anyday over
what we got to see yesterday.
bdfox18doe 09-13-04, 02:20 PM because FOX is no longer delivering a widescreen feed.
IrmoGamecoq 09-13-04, 02:40 PM The ESPN HD news is the best I've gotten all day. I left too early to get Diana's email about it friday (I don't check email on weekends) or I would've set the HD-DVR to record 950 for the big game Saturday night, but it turns out it wasn't one I really wanted to watch again anyway. :(
Even though it didn't help out on my personal situation, I'd like to extend my thanks to Diana for getting us the information so quickly. Diana's service is one of the reasons I'm always touting Time Warner cable to my friends/family.
Also want to say thanks to Bruce here at AVS, and the station engineers that we have on site too. This forum is a terrific source of information!

Once WACH-DT starts carrying FOX-HD then (history tells us) that TWCSC and Raycom Media (owners of WACH) may start earnest discussions regarding cable carriage of WACH-DT. (see Diana's comment). None of the other local DT stations got onto TWCSC lineup until they were HD capable (though none of the others delayed as much as has WACH but WIS-DT took a very long time to get on TWCSC after they started doing HD)
FWIW, WACH-DT/Ch 48 has been broadcasting SD and 480p (ED) programming for over a year now (details buried in this forum's archives) so yeah; it appears they have to be able to do FOX-HD before an carriage agreement will be finalized. And it appears WACH-DT may be able to do HD pass though from FOX real soon now (1 to 2 weeks time frame). So hopefully all the lawyers have their pencils sharpened and pads ready and will all sit down and get to business!
kshockley 09-13-04, 03:11 PM I was in HD heaven this weekend! The USC game looked fantastic (thanks Diana), as did the US Open on CBS.

Just to make you feel better there was no program info in the IPG Saturday night so you could not have set up the game to record anyway. I just checked and I don't see any program data yet so we still cannot record ESPN-HD at this time. (I presume in time we will be able to record ESPN-HD like we can the other HD channels). Diana said it would take a few days to get the IPG working and today was the first workday since it was switched on.

Yeah, but thats too easy and makes too much sense. :)
I didnt even realize we had ESPN-HD until this morning I was watching the Weather channel and saw a crawl on the screen about being able to watch the USC-UGa game in HD on channel 950 so I immediately flipped over and saw Sportscenter in HD. Looked great. I was at the game saturday so I didn't need to watch it in HD but I did miss the NFL game last night in HD because there was no info out about TWC picking up ESPN-HD and I was watching NFL games all day long on Sunday. Hopefully TWC and Disney reached an agreement that will allow TWC to pick up ESPN2-HD in January and ESPNU in March when it comes out. But again I think that that makes way too much sense for a bunch of lawyers to have figured out.
But, this at least is a big step in the right direction, next is getting WACH-DT on cable and maybe some of the better movie channels in HD like Cinemax-HD and Starz-HD.

Yes, I stand corrected on what I said earlier to IrmoGamecoq... you can set up to record it now as a manual recording. I have one running now and it seems to be working.
kevinivey 09-13-04, 06:08 PM The World Series will be broadcast by Fox in HD. I believe the it starts on Oct. 23rd. I think this may speed up the ole' carriage agreement.
JeffSmall 09-13-04, 08:12 PM ABC HD?
I got curious about HD being broadcast in my area (Myrtle Beach), so I emailed the affiliates near me. I got a reply from Dave Carfolite at the local Fox affiliate saying that it would be "probably 3-4 years". In fact, his complete answer is, "We are broadcasting on ch 18 in DTV but it will take a retrofit to our master control before we can even pass HD, so we probably will be looking a few years out." So...well, I figured, what could it hurt to ask?
Anyway, I also emailed my local ABC affiliate, WPDE and got an interesting reply. They wrote back, "As of last week we are now simulcasting ABC network in HD. The prime time and football shows as rule of thumb."
This is pretty cool, but I'm guessing I'd need OTA to be able to get it, and I don't currently have an antenna.
So I guess my next question is, if my local ABC affiliate is broadcasting HD now, which is really cool considering they'd be the only ABC HD I could get, how do we get it added to TimeWarner? WPDE currently broadcasts on my local TW and it seems like a no-brainer to get the HD feed as well. How does that happen? Who has to be contacted to get it added?
DianaTWCSC 09-13-04, 08:23 PM WE are currently in negotiations with WPDE for carriage of their HD channel. Unfortunately, these deals are not even close to a "no brainer". With the uncharted waters of the future of HD technology, each side is very cautious in the negotiations. We will continue to work to realize a successful conclusion. In the end, both sides do want this to happen, so I'm confident it will happen some day - I just don't know when.

Yay! That's awesome news. It'll be nice to have the three major networks to watch.

Oh, I meant "no brainer" with regard to "it'd be a no-brainer we'd want this added". I understand negotiations can be somewhat sticky. I'm a patient fellow.

mb2foruaolcom 09-13-04, 10:00 PM Jeff forget an antenna to get the wpde or even the fox feed if they had one in myrtle as they are brodcasted off the towers near dillion 70 miles away and the level you would receive even from a 100 foot tower wouldn't even work in myrtle beach with the ota receiver. wbtw has channel 56 DTV up and running from there and we can't even see the rf carrier here in myrtle let alone have a watchable pic.
wis and tnt have been off on TWC since Friday here in myrtle and that sucks.
Diana,
Thank you, thank TWC upper mgmt, and thank the boyz on the engineering team in Columbia, for ESPN-HD.
All of you take the rest of the week off. Have your bosses call me if they have a problem with that!!
:D
Take care,

chummel 09-13-04, 10:15 PM Diana,
Please accept my gratitiude as well for ESPN HD. I recorded the USC game just in time so I could review how much Lou & Dondrial can infuriate me. The service I receive from TWC has led me to not by the digital phone service but I have converted my father-inlaw to cable, RR, and digital phone. Thanks again!

We have confirmed in the headend that these services are not currently off, nor were they been off the air over the weekend, nor were there any other customer complaints on this issue. That means that the situation to limited to your home, so if you will PM me your address and phone number, I will proceed with troubleshooting and resolving the issue.
Thanks,
FYI - a call or an email when you first see an issue would be more conducive to quick resolution. We can't fix a problem we don't know is there.

Oh yeah, I can totally verify what Diana said, at least in terms of my own reception in Myrtle Beach. I've caught TNTHD *and* WIS in the last 72 hours several times a day. So you're definitely the one experiencing the outage. I can also vouch for what she says about calling customer service if something's "out". They've fixed that stuff for me over the phone in minutes when I've called. They're super over the phone with helping. Don't underestimate the power of a phone call. I know other Support lines may suck to no end, but TWSC's has been 100% up and up in my experience, and well worth the call placed.
mb2foruaolcom 09-15-04, 04:09 AM WIS and TNT were back on yesterday and worked great since. I didn't complain as with these new services it hasn't been unusual to have them have problems and understandable so as with any new technology they do. I think the services are great and we have more availabe to us than most other people in the country do so don't take the comment as a complaint as it wasn't ment in that way. Diana you do a great job by interacting with your customers here and not many other cable companies do things like this. I only wish we had cbs, abc and fox in hd and I understand how complicated contracts of this kind are but I really do feel that it can be done if TWC wanted it to be done. Example of that would be the ESPNHD as I am positive thet the fact that ESPN was in town doing the USC-GA game was far to much preasure to not get it on the air. I am very glad you guys got it done but it sure looks that it happened that way.
DianaTWCSC 09-15-04, 07:04 AM Good Morning,
Thanks for the generous spirit about the new channels, but really if they go off the air you need to tell us - its actually what we want in order to improve overall service - if your missing something then someone with a less generous spirit may also be missing it. And, in this instance HD channels are not a new technology to us, when we put one on, it should stay on.
mb2foruaolcom 09-16-04, 02:40 AM I don't like to complain especially when we don't pay for any of the services we receive. Just really happy our family has all the digital, HD, premium and internet services. Hubby tries to explain to me how it all works but its way over my head but I try to learn.
DianaTWCSC 09-16-04, 08:40 AM Ok well, I did not know that you had complimentary service. Based on your comment about your husband, I'm going to guess that he is an employee and that is why you are receiving complimentary service. If so, then please know there are two reasons why we give employees this very generous benefit:
1. Employees need to know the product - the expectation is they will go the extra mile to try a few minutes of a new channels each week - to put the HSD through its paces, as well as Digital Phone when they receive it.
2. The other side to this - equally important - is being our front line eyes and ears. If you are seeing a problem, then chances are the paying customer next door to you is also seeing that problem, so we need to know about it to fix it asap.
In other words, Complimentary service to employees is not just a benefit, it is a very important responsibility.
If your husband is not an employee and your family receives complimentary service for another reason, then we still go back to number two. You may not be paying, but others are and we do appreciate the opportunity to know about issues sooner than later, so that we can resolve them before we create issues with paying customers.
Thanks.
mb2foruaolcom 09-16-04, 01:32 PM Thanks Diana, yes you are correct and hubby said exactley same to me when I asked him about it, I also pass the good word about TWC to all my friends as well about all the great things I experience as well as these channels and services are the greatest things I have ever seen in my life. As far as when the channels were off I never thought about it as a way to make sure that they get back on faster for other customers but rather that I am just lucky to experience all these channels for nothing.

DVI output is currently available on the 3250.
Last estimate for 1.2 download on the 8000HD was September. It is highly unlikely this will happen at this point. I have asked for a new ETA on the download.
mb2foruaolcom 09-17-04, 06:23 PM CSSR at the Oak St office said DVI was not available yet when we asked for the box last week and we specifically asked if any HD boxes had DVI yet as that is what we wanted to hook to our new plasma. Just thought I would pass along as maybe the CSSR was new and needs a little education on the equipment.
Some possible good news for the Florence-Myrtle Beach DMA. Billy Huggins, the vp and general manager for WPDE, the ABC affiliate in Florence, thinks they may be close to a deal with TWC to carry the digital station. Now before getting too excited, I have no idea if TWC also thinks they are close to a deal. I know they have supposedly been close with WCIV for 9 months now, but still no deal. I would encourage everyone in the Florence-Myrtle Beach DMA to let Mr. Huggins (whuggins@wpde.com ) know you are interested in getting their digital channel on TWC and hopefully TWC will be willing to go the extra mile to work out this deal. I am happy that we now have espn-hd and I think Diana also does a great job. However, I just think it is a disservice to the subscribers in the Florence-MB DMA that we are not able to watch Monday night Football and the ABC shows/sitcoms in high def. Maybe this will change soon. Sorry to post in the Columbia thread, but there really is not an active Myrtle Beach thread and I know many people in that area view this forum.
I live in Pawleys Island just south of Myrtle Beach but in the Charleston DMA. However, we get analog WPDE so I wonder if we would get WPDE HD also.
mb2foruaolcom 09-20-04, 01:48 AM I think you would Gary as TWC is going by the DMA (as they should by FCC rules) to determine if you can get the HD OTA channels available on their network and you are in WPDE's DMA. Any OTA channel you receive in analog would be available to you in HD if TWC has a deal and on their network. I am sure that is how it works. TWC has no reason not to want to let you receive any HD channel they have on their network as long as it is within FCC and DMA rules, TWC has a contract agreement with the station. Many of these stations know how bad people want to have these HD channels and many of the station owners intentionally use this fact to hardball in contract talks with TWC and other cable operators to get all they can out of it. On the stations side of it though you have to understand how extremely expensive it is to upgrade to HD as they have to spend millions on a transmitter and also many of them have to upgrade the studio to transmitter site links and that is also in the millions for many of them as in this area the studio to tower can be as much as a 70 mile hop. My hubby loves football and is dying to have Fox, ABC and CBS in HD as well. Watched the Bengals-Dolphins game tonight and it is so awesome to be able to see peoples faces in the stands from field views as the pix are so crisp. Hopefully we will have some networks in HD here soon. VOOM has some great channels also in HD and it really is a great service as well. We have never had any problems with any of the satellite services we have had for many years either. NFL sunday ticket is a great great thing as being from Dallas myself there is no other way I would be able to watch my team if we didn't have it.

It is the Columbia forum. But us Florence/Myrtle Beach DMA guys get little help in our forum except from Diana. So we tend to ask our questions over here. Right or Wrong, that is the jist of it. Since TWCSC is HQ in the Columbia area, people tend to ask here, although Diana does answer in the Flo/Mb forum. FWIW, I pull my OTA stations out of Columbia although Florence has there own affiliates, just not much in the way of HD yet. So, yes, Florence/Myrtle Beach sometimes posts here.
Can anyone post the power strengths of the stations broadcasting in Columbia? FOX seems to be too low of a power for me to pick them up. The Colts play the Packers on FOX next week and I want to catch it in HD out of Columbia.

Good question. I ran some queries of the FCC database to get some answers (hopefully they are close). I have included WOLO here though Bob has answered you (and offered to help you further with specifics for WOLO).
FOX: WACH-DT/Ch 48 is licensed for 520 kW ERP; antenna height (ant ht) 460 meters AGL; the antenna's polar plot (radiation pattern) shows it may be difficult to get in FLO/MB. (and they are not yet doing HD yet though expected any day now).
ABC: WOLO-DT/CH 8 is licensed for 43 kW ERP; ant ht 527 m AGL; polar plot shows it might be okay for parts of FLO/MB (Provo okay in some areas by viewers). (agrees with Bob Davis obviously)
NBC: WIS-DT/CH 41 is licensed for 874 kW ERP; ant ht 427 m AGL; polar plot shows it might be okay for FLO/MB (but will vary by viewer location).
CBS: WLTX-DT/CH 17 is operating under a STA license (Special Temporary Authority) that I understand means they are operating at half power; 500 vice 1000 kW ERP; Ant ht ~ 478m AGL; polar plot indicates FLO/MB reception is probably difficult at best.
PBS: WRLK-DT/Ch32 (SCETV/Cola) is licensed for 65 kW ERP; ant ht 396 m AGL. polar map not shown (but should be relatively circular but be advised that Florence reception has always been very difficult; try Sumter SCETV station instead.
PBS: WRJA-DT Ch 28 (SCETV/Sumter) is operating under a Construction Permit still and licensed for 98.4 kW ERP; ant ht 354 m AGL. polar plot is not shown. Understand decent reception is possible in some parts of the Florence area.
Hope this helps.

Speaking of nonsense (Bruce will enjoy this one for sure) - this is from the Reuters article (http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=scienceNews&storyID=6268375):
Radio and television signals are captured using antennas close to the size of the wavelength of broadcast radiation. These are often huge -- thus the need for tall antennas.
What does it have to do with antennas height? ;)
bdenman 09-20-04, 05:52 PM Kir,
Chuckle... Your so right! Big duh there. Tall antennas vice "wide" antennas maybe. Silly tech writers who can't spell TV. Lets pretend he meant to say big or wide antennas. And lets say I want a set of rabbit ears for say Channel 8. An appropriate dipole antenna for that channel is 31ft (the formula is 91% of 1/2 wavelength). So the next question has to be: Bob, you got a set of rabbit ears that big you can loan me? :)
duh
bdfox18doe 09-20-04, 07:08 PM Bruce, I'd have to check with my rabbit. In the past, he hasn't been very keen on this idea for obvious reasons! Whoa..shades of go ask alice there!

Hey bdfox,
I once used a USDTV receiver from Walmart. I returned it. It was too light duty for my application, very weak construction.
I have wanted to get the LG LST-4200A from ********************* for some time. But financially I get sidetracked with purchases like an NCL cruise and a deposit for an '05 Mustang GT Convertable. But soon I will press the add to cart button, probably next month.
For an address, just put in a neighbors, 3000 Claussen Road, Florence, SC 29505. I am 59.9 miles from the towers. My lat/long is 34.1525 and -79.1650.
J&M Supply Co. here in Florence sells Winegard and Antennacraft.
My antenna selection is Winegard 9095 for UHF and Antennacraft 10-7-13 for high VHF. I have them installed in the attic. I have them connected together and some good RG6 coaxial cable that is about 40' in length.
FWIW, I have the TWCSC SA3100HD and broadcast cable for $15.55/month. I receive PBS HD, NBC-HD, Braves, TNT-HD and DiscoveryHD.
Between the 3' FTA satellite dish and my 10' antenna, the homeowners association here asked me to pick one, so it was the antenna inside the attic. I know the FCC laws, but who can fight them? They looked at the several page document and said no.

Reception with my old equipment, USDTV:
WOLO excellent, 80%.
WACH nothing, 0%.
WIS, excellent, 75%.
WLTX very good 60%.
WJRA very good 60%, aimed at Columbia not Sumter.
I will get you a new report once I get the new receiver.
chummel 09-20-04, 10:57 PM IS there always this much lip sync delay on MNF?
bdfox18doe 09-21-04, 07:56 AM Thanks Flo. You would be VERY happy with any of the LG receivers. If I were
you, I'd wait just a bit and get the 5th generation LG's that will be out first quarter next year. I have one of the USDTV's, they arent' bad, but as consumer reports would say "There are better choices"..Also have the Sony 300 and Zenith 520, both are excellent receivers. Appreciate the reception report.
DTV Guy 09-21-04, 03:01 PM I was watching Monday Night Football on the Charlotte ABC DTV station. Great pictue and 5.1; howevever, every time they went to commercial or were running "tape" the audio went silent. (Tape as in pre-recorded material, such as the player intros.) As long as we on live game action all was OK.
Did anyone experience any of this on WOLO-DT during MNF or was all fine?
(I doublt it or Bob would have a string of posts. :) )
Thanks :)
I too emailed Mr. Huggins at WPDE with this pretty incredible response -
We are providing a full power HD signal for all of this area on channel 16. We have offered the signal to Time Warner at no charge. This is the same way we provide our analog channel 15 but they havent responded. If you call them you can probably help push this along.
Thanks,
Billy
mb2foruaolcom 09-22-04, 11:56 AM They may well not be asking for money to carry but that may not be the whole story as they may be demading unrealistict non-monetary things such as placement of the channel in the lineup, to be included on the hotel loop system, to carry some other service that they want on TWC or any other unrealistic thing that TWC may not want to be tied up in.
Maybe, but WPDE has stated their case. Let's hear what TWC has to say about it.
According to Mr. Huggins e-mail:
The addition we asked for is ABC " network exclusivity" which is already in place for our analog signal. This is FCC law for analog and will be for digital. It prevents them from bringing in ABC New York or another time zone. Adelphia has already accepted the one line addition.
So they are offering the station for free and we still can not get TWC to agree? I am not sure what more they want. It is very frustrating. Again I am sorry to post this in the Columbia forum, but the question was raised here. I am trying to move comments about this to the Florence/MB forum.
Gary, if you have not checked already, check your pm's.

He said: "I have forwarded your email to our chief engineer. They are aware of the problem and are working to correct it." Time will tell.

That is true but it was never this bad. Its almost unwatchable now. A person's lips will move and like two seconds later you hear the voice.
FloCobra 09-24-04, 12:28 PM You could always output the analog audio from the analog channel via a VCR to a stereo receiver. Then watch the digital channel via your HDTV display. LOL.
bdenman 09-24-04, 01:20 PM I did not have audio sync problems during last night's ER. This was with analog audio output; not digital. I have notified WIS of this fact (Mr Barry Ahrendt, Dir Mkt and Prog and Mr Ken Thayer, Ch Eng). If anyone watched this program using digital audio and still had a problem please let them know. I do suspect this was but a temporary fix and bears watching further.
kevinivey 09-25-04, 06:04 AM No lip sync issues last night on Wis-DT, but no HD for Third Watch. Medical Investigations at 10 was HD throughout.
D-rock0030 09-27-04, 08:56 AM What was the deal with WLTX-DT yesterday? They started showing the Cheifs-Texans game at 1pm in HD and it was a good game. Then all of the sudden they switch to the Titans-Jags game that was not HD and was the most boring game ever. Why would they switch off a good game in HD to show a boring game in SD.... makes no sense.
kevinivey 09-27-04, 02:13 PM They have to mirror the game on their analog channel. The Jacksonville/Nashville game was the scheduled game for Wltx.

I understand that, but KC-Houston was obviously the CBS National game. Columbia SC isnt in the Jacksonville or Tennessee viewing area so WLTX could have shown whatever game they wanted to.

scruffy7 09-27-04, 06:53 PM i don't watch a whole lot on WIS but i thought the 5.1 mix on ER the other night was good (and in sync for a change).
on the other hand i find that on some shows on WOLO-DT the dialogue is annoyingly going to the L/R channels instead of the center.

Wasn't just WIS. We lost three commercial DT stations at one point during prime time.... WIS, WLTX and WOLO (checked via my OTA setup using my RS-DBT antenna). I suspect it was weather related. About 10:37 I noticed WLTX-DT had come back on during CSI Miami though I do not know when. SCETV/WRLK was still broadcasting when I checked and I did not WACH-DT to check so do not know if were affected as well.
Does anybody here know if I'd still be able to receive the "free" HDTV channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, etc.) if I drop the digital teir (you know, the one with the Discovery Wings, G4, and all those channels) off my cable package?
I find that I never watch any of those digital teir channels and would love to save a few bucks by unsubscribing to them.

Yes, you can drop it. I dropped it for a couple of years, but switched back recently.
bdenman 09-29-04, 01:44 PM Anybody in Cola watch Law & Order SVU or Leno on WIS-DT last night? In a different forum a Charleston viewer reported problems with WIS and noted no one here had commented on audio sync problems. I did not watch either program though I had checked in around 8 to what was up (Father of the Pride) and the audio (analog) appeared to be fine. Just curious.
bdenman 09-29-04, 01:55 PM Since I had not yet heard back from my Monday email to Dan at WACH, I called and asked about the status of the splicer. I did not talk to Dan but I was told they were working on it we speak and that an evening session was scheduled for tonight. No time frame for getting it to work. But it does sound like they are trying.

They chose to show the SD 4.3 version on the HD channel. So, I quickly stopped my recording. I did not see any lip sync issues for the couple of seconds that it was on screen.
According to WIS there was a lip sync issue coming from NBC.

Lucky! I've got a 3G 20 gig Ipod and I love it.
Maybe I'll get some luck and hit the powerball or something!
Of course, I could drop cable all together and buy a new Ipod Mini every other month with the savings. LOL
TechMan 10-01-04, 06:28 PM Bob,
WOLO-HD cable/OTA is really screwing up. You got SD video with HD network test stream audio. It is glitching badly in the video, freezing ever few seconds. Please check your baby,it sick!
bdfox18doe 10-01-04, 07:40 PM Techman-
Looking here at home via my VPN, it appears to be fine OTA at this time,
both on 25-1 and 25-2..
I'll have master keep a close eye on it! It has been a bit cantankerous that past two days.
bdfox18doe 10-01-04, 07:58 PM Anyone seeing a problem with WOLO-DT now?
We had the PSIP computer crash, first time in many months. Since we monitor here with a commercial receiver, it ignores PSIP problems thus
giving the impresison the signal was fine. It's things like this where we appreciate those of you out there letting us know something's amiss.
WOLO-HD looking fine via Samsung T-160 via OTA...

kevinivey 10-03-04, 07:12 PM Good job Wach-DT. I think the few glitches were Fox Network related. No dropouts at all, and no lip sync issues.

Takes two to tango and now it would appear WACH can at least approach the dance floor. How long? Who knows but as I recall history has shown anywhere from 3 to 18+ months for local DT carriage on TWCSC.

Very true. TWCSC should have had carriage agreement already in place so that way when WACH started passing HD they would have been ready to pass it on to us... but then again that makes too much sense.

I watched my recording of LAX today and saw the switch over to 4:3 near the end (about 4 something minutes before the end of the recording). Why.. I could only guess. I did not see the freeze problem but perhaps my attention was elsewhere at that particular moment.

Howdy!
Welcome to our little forum. FWIW, Sumter is part of the Columbia DMA and thus included in our posts here. I have also constructed a summary for our area that you might find helpful (see my sig for link or vist this thread's very first post). To answer your specific questions now:
- WB: WBHQ-DT Ch 39 broadcasts a SD only signal from the east part of Sumter (limited area; low power signal probably will not reach Cola as a rule). No word on when/if they will be HD capable. Their NTSC signal however broadcasts from Columbia (NE part; not too far from main antenna farm area). This signal is also available in Cola and Sumter via TWC and OTA (Ch 63).
- UPN: There is supposedly no UPN affiliate now in the Columbia or Sumter area. WBHQ held dual WB/UPN affiliate status up till last month when the UPN side was supposed to go away (I only watched Enterprise occasionally and actually have not checked to verify it went away). Come January there will be a new ANALOG station (WZRB) whose signal will originate out of Columbia. No word yet when they will build out a DT station.
- PBS: Sumter has their very own SCETV/PBS station WRJA-DT Ch 28. They send out the same signal (with three sub-channels) as does Columbia's WRLK (someday it might vary a tad but no word yet if/when that will happen). I live near the speedway here in Sumter and can get WRLK-DT Ch 32 using an outdoor antenna w/o a problem. Using my indoor Radio Shack Double Bowtie however usually does not work. Note that it is about 35 miles to the WRLK tower which is not very tall and uses relatively low power.
tcosson 10-06-04, 02:44 PM Thanks,
I watched Enterprise and was hoping to give Veronica Mars a try. Mostly I watch a lot of WB and was hoping for High Def. I wonder I I can receive anything from the east coast side of Sumter, like Myrtle Beach distance...

Most MB stations are actually Florence stations (or technically Flo/MB) and most of their towers are located near Dillon which is about 70 miles from here. I just checked the FCC and yes Florence's UPN is WWMB and their tower is just south of Dillon so regular reception is very doubtful. You might get the occasional signal via troposphere duction (bounce/skip) if you had a good outdoor antenna with pre-amp but don't count on it.
tcosson 10-06-04, 03:17 PM Oh well,
I'm looking at the directv guide on the web site(not receiver) and I don't see Enterprise listed on it either. I think last season I was watching it on the hybrid sation. Last evening I checked the TWC guide looking at WBHQ at 10pm and no Enterprise. So it appears confirmed; no UPN here for now.

Kir,
You cannot get the DT signal OTA. However you should be able to get the analog station WBHQ Ch 63 OTA where you live. (this is the channel that TWC carries in the Columbia/Orangeburg/Sumter area). WBHQ's analog tower is in NE Cola (but not real close to the others in the Elgin area) and uses 1312 kW ERP.
Their digital station, WBHQ-DT Ch 39, currently has their broadcast tower in east Sumter (city of license). Their temporary licsnse is low power output (.7kw) and small radiation output pattern pattern (http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=DS607507.html) pretty much limits their reception to the immediate Sumter area. Their DT station is a simulcast of their analog signal.
courier72 10-07-04, 11:06 AM Hopefully, when they're able to go to full power they'll reach a carriage agreement with TWCSC. Same for the new UPN affialiate.
bdenman 10-07-04, 11:07 AM Kirs previous question caused me to check the FCC website whereupon I discovered a (new to me) Construction Permit for WBHQ-DT which caused me to telephone their station whereupon I talked to their GM Stefanie Rein and discovered the following:
WBHQ-DT is indeed constructing a new digital broadcast capability in Columbia. They will be using the same tower (http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapgen/gif?lon=-80.764167&lat=34.116111&iwd=750&iht=750&mark=-80.764167,34.116111,bluestar,WBHQ_SUMTER_SC&on=water,miscell,counties,places,CITIES,&off=streets,GRID,shorelin&ht=0.5&wid=0.5) they now use to send out their analog signals (via the FCC web site, the polar plot for their new DT antenna indicates a kidney shaped pattern; relatively wide east to west with more coverage to the south than the north; their expected ERP = 500kW). They expect to be up by June 2005 and expect to be able to pass through HD at that time.
edit: corrected misspelling of Ms. Rein's first name
IrmoGamecoq 10-07-04, 11:15 AM Question on ESPN-HD on TWC:
Do they broadcast football games in DD 5.1?
If so, does TWC pass the 5.1 on via the optical-out on the SA8000HD DVR?
Just curious if tonight's game up in Charlottesville will be in Dolby Surround or not.

No, you must manually select. It is merely a matrix surround sound format. A digital receiver will see it as Dolby Digital 2.0. Most people use Pro logic ,and Pro logic II. Kenwood receivers have a circle surround setting , but again it must be selected first. I simply leave my receiver set for pro logic II by default, and the receiver will switch to Dolby Digital 5.1 automatically when a stream is sensed on a DD 5.1 capable channel.

Almost want to that it looks like someone in the FOX chain has been taking classes on TNT's HD Stretch-o-vision. Maybe our friend Bob can elucidate on whether this was a FOX network thing or just our own local station station testing their equipment's capabilities?
kevinivey 10-07-04, 07:35 PM Well, Since it was on my smaller HD 4.3 screen it didn't look stretched. TNT-HD looks excellent on the 4.3 HD set. (-:
bdenman 10-07-04, 07:47 PM I tried to do an A/B comparison here; Ch 6 on TWC and Ch 57.1 OTA. Difficult to catch the same frame in both images but came close a couple of times and to my eye the Seinfield episode on WACH-DT was stretched to fill the screen. I cannot rule out a little bit of zoom might have been applied as well. And FWIW, I generally will not watch such broadcasts.
kevinivey 10-07-04, 07:54 PM I find it odd that a local can do this, as I have NEVER heard of one with this ability. I hardly watch Wach, Sunday's being the exception.
There is a MLB playoff game at 8:00 tonight ,and it started with colored sidebars for the promo, and went widescreen SD at the start. IT does not appear to be stretched or zoomed. This still doesn't explain what the local was doing, but this is WACH.

Great... another timely negotiated carriage agreement.
Seems like that since they anounced the rollout of those two new channels before this ESPN-HD contract was signed there should have been some provision for carriage of ESPN2-HD and ESPN-U as soon as they went live.
Could someone please explain to me why our local stations have to throw some kind of switch to pass on the HD signal from the networks?
WOLO usually gets it right.
WLTX mostly gets it right.
WIS sometimes gets it right.
They all seem to be able to inject their local station's bug into the digital stream.
Why then, can't they just leave the feed in HD and pass the local SD content (commercials, non-network programming) into the digital stream? The networks obviously can do this!
I don't know anything about commercial television broadcasting, but it seems to me that this day and age, this problem has to be solved by now.
I'm really getting tired of being frustrated by watching an HD show in SD.
Does anyone know why this is such a problem?

I don't think the networks can use this excuse anymore. It's obviously not as mature as analog broadcast, but "new"? For how many more years?
kevinivey 10-08-04, 04:25 PM I do not think they should either, but every email answer includes that tag line in some form. In reality, analog makes money, and HD is a money pit. When the HD ratings count, then you will see increased awareness. I should had posted some of the bizzare email responses that I received from Wis. They are arrogant about HD, and the overall quality of their broadcast. All the locals will multicast ,and we all should enjoy what we have, because it will most likely be going away . A Wltx-Dt duplicate sd digital is not far away. They tried to mulicast last weekend, and they failed.
courier72 10-08-04, 04:48 PM For better or worse, I think some OTA stations won't feel the same commitment to digital transmission until it's near time for their analog transmitter to be powered down. And that's going to likely be a long time coming.

Even then digital - yes, HD - I'm not so sure...
Brent Hutto 10-09-04, 10:45 AM I also believe that the beautiful HD images we've seen from, for example, The Masters are a transient thing. Once the broadcast world is all digital the emphasis will be on how many "content" streams they can cram into their allotted bandwidth. The beautiful pictures that are so appreciated by folks like AVS Forum subscribers will eventually go the way of all flesh, so to speak.
The goal then is to enjoy the present because there is no guarantee of the future. That's what makes it doubly frustrating when a show you want to watch in HD gets broadcast week after week in SD.

I believe their radiation pattern as indicated by the polar plot is intentional and not easily changed. I have been told stations do this to minimize interference with distant station's signals (especialy if on the same channel). There may be other reasons as well. I also understand their pattern is designed into the antenna itself along with stated paramaters like broadcast power and antenna height.
Talkiing to Dan Orta about your particular situation/location might be in order. The phone number for WACH is: (803) 252-5757. Dan's email addy is: dorta@wach.com.
JeffSmall 10-13-04, 08:21 PM Watching "Lost" on channel 815 in HD. The wife stumbled across it this evening. Didn't know if anyone else was getting it. It could be a Myrtle Beach/Lowcountry/Florence thing, but it appears to be the HD feed of WPDE TV-15.
Lost looks great, btw.
bdenman 10-13-04, 09:00 PM Yep; Lost in HD is indeed found on the Cola TWC lineup as well (WOLO-DT for us).

Is it worth watching, Bruce?

I think it is. Who knows or cares how long it'll last, but I can tell ya, the first few episodes have been pretty compelling...tonight was just as good...it's all a taste thing, after all. I'm just happy I've got ABC in HD. The wife is happy to watch that Desperate Housewives in HD, and ABC has some good sporting events. This is the first I've seen of it appearing, and since we're a bit regionalized, I wasn't sure if everyone else got it. Anyway, that's ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS...the only OBVIOUS one that's missing is Fox. I'd love WB in HD because of Smallville, and as far as UPN goes...well...I dunno...
But Fox...oh man oh man would I drool over that one...
Jeff,
not looking a gift horse in the mouth...
IrmoGamecoq 10-14-04, 10:19 AM Yep, "Lost" in HD is highly recommended by me too. Missed the very first episode, but I've been DVRing all the ones since.
I'm hooked, and that's coming from someone that doesn't watch much network serial TV.
bdenman 10-14-04, 10:48 AM Kir,
Yes. So far I have enjoyed "Lost". If one is joining it in mid-stream, I might suggest they find an episode guide on the internet to figure out what has gone on thus far.
Daryl L 10-14-04, 11:27 AM If your interested in ABC's new tv show Lost then this thread Here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=449662&perpage=20&pagenumber=1) is a must read. People are loving this show. :)
IrmoGamecoq 10-14-04, 04:29 PM DarylL - Good link, but set aside some time if you want to get caught up on that thread. I'm on page 27 after scanning some this afternoon, and there's no end in sight.
Daryl L 10-14-04, 05:04 PM HeHeHe :D The threads nearly as good as the show. :)
mb2foruaolcom 10-14-04, 06:32 PM Lost is a great show as there are many unexpected things that a show that would be trying to last a long time rather than be interesting would do. The only way this becomes a long lasting series is it becomes a Gilligans Island LOL. Many of the things are left to your imagination like last night when Locke ran into the "creature" that appears to be several times taller than him by the way he acted before it should have attacked him yet Locke shows up back at camp. As far as what was said about attenna patterns was right that the antenna is built for the station with a particular pattern to be radiated at a certain power and the area of coverage is locked in by FCC application as to prevent distant stations on same frequency from being interfered with even though he FCC uses + and - frequency offsets to try to minmize the interference. Stations have very little ability to change their radiation patternes and power after FCC approval of their application.
IrmoGamecoq 10-15-04, 10:20 AM MB2 - I had to read the second part of your post twice to make sure you weren't still talking about "Lost," what with all the antenna talk and all. :D
chummel 10-19-04, 11:04 PM I have gotten quite hooked on Lost myself. Have we heard any more news about the DVI port activiation?
kevinivey 10-20-04, 08:18 AM Real shame that these two local parties can not agree on a carriage deal. Full bitrate HD being missed on TWCSC for the MLB playoffs, and The World Series possibly.
You can bet things will change when satellite gets enough capacity for HD locals.

I think you're right, but by the time satellite gets enough bandwidth for HD locals even into the Cola/Lex market which is #86 in the country, hopefully TWCSC will have WACH-DT by then....hopefully.
I am saying if that happens it will be because of the satellite threat.

That's a bit of an overstatement - if that were 'the' reason, why would we have launched any local broadcasters to date?
Anyway, to address the question about DVI update.
SA is unable to provide us with an anticipated date when DVI will be active on the 8000 HD. Currently SA is concentrating on some issues related to their new 8300 - it has become a very big problem in some areas that have launched large numbers of these new model DVRs (South Carolina has not). The issues are getting a great deal of press in some large media markets like NYC and LA, so SA is concentrating their forces on correcting these pronounced issues. I'll keep on asking them - every week - just like I have been for months. You will be the first to know - promise

Must be a touchy subject. :) I don't know, maybe to get a jump? There have been several press releases lately about satellite launches and their intentions. It looks like some some healthy competition might spur so things on from my perspective, which is not to say TWC SC would not being doing everything they can otherwise.
DianaTWCSC 10-20-04, 10:04 AM Competition is certainly a factor in everything we do. However, my point was it isn't the only factor - or even the most pressing factor - by any stretch of the imagination, which is what I was referencing when I quoted you.

yes, it is disappointing, especially with such a good playoff series.
is WACH carrying the 5.1 audio?
chummel 10-20-04, 11:27 AM Diana,
Thanks for the update. I know you're looking out for us. Great job as always. Keep on those people at SA. I know the negotiations take time for carriage agreements but does anyone say "We really need to get this done immediately because of the programming we have right now!" ie Baseball , Masters on NBC, etc
Craig
DianaTWCSC 10-20-04, 11:50 AM It is certainly said locally, but in the long run, I don't know how much impact that really has on the lawyers on either side.
kevinivey 10-20-04, 07:38 PM Very disappointed that a timely deal could not had been worked out. Sadly, we are the minority , and analog customers pay more of the bills than we do. However, I can watch the Sportscenter replays in HD!
FWIW: I have enjoyed listening to the playoffs on ESPN Radio via XM. They are wonderful at describing the actions on the field. As far away from what FOX is doing as than they can be!

This is not directed to you kevinivey, as I understand the point you made...
I can guarantee that I/we pay much more that analog customers, its not my/our fault that they(the networks) haven't figured out a way to determine ratings for digital broadcasts.
kevinivey 10-20-04, 10:39 PM Potential HD DVR Guide Problem:
Channel 815 ABCHD Program guide is not updated past Sunday(24th). Also tonight's 8:00 pm broadcast of "Lost" was not picked up by my dvr. I think ABC has made some last minute changes, and the "record only new episodes" guide retrieval is confused. I also had two "record only new episodes" on ABCHD not record this past Sunday but, the third did record successfully. This of course could be only on my dvr, but all other recordings on different channels have been correct. Channel 815 seems to be the only channel my dvr has a problem recording successfully.
scruffy7 10-21-04, 01:44 AM i had the same problems with the 8000HD...sunday night i noticed the record light hadn't come on, same thing tonight--both on 815.
the odd thing is the programs were both listed in the 'scheduled' section of the list to be recorded with the correct date and times but the dvr never recorded them.
kevinivey 10-21-04, 05:44 AM Yep, that is the same issue that I have. I am glad I caught it tonight, though I did miss the first 15 minutes. I will have to check it more closely in regards to recordings of channel 815.

I'll notify our Guide Rep to check on the HD schedule for WOLO this morning. Thanks for the head's up!
(HD or not, I've been glued to Baseball all week and haven't had a chance to check my recordings at all I guess I can get caught up Friday night - Yeah the Evil Empire is defeated!)
Scruffy - you have a SA 8000 HD, correct?
kevinivey 10-21-04, 07:36 AM No FoxHD in the hidden mode?;)
thanks for help, Diana
