scruffy7 09-29-06, 10:26 AM scruffy7,
What PC program are you using to capture the video.
i use a Macintosh, but there is a nice little OS X app named iRecord that works well. i'd imagine that there are similar programs for the Windows/Linux folks out there.
i should add that sometime after unplugging the firewire the 8300 would almost always crash. i haven't tried it since the upgrade to see if that's gone away.

Diana,
Is there anyway to rollback this update? And please tell me the "patch" I asked you for was not this firmware.

i still think it's a worthwhile upgrade to get rid of the kick to live and get a play from beginning option, maybe my enthusiasm would be tempered if i were experiencing the HDMI issues too...

Nope, read about it in the AVS Recording HD Area. This version seems to be unique to twc, and I am not blaming TWC. SA seems to be more at fault. I am actually am very happy with the firmware change, because it actually makes the dvr a true time shifting dvr that it has never been.
Yes
I've been able to "fix" one of my displays by using my AV receiver. The other two...issues, issues, issues.
I guess I'll go purchase some component cables to keep my sanity.

SA Box seems updated because I have the 4X now, so that is good.
ESPN-HD - broadcast of the Thursday night game had a fair amount of mosquito noise, as ESPN-HD usually does, particularly in long shots, but otherwise very good. Motion does not degrade the picture at all.
WLTX-HD - I tried to watch Alabama-Florida yesterday, and it was as horrible as it was during much of the basketball season. Low detail, HORRIBLE BLOCKING, and generally terrible overly compressed picture. There is no way on earth it is looking this bad from the network. (And before everyone here tells me again I'm nuts, I'm looking at this on a high end DLP projector and an 8 foot wide screen). Bottom line CBS HD sports are unwatchable on WLTX-HD. I did not try OTA but last time I did it was equally crappy OTA. Now, if everyone just stood still it is pretty good, but any motion of camera or players and the picture blurs into serious blocking.
ABC-HD - Watched some of the game last night and it looked very good. Very similar to ESPN without the mosquito noise. No blocking artifacts, no mosquito noise.. gj ABC folks !!
-- Cain
LexHiDef 10-01-06, 10:02 AM I agree....pro and college football on WLTX-HD is HORRIBLE!!!
The picture on WOLO-HD often looks soft to me but there is less of the "macro-blocking" or "pixelization" than you see on CBS.
I don't know where the blame lies, but someone should hear from us about the poor CBS broadcasts.
topher57 10-01-06, 12:04 PM Do not feel alone and blame WLTX, I am in Florence and tried to watch the Alabama-Florida game on WBTW 13 and I had pretty much the same experience Cain had, and it was so pitiful I finally just started watching Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech although I am an SEC fan, CBS was just pitiful. Anyway Don't blame WLTX or TWC because I tried watching via antenna and it was still the same on both WLTX and WBTW.

Thx for the feedback.
All I know is the football game yesterday was unwatchable for me via TCW and WLTX. In the past when it was this bad and we could convince them to temporarily switch off all the sub-channels it got really good again.
I usually agree about the ABC HD games, but last night it was VERY good.

The only time that I remember them doing this was when CBS had the Super Bowl.
It would be better if they would tuned them off,but realistically that not really a option. What is new this year is their full time Weather Now channel. They might as well broadcast in 720p like they did for the NCAA basketbal Touney.

Agreed!! Not only are we getting shafted on the ESPN2HD but we should also have ESPNU. I have already missed 2 Clemson games this year and atleast one more in two weeks against Temple.
The lack of ability by TWCSC to get the deal done for these channels is absolute horses*&t.
GreystoneSC 10-01-06, 09:50 PM We can keep dreaming Cain. I know I'd love to see it in HD this Saturday.
As for the HDMI issues, I wish I could chime in, but I haven't been able to use HDMI since I discovered it was the cause of my top-line flicker/vibration problem - and I've yet to find a post explaining how to adjust the underscan. I sure wish I could use the $100 cable for all channels, and not just 1/2 of them.
My 8300 will reboot on its own. I have posted this before but am wondering if anyone else is having the same problems or found a solution. Sometimes it will reboot just for the hell of it in the middle of a show. Tonight it rebooted when I went to turn it off. I gave upon the football game and decided to go to bed. I was recording a show and when I turned off the TV/box it rebooted so I now have missed about 5 minutes of the show I was recording.
We have swapped out several boxes, we have had several tech people out here and they find nothing. The only clue I seem to have is that you have to turn the sound up louder and louder -- that tells me it is getting ready to reboot.
TW told me I could not have a splitter to a VCR that was causing the problem. I tried that, took the splitter out for a couple of months, did not matter. So I put the splitter back in. I will need the VCR this week since my TIGERS made the playoffs!
I also can make the box reboot if I try and use the A button for the interactive stuff. I showed that to a TW tech and he said "huh".
It is getting very frustrating -- any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
GreystoneSC 10-01-06, 11:30 PM Are you using HDMI? I had minor re-boot issues when I was, nothing like you are describing, but since the switch to component I've had zero.

High-definition ESPN2 on way

Answering Your Questions
• Can you tell me when Time Warner Cable in Columbia will add ESPN2 in high definition?
Officials with the cable company said earlier this month they expect to begin offering ESPN2 HD within 30 to 60 days. That means local sports fans could be enjoying more of their favorite sports programming in greater clarity by the middle of October.
The channel likely would be a part of Time Warner’s high definition tier and customers who already subscribe to that package would not have to pay an additional fee. The tier, which includes ESPN and several other channels, is $6.95 a month.
Cable officials also said they are getting close on a deal to offer ESPNU. The network will have an extensive college football schedule this season. Among those already announced are Florida Atlantic at Clemson on Sept. 2, Furman at North Carolina on Sept. 16 and Temple vs. Clemson in Charlotte on Oct. 12.

Don't ask the local TWC- they don't know anything. Email Fred Dressler (Corp VP of Programming for TWC) and ask him. He's the one who negotiates the contracts.

Greetings,
Since the update, I have mysteriously lost three recordings on my SA8300HD. I have plenty of drive space (I have an external drive attached, and the space indicator shows I'm only using 12%). I have checked the settings, and all three shows were set to save ALL RECORDINGS.
All 3 shows have the following in common (1) They were in HD, (2) They were recorded at the same time as another HD show using Dual Tuner, and (3) We watched the OTHER show recorded in the same time slot and then deleted it.
For example, we recorded ER and SHARK at 10 pm on 9/28. We watched ER, then deleted it. Later, when I went to my list to watch Shark, it was gone.
Same for Firefly and Desperate Housewives on 9/24.
We watched DH last night, and after the delete, Firefly was gone.
This is a working theory. I realized late last night that we were having a problem, so I didn't have time to reproduce it by setting up a Dual Tuner HD record, and then delete one of the files.
I am the only one that uses the TW box -- my wife and kids aren't familiar with it yet.
Anyone else notice anything funny going on?
David
GreystoneSC 10-02-06, 09:20 AM Cain - Diana has addressed that article. Her sources, presumably the guy himself, say that they were misquoted, however the paper has apparently claimed that they have a seperate source who confirmed it. I'd want to be sure that any issues with connecting the STB to an HDMI repeater are put to bed. Compliance with the current rev. of HDMI would be a big plus as well. I''m not sure to which portions of HDMI are implemented in software, and what's hardware specific with the 8300HD.

So Mystro is nothing more than a GUI that sits on top of the SARA firmware or does it completely replace SARA? If it is the latter then it has to have code for the outputs on the SA8300. And if it does have code for the outputs, then someone needs to take a look at the HDCP implementation. The new SARA 1.88 is too restrictive on the HDMI port.

mikepaul 10-03-06, 04:55 PM "An NFL Network spokesman jokingly said, 'Maybe Mr. Dressler can bring his failed sports tiers into retirement with him.'"Joke is right. If the tiers had actually failed, I'd probably be paying for MORE stuff I don't watch because my lack of desire for them won't prevent TWC from charging extra if they show up as generally-available channels due to public demand. Now, maybe I could learn something from the Spanish tier, but that's nothing I need either. Lucky for me, community pressure hasn't forced that tier into the general channel pool while bumping up the cost for everybody. Same for NFL Network's demand for bucks from every subscriber for the 'privilege' of watching it. The rare Bills game, even a HD one, isn't going to help justify the cost a lot.
This is why a-la-carte sounds so good, until it turns out channels I want go under when all subscribers aren't forced to pay for them, and my bill goes up to keep the rest in business. All I can hope for is that the NFL Network goes first...
kevinivey 10-03-06, 07:14 PM You mean based on the download last week? not that I know of at this time.
Yes ,I have a hdmi switchable AV receiver that I use to switch video and the lastest download has killed its ability to display video when first turned on. I have to switch to a different channel that is not in the same resolution as what was first displayed(in this case white screen). The main problem is when both tuners are recording. I have NO ability to view any video. Component analog hookups are not a option. HDMI is my only video hookup from the SA 8300HD.
Do you turn on the receiver before the 8300?
kevinivey 10-03-06, 09:37 PM Do you turn on the receiver before the 8300?
does not seem to matter.
I ask because HDMI by design lets things downstream of a device affect things before it. For example, a TV set can tell the audio processor before it that it only has two speakers, so the audio processor will send only 2 channels. Done correctly, this can really help people get the setups right without fooling around with too many things.
I saw on TV last week an advertisement for a football game to be played on ESPN2HD this week. It was a quick glimpse but I know what I saw since I said to myself, "finally it is here". My SA3250HD lost sound tonight then immediately stopped changing channels, then would not shut off with either remote or on the STB. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, and the display had this jumbled message, kind of like a number 8 split in the middle, then it said reboot, and shut off. That's all I get now. I'm using the DVI-HDMI cable and it has been good for a month now. Any ideas?

Anybody had any problems recording with their 8300HD? I'm back to only getting partial shows. ER from ch. 805 only recorded 23 minutes of the season premier. Frustrating to say the least. This was a very common problem a while back, but I thought it was solved?

No it doesn't. You can blame the piss poor PQ on the local ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliates.
I have had no problems with 8000HD or 8300HD recording any program. I think the ER premiere was Sept 22, hard to know what could have happened. Sorry, but I did not watch or record it.
I seem to have a similar problem as kevinivey. I have an 8300 and every time I've turned on the tv the past 4 days, I get a snowy screen. I have to repeatedly tap my HDMI switcher for a picture to appear. The audio is fine, and on other video sources the picture is there, so this is obviously an HDMI issue. If I hadn't seen his post regarding this, I wouldn't hesitate getting my 5th "new" 8300 box, but I'm assuming others are having this issue as well. What is the solution to this? Thanks in advance.
kevinivey 10-05-06, 05:30 PM 1.88 has HDMI issues ,and I do know if there is a solution in the works. Seems most of the people that are having problems are ones that use AV recievers for switching, and in your case a HDMI switcher.

A lot depends on what your monitor is and how you have your display set. CBS and NBC are 1080i native and they are both limited by their multiple suchannels.
If I return my plasma to its Factory settings then almost every channel has some type of artifacts. A easy way to test is to turn everything back 50% and do not use any of the monitors enhancement features. I also use "Cinema" mode which smooths out a lot of the artifacts. You may already know all this ,but I thought maybe this was a better answer than blaming the "piss poor locals" ;)

Have not had any problems lately, but this has happned in the past. I ahve also had it split a single show into 2 parts. I ahve 2 8300HD boxes and haven't had any recording issues of late.
msturkie 10-05-06, 09:15 PM Add me to the list of those with HDMI problems that started last week. My HDMI cable goes straight to the TV, although I do have audio going through a receiver. Everytime the box is turned on there is no output from HDMI. I have to switch to S-video, and "activate" the HDMI port by switching resolutions from 1080i to 720p, then going back to the HDMI input. This does the trick, but is maddeningly frustrating. Especially when I have to explain how to fix it to my wife. Thankfully she gets it easy enough. I know the engineers know about the problem, so here's to hoping they get a fix for this in soon.

Hey, all I said was I saw the commercial! All I read about is you guys crying for ESPN2HD, and since seeing the commercial showing a game coming up in ESPN2HD gives me hope, I post it. Get off my back with the sarcasm.
To the other guy asking where I saw it, I live in Lexington.

The sarcasm was more stunned amazement that anyone could conclude after seeing a promo of a game on ESPN2HD-- that TWC is adding it to their pathetic line-up.
I called TW today about another issue and asked about ESPN2HD, ESPNU and NFLN. I got the usual response about the E's -- we are working on it --. But the NFLN was a new TW lie and he told me it was the truth, said why would he lie to me a valued TW customer! His lie -- NFLN has a ten year contract with some unknown corporate something that has two more years to run and then TW will be able to have NFLN -- at least now we know. Oh wait I think that is the sound of pigs flying over my house
I swear the above is true, I am not making it up!
They are piss poor. How many HDTV owners actually watch the subchannels?
I call them piss poor becauses of the worthless subchannel implementations.
kevinivey 10-06-06, 04:44 PM They could have chosen not to even broadcast in HD. There are still two locals they have chosen not to do HD.

What two locals? I only know of the local CW channel. They can't even get SD right, so no worrys.
My motto is do it right or don't do it at all.
DianaTWCSC 10-06-06, 06:30 PM He is confusing it with Direct TV's NFL Sunday Ticket.
yes - CSSR was confusing NFL Network with NFL Sunday Ticket - answer for Sunday Ticket was correct.

Hmmm...the opening page of the website says, "Click here to learn the facts on this issue."
The first bullet-point "fact" says, "The NFL Network is demanding to be paid $137 million for 8 games."
Makes me wonder....is that $137 million just to broadcast those 8 games and then all of the other good stuff broadcast over the NFL Network is available for an additional charge or is that the cost for the network with all of it's offseason, and in-season, "non-game" content AND those 8 games?
Another "fact" says, "The NFL Network is not one of the top 25 cable networks, according to independent cable ratings systems."
Well, duh....the network has been around less than 3 years for one thing. How many other top 25 cable networks have been around less than 3 years? And what is that measurement based on? Revenue, subscribers, what?
Secondly, TW won't put them on their cable system and TW is the second largest cable company, therefore, how easy will it be for the NFL Network to crack the top 25 if they are shut out of all TW controlled outlets?
Those may be "facts", but are they the whole story?
kevinivey 10-06-06, 07:49 PM TWC wants to put the channel in a sports tier and pay according to who subscribes. Seems like a good deal to me.
LexHiDef 10-06-06, 09:15 PM From www.timewarnergetreal.com here it is:
"The NFL Network would indeed let Time Warner Cable include its channel in a Sports Package, at a cost of less than $3.00 per month. That cost would be less than a dollar a month if Time Warner Cable would include the NFL Network in its standard package, as it does other less popular networks."
Is there a difference in a sports tier and a sports package?
Bottom line TW in now charging us sports junkies $6.95 a month for ESPNHD. OK they throw in a few other channels that show endless repeats in HD and once in a while a sports program but for most all of us that have that tier we are paying $6.95 for ESPNHD. I for one would not buy those other channels that come with ESPNHD.
But I would pay that much a month for ESPN2HD or EPSNU or NFLN because that is what I would like to spend my money for not what TWC thinks is good for me.
kevinivey 10-07-06, 08:07 AM If we are be honest about vaule. I currently find ESPNHD to be little better than DVD quality. The only truly impressive HD sports are shown on the few other channels on the HD tier. ESPNHD is the last HD channel that I would show anyone interested in buy a HD set for the first time.
As for ESPNU it's not even a HD channel, and looks like a smeared mess.
bdfox18doe 10-07-06, 08:42 AM I currently find ESPNHD to be little better than DVD quality. .
I find ESPNHD to be stunning. But I'm not watching it via TWC or LSD either.. :)

DianaTWCSC 10-07-06, 05:50 PM Hi guys - I have some news.
I have accepted a promotion to our Corporate office in Stamford, CT. I will be the Director of Product Development for Video. I start up there Nov 1.
Over the next 3 weeks I'll be finishing up things here - as I begin to learn about my new job responsibilities... which include Mystro Digital Navigator, SDV, Digital Simulcast, HD (but not specific programming deals), video packaging and other cross-functional initiatives like Caller ID on TV.
Over the years I have discovered you are a very valuable source of information and I believe if the company wants to succeed we need to listen to what you want. As such, I have started a new thread. I hope you will be so kind as to share your opinions with me here

GreystoneSC 10-08-06, 03:30 PM Dern Diana, I should have asked the following question before you left... Anyone who knows please chime in:
Why is it that only some of my movies on HBO and Movies on Demand are sent in DD5.1 - especially those like Mr. and Mrs. Smith which I know were encoded in 5.1? If the movie is on HBOHD, it generally will be in 5.1, or if it is on 200. But if its on the middle HBO's, almost always stuck with Dolby PL. Same goes for Movies on Demand - wife just ordered "Rumor has It" -- No 5.1. Others have had it, but its about 50% of the time.
I use to run optical but had to switch temporarily to coaxial - but that shouldn't have any effect right? If I get some things in 5.1, it would seem that the connection is fine right?

Fios internet is already available in certain parts of NMB and should be on in a larger area soon. I'm actually not sure if they are putting it down in Myrtle beach at this time, if they are I haven't heard.
I did ask some Verizon guys I happen to see walking around with a map and were checking the area where I have a home there, how it was going. They said the internet should be on in about a month where I am, but they couldn't tell me when they would add video.
I'm not sure how that change in the law will affect them with putting the video in, verses just dealing with the city. I know the city of NMB wouldn't give them any problem.

Try the Sunset Blvd. location in W. Columbia. That's where I got mine. You might try calling TWCSC and see if they have the 8300 in stock before you go. I don't think you can actually "reserve" one but they can probably tell you if they have them in stock.
dday515 10-18-06, 08:17 AM Anyone else had similiar problems with their HD8300?
1) There are a number of shows that I've set to record all first run episodes. On weeks that there are no first run episodes, the shows still show up in scheduled recordings, even though they're not on at the time they are listed.
2) Last night, the DVR was convinced that I Was recording something on ABC and something on E!. The E! show was not recording and did not show up in my recorded list. However, I DID want to record something on a 3rd channel. When I tried to manually record the item on the 3rd (which showed up in my scheduled recordings), I receievd a message that E! was currently being recorded. The gotcha? I couldn't stop the recording on E!. AT all.
These things have to be my biggest complaint about TWC so far. Coming from DirectTV with Tivo, I never had to worry if my DVR was actually going to record what it was supposed to. $15 seems like an awful lot to spend on a DVR that may or may not record what you tell it to.

Thanks,
As soon as I finished writing this, I went and rebooted. I knew it couldn't really hurt!
This raises an interesting point (to me, at least) which has been echoed in your thread regarding video changes - is there any way to alert users of these sorts of things? Had I known that there were going to be issues, I could have rebooted yesterday afternoon and successfully recorded my Tuesday shows.
I completely understand that its a hard call to make, because I'd assume that for every user like those of us in this forum, there are 10 users who just use their boxes and are obvliovious to the behind the scenes ideas behind it. Such information would confuse and frustrate them. But as what I'd refer to as a "power user," it seems a shame to be frustrated about something that a little bit of communication could have solved.

kevinivey 10-19-06, 06:25 AM What I am telling you is, if you have a 720P signal that has sufficient bandwidth and a 1080i signal that has sufficient bandwidth, you would be hard pressed to see the difference in the picture.
Sure you can see imperfections in the NCAA tournament....(if you back off of the set a few feet you cannot see them).... We are running three channels in 19Mb of bandwidth. However, had I not switched to 720P, the picture would have looked a lot worse since the bitrate that I am currently using for 720P would be trying to do 1080i.
I am not arguing with anyone about anything. I just want people to realize you can complain all day long about multicasting, but it is here to stay. I don't particularly like it either but it is a reality of our business. As technology evolves, we will be able to run three channels and not degrade the HD. Newer encoders can already run HD 1080i in as little as 12-14Mb with NO pixelation at all.
Remember that we are on the beginning of this technology and there will be some growing pains.
That is the end of this discussion for me. Enjoy the NCAA tournament or not, It's up to you. It is what it is.
A little ditty from the past... Dan is or was the chief engineer. I am amazed how WIS-DT HD games look worlds better than WLTX and WIS appears to run larger subchannels. Better equipment perhaps?

Had the same issue here on with WBTV on Tuesday during NCIS and the following show.. so may be a CBS issue.

I'm traveling in the morning to see the family for a couple of days - if you have an issue, please call 866-892-7201. I hope to be back on line later on Sunday.
Gary J - if you see this, thanks so much for calling me back. We did get it covered, but I appreciate you willingness to assist.
Anyone else had similiar problems with their HD8300?
Greetings, I had the same exact problem last night. I haven't rebooted yet. Fortunately, I had one of my Tivo's recording my shows last night because I no longer trust the 8300.

That reboot during the Colbert Report would be a Republican plot to keep you from watching the truth. That is not the fault of TWC.

Did not notice that. But it's pretty hard NOT to notice CBS/WLTX-HD....it's AWFUL.

ABC and ESPN have been fine.
CBS (as usual) has been unwatchable.

I found out that if I reset the 8300(just unplugged it) the pixellization went away.

Well, it "IS" basically a computer.. :)
DianaTWCSC 10-23-06, 04:47 AM kjpjr - yes, you shouldn't have to, but it is a very good way to keep your memory cleaned out so that the unit responds much better.
formulaben - simply unplug - BUT don't turn unit or TV back on until time comes back up - could take up to 10 minutes. If you turn on prior to clock you could cut off flow of necessary information and end up with 'other' anomalies that wouldn't provide optimal viewing.
Bob - absolutely - and a wonderful little computer at that - this is why I refuse to use the 'b' word in my communications. I also tend to correct Engineers and Techs in mid-conversation so that I have gotten many, of my locals out of the negative connotation habit. It is an uphill battle though.

Coop1979 10-23-06, 04:51 PM After a reboot yesterday I'm still having tons of problems with my 8300 unit. The macroblocking is horrible on all HD channels (not sure about non-HD channels, HD is all I watch), and last night the audio started to really mess up while watching HBO-HD and The Island. I flipped the channel and then flipped it back, and all was fine with the audio. The video continued to have lots of problems, though.
It's basically starting to look like CBS football on every channel, all the time.
Any ideas?

I tear that off and hold it until the payday before it's due, and I've had to write the due date on it since the change.
Thanks...
Switch to auto bank draft and save those 10 seconds.
GreystoneSC 10-24-06, 02:57 AM Gary I tried auto bank draft before. I wound up with a bunch of late fees because of some "glitch" where my bill wasn't paid. Never had that problem with the old system, but to say the least, I don't trust this one.
Greetings,
I was double checking my scheduled recordings for this week, and noticed that "Shark" and "ER" were scheduled for Saturday at 10. Problem is, they both are on Thursday at 10. I've double checked TitanTV, and Tivo Listings. I've rebooted the box. What's going on? Does TWC get the guide data from Tribune, Like Tivo?
Thanks,

TWC:
Could someone please educate your CSRs about how the digital cable works?
I just spend 20 minutes on the phone with one because I am getting hardly any signal and have lost all my digital channels.
I told her that I'm only get the analog channels (2-13). She insisted that since I have a digital box, that all channels are digital. She didn't know anything about SDV. I tried to tell her how it works but she acted like I didn't know what I was talking about.
This leads to a very frustrating conversation with the CSR.
Additionally, the first thing they tell you to do is to unplug the box, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. It sounds simple, but they don't realize that many of our installations have the box in a cabinet with a dozen other wires back there and it is very difficult to reach back there to unplug and even harder to plug it back in blindly.
Couldn't we accomplish the same thing by using the three finger solute (VOL- VOL+ INFO) to reboot the box?

I can't tell you the technical reason why - I just know that you run a very, very, very large risk of not allowing all information to download with the reboot if the TV is on. Then you have rebooted for nothing and still have a mis-functioning unit.

i'm not sure that's EST change related, i've been seeing that kind of wonky behavior for a few weeks now, maybe since the DVR upgrade. it always seems to correct itself before the actual date though. right now my Monday and Tuesday programs are scheduled correctly but there doesn't seem to be any pattern for when they shift days in the Scheduled list and then get corrected. if i'm not mistaken somebody else mentioned seeing this in one of the threads recently.

That was me. It does seem to correct itself prior to the actual day. Its almost like anything oyu have scheduled for "all episodes" appear at some point in the future, even if the show doesn't exist in the guide. Its messy and clunky, but seems to work okay.

Count me as another who's been seeing the weird behavior in the Scheduled Recordings list, with programs several days out (maybe 5 or more) being pushed out 2 days further. I.e., a show that should be on Wednesday says it is on Friday. But it seems to be OK once the show is only 3-4 days out. This seems to be since the firmware update... never saw that happen before. Reboots seem to help only temporarily.

Anyone else getting a fair amount of audio/video hiccups on HD today and the past few days? (Esp. during Gameday)?
Yup. I've been having digital distortion issues with CBS HD and ABC HD, as well as HBO2 HD, for the last several days (even though the other HBO HD channel works fine, go figure). I was wondering if anyone else was having the same issues. As for myself, I live downtown near The Vista and was wondering if it's just a local problem or if a larger area was seeing this disruption. Does anyone see any problems with OTA broadcasts? The disruptions in HD service coincided with a multiple day loss of service with Road Runner, so I'm guessing it might just be some local problem.
kevinivey 10-28-06, 02:41 PM Anyone else getting a fair amount of audio/video hiccups on HD today and the past few days? (Esp. during Gameday)?
nope, nothing of any sorts.
We need some kind of petition or something to send to WLTX about their PQ on the football games, its terrible, not even watchable really. Saturday's Ole Miss-Alabama game was horrible, i just had to finally end up watching on channel 9. The HD was macroblocking so bad during any motion it wasnt worth watching. Turn off the subchannels, they're garbage anyways!!
Agreed ..
kevinivey 10-29-06, 01:09 PM Most likely Wltx-DT(CBS) HD broadcast will worsen when they add a digital duplicate of their analog channel in the future. 720p is the best alternative to all these local stations multicasting. Wach-DT(Fox) in my opinon is the absolute best local HD passage. Today is a good example of the difference. The audio and video quality on Today's Falcons game is outstanding on my 3 HD monitors.

On Saturday most of the problems I experienced were audio, except for the usual terrible picture on WLTX-HD.
On Sunday, there were a lot of hiccups on WLTX-HD and a few on WACH-HD.

Yes WACH's broadcast of football today was infinitely better than WLTX's. WLTX should be sued for false advertising on the premise that games on their channel are in HD.
ncxcstud 10-29-06, 11:45 PM Funny, I thought Fox's broadcast was terrible compared to CBS'.
I'll take minimal blocking over a blurry picture any day.
But again, for me anyways, NBC had the best PQ of the 3 stations.
GreystoneSC 10-29-06, 11:48 PM My sound seems a little better today, but the last few days, most channels (including HBO HD as mentioned above) have been showing digital interference as well as audio hangs or slurs or whatever you want to call it when a word that should be quick gets a nice buzz in the middle.

Amazing that NYC TWC has 3 new National HD channels while we, the ones with the totally wasted SDV system, are left looking at the same ol' thing.

Competition
a competition between two local cable companies would be considered small compared to competition between several mega-giants. As a result, the consequences of the competition would also vary- the larger the competition, the larger the effect.

I think it did it through the TV as well as the sound system, but to answer your question I currently have component video and rca audio feeding the TV and a coaxial digital input feeding a HK AVR335. I didn't try HDMI, but have little reason to believe it would have helped. FWIW, I haven't noticed it since this past weekend.

Greystone, I don't know if this applies to you, but I figured out that my problem was that I had too much splitting going on. Prior to a fairly major repair to some local wiring to get our local RoadRunner working, I hadn't been experiencing any problems with my previous setup. After the repair, HD signals no longer worked properly. After I removed a couple of connections and got some better splitters, it cleared the problem up.
GreystoneSC 11-01-06, 06:52 PM I had that problem before - a signal of -9 dB. I've since changed out the house splitter with one that amps the signal and I have a signal level of +7dB now at the TV, so I don't think that is/was the cause. At least not this time...

Yes, they installed it. The glitches are back bad tonight on the WVU v LOU game.
--- Double checked it... the FDC is +6, and the Tuner1 that comes on when on digital stations or HD reads either +7 or +8 depending on channel.
GreystoneSC 11-02-06, 11:12 PM my thought is that it is the "new" box they gave me to replace my old one to fix the HDMI problem. Not only did it not fix the HDMI problem, its hardly new, as it looked much worse than my original with scratches etc... What do you think?

I had a similar problem for about two weeks. During the day - fine - after dark about 7:30 things started going sour. By 9PM all digital channels we unwatchable.
I finally got a tech out here and he said the signal levels in the neighborhood were too high and the cold weather lately has exasterbated the problem.
To make things worse, TWC had previously installed an amplifier in my house, which boosted a high level even higher.
They got rid of the amp, replaced my line to my house and rebalanced the neighborhood and now all is fine. I even got a 50% credit for the two weeks I was having trouble!
My only complaint is that it took three phone calls and two weeks to fix.
LexHiDef 11-03-06, 12:22 PM Looks like the bitrate for the two subs has been reduced. This may help the HD games this weekend.
Kevin, thanks for information. I'll be an interested observer. Just curious....how did you find this out?
kevinivey 11-03-06, 05:44 PM Both subs video now have a smeared look to them. Before they increased the bandwidth to the subs they used to look like they do now.
It's just a guess, but there is a difference.
GreystoneSC 11-03-06, 06:28 PM I called them last night and left a message... they didn't return, so I finally got a chance to call again - signal level looks good, blah blah, can't come until next saturday between 8 am and 8 pm.... :-/
I took the box out of the picture and used the TV's QAM tuner - same result.
I introduced a splitter to take the signal down 3.5dB to around 5 or so. Still same result.
Went into the structured wiring panel and took out the amp and all other drops - just connected the service line to this one drop via a -3.5dB splitter. Same result.
I'd really like to watch football without this...any other ideas?

GOOOO INDIANS! Is it sad that I'll be taping the Newberry-PC game this Saturday while i'm there?
And, since it's airing on two of the three PBS channels (SCETV and the PBS SD feed...) which would be the better one to tape? Would there be any PQ difference between the two? Normally the PBS SD feeds are of better quality than the SCETV stuff...but, I think that's just because it's normally just a mirrored telecast of whatever is on PBSHD...

Anybody else have that ?? In fact much of the weekend many of the higher digital channels were bad, not just HD ones. First off, glad I found this thread since I'm here in Irmo. I dvr'd the game and watched it yesterday. Had audio dropouts, but I think this was the actual broadcast and not TWC??? Also, i read here about the oversaturated signal and cold weather. I expected to see the results of that on the Saturday night recording but was pleasantly surprised to NOT see it. This has been a major problem at my house for several years. Most techs don't seem to have a clue and, of course, when they got here the temperature was warmer and everything looked good. Go figure. Yep, I have the same thing. Sounds like it may be a local problem for me.
HD Signals, and the higher digitals, channel 150 was unwatchable.
Does anyone know why TWC does not offer ESPN2 in HD as one of their cable channels?
You Betcha. Because they don't have contract.

They do not want to pay for it. TWC is the only major cable company not to carry ESPN2HD, and they were also the last to add ESPNHD.
